New dev log for Redemption's Guild Online about their combat system. I've been keeping my eye on this one for a while because it's essentially a VR 1st person Diablo with 4-player co-op but they've been quiet for a while so nice to see it's still coming. Still looks rough, but it's made a lot of progress.

I think the 'Visual Novel' style of game has a lot of potential in VR. I'm not personally at all interested in Japanese schools, but hopefully some successful takes on narrative focussed games in VR can pave the way for some more diverse settings.

I would agree, except I feel like it would need to be voice acted. Reading that amount of text in VR doesn't sound appealing to me.

It's generally fake 3D. Now it's the best looking fake 3D I've seen, but it's still fake. And if you compare Pinball FX VR to Pinball Arcade, you'll see there's a massive difference in how similar games look.

I've used Tridef 3D Ignition for years, and assuming you're using the right setting, it's absolutely not "fake" 3D. The scene literally gets rendered from two different angles. Games like Mirror's Edge look breathtaking, and in platformers it becomes much easier to judge depth.

I've never tried their VR products, but I can't imagine they would make the 3D worse.

I've never tried their VR products, but I can't imagine they would make the 3D worse.

If you're using the Power 3D setting, it's what the stereoscopic world calls fake 3D. You have the option of switching to true stereoscopic rendering, but everything I tried made no difference. True isn't supported for everything.

Having said that, I used to be a big 3D Vision user and posted occasionally on the 3D Vision Nvidia forums. When I first started looking at TridefVR I went back there and wanted to see what the prevailing attitude was. It was generally a low opinion, but there was occasional reference to a superior method.

So I finally did a google search of "Reshade + fake 3D" and came upon what they were talking about (it's reshade + Depth 3D). Even the Nvidia 3D Vision forum really loves this. It's free, uses the same technique as Nvidia's single-pass 3D compatability mode (although it also works on AMD cards), and doesn't require any additional programs. You have to create a game link to reshade and toss the Depth 3D file into your exe folder, but that's it. After that it just runs normally in Big Screen (or whatever you use for this type of thing).

On a technical level, it's, in theory, superior to "Power 3D". The biggest issue is it's hardcore to setup. I still haven't quite figured that all out. I still don't even understand what all the settings are and it's really difficult to experiment because the setup menu only appears on the monitor, so it's incredibly difficult to even see what a setting alters in the HMD. I'm really hoping there are some hotkeys I'm missing. Because it would be the bee's knee if you could just process through everything, in the HMD, without a OSD blocking everything. It's an incredible tool, but you're left completely on your own to create settings that work with any specific game.

I've got a bunch of bookmarks (and huge threads to sort through). If I can ever simplify how to intelligently and quickly create game specific settings, I was thinking of creating a thread about it.

^^That was a great talk. I just watched the whole thing and yeah, just give me all the nits. Hook us up with that real time ray tracing as a baseline standard for next gen VR games as well please lol.
Not sure if we can answer this yet but do we know the long term effects of having a very bright panel that close to your eyes for an extensive amount of time btw?
Even a very bright panel would still be less light output than a sunny day, so I don't think it's a big issue.

Some screenshots of Visual Novel VR for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. They are currently on Patreon

I've been backing this for exactly a year now. Their progress is steady, and the character customization tech is really nice.

How do you make a 6DOF controller hockey game work on a Go/Gear/Daydream? Unless they are making a different version for those platforms
I imagine it'll work like Wii Sports Resort, where they anchor the sword/frisbee/paddle to a reasonably logical point in 3D space.

Let's see if they nail 6DOF controls first. My guess is no. This trailer shows one of the most pathetic shots on goal I've ever seen. When will developers learn that first impressions are everything?

Literally watched the ending three times to try and reconcile what was so weird about it. On the third play through, it finally dawned on me that the goalie didn't move/animate at all. Was just pasted in place while the puck went through him. Maybe there's a place for it on mobile, I don't know.

Just got done playing some of it yeah. I can't recommend it enough if you want to play something like Star Wars in VR.

Blocking and even stopping laser shots Kylo Ren style with one hand while grabbing a guy and throwing him through a plate glass window with the other feels amazing.

https://uploadvr.com/must-skyrim-vr-pc-mods-make-tamriel-even-better/

I installed a good majority of these and they made my Skyrim VR experience VASTLY better. Good luck!

Can't say that list is great (for VR). Too many mods that are not performance friendly or have better alternatives (which in some cases are also performance friendly).

Flora overhaul will hit your GPU/CPU hard. Can be fine if you have a strong enough system but something like HQ tree bark with its lush option would look nice with less performance hit as the tree models are still vanilla with the exception of additional branches and leaves and it does not touch grass.

SMIM is not a bad suggestion but it should be noted if you have performance issues you should opt for the lite version in the installer.

WICO should never be suggested unless they also explain how to fix its bugs. See this for where to start https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/5049

Realistic water two is great but the LOD fix they link isn't needed. RW2 was updated to fix the LOD issue after that was released. As long as RW2 is close to last in your load order LOD should be fine. Water LOD will look flat compared to vanilla water but thats due to the game not having water reflections. You'll see the same flat look in normal skyrim at really far distances where you wont see the reflections.

Vivid weathers is a nice mod but its less performance friendly then some other really good weather mods for a variety of reasons such as including higher quality but less performance friendly assets. Obsidian Weathers for example is much more light weight and still looks fantastic and IMO better then Vivid weathers anyway (Vivid is still nice though).

JK's Skyrim. Another great mod but it adds A LOT of objects to all towns. On its own its probably fine but if your installing this, new textures, higher poly models, etc. it will push your game over the edge when it comes to performance.

Skyrim 2017 textures I wanted to address last as there is no real issue I just think there are much better alternatives. For example Skyrim Realistic Overhaul (http://www.moddb.com/mods/skyrim-realistic-overhaul) ooks fantastic while not straying from the vanilla games style and cover more texture thenm any other mod I've seen (10 gb) It covers so much it at least makes a great base for re-texturing the game. Majestic mountains may have the best looking mountains you can get in Skyrim IMO https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/11052 and Noble Skyrim (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/45807/ SE version should be chosen or landscape will look weird) is a departure from the vanilla look of Skyrim but looks fantastic.

Combat Tested is freaking amazing. It's the closest thing to being a Jedi in VR.

Interjecting to remind people about Mind OVR Matter.

Hmm, thanks for looking deeper into these. I wasn't aware of the outdated information.

I personally haven't experienced any performance woes with any of those mods. The game still runs butter smooth, and I'm on a i7 Ivy Bridge with a Maxwell Titan.

A maxwell Titan isn't a weak card so not surprising you have no issues iirc its about as strong as a 1070. Really not many of the mods were big performance issues though except Flora overhaul. Flora Overhaul is the most performance hungry due to a combination of larger higher poly trees which also cast larger shadows and the new grass which is also more performance hungry then vanilla. The other mods are just examples of stuff that have been issues for people and why. JK's not really an issue on its own, SMIM has multiple install options for those who need a bit more performance and Vivid weathers only seems to be problematic during certain weathers and from what I've read it was on weaker PC's.

You may notice issues specifically in towns not in their own worldspace like riverwood due to the combination of SMIM, JK's and Flora overhaul even with your system but probably only in a few spots. You might benefit from changes more in that it could give you the headroom to up SS a bit without sacrificing visuals too much though.

Bought a Vive Pro... anything I should know about that can cause problems when removing the old link box and simply plugging in the new? Do I have to deinstall/reinstall software?

-

Also, still rocking a 980ti, let's say something starts stuttering that wasnt stuttering before with the old Vive because the res is so much higher now... what's the best solution to get it smooth again until new graphics cards come out? Putting the Steam VR apllication multiplier down from 1 to something like 0.6 or something?

My Google Fu is failing me on these matters at the moment!

Yes. Ultimately you can make the Pro perform exactly the same as the normal Vive by adjusting the supersampling multiplier down.

Features a SteamVR logo at the end for anyone unclear on whether or not it was actually getting VR support on PC.

Or keep it at 1 and just lower the offending games in the advanced section. I personally like to give each game their own value since it's obviously best to use as much SS as your system can handle. That recent update was well overdue and as good as I imagined it would be.

I've just tried the Vive Pro for the first time, I put it on and I was seeing small colorful sparks everywhere as if the screen was burning with electricity... it looked cool but I was afraid that the thing was borked out of the box. Luckily that went away rather quickly, an electrician or screen technician maybe know what that was about? I have no idea!
Then I went straight into the Steam VR settings and to my surprise, it actually auto adjusted to 0.6... I was just guessing in my previous post, didn't expect it to actually be that exact value. But the Steam menu desktop view is still not very smooth, it's like having screen tearing but only at that part of the VR menu, everything else seems to be fine.

The image quality is very nice even with non native res, way better than the old Vive at native res, the higher res display makes a big difference on it's own. I also noticed that the screen was more evenly illuminated, my old Vive had a bit of light bleed going on to the left of the screen, it was subtle but noticable when everything was black. What I also immediately noticed is that the sound is not exactly the same as with my Deluxe Audio Strap, I always need to adjust to new headphones but I expected them to be indistinguishable, which is not the case... at the moment I liked the old sound better but that is maybe only because I havent adjusted to it , I'm familiar with this sort of problem with other headphones.

I only quickly tested Space Pirate Trainer, Beat Saber and Google Earth VR to see if there are any differences or incompatibilities and performance issues. Performance wise it feels the same as before, have not run into any compatibility issues yet but I need to test more.

My first impression is very positive, after 2 years of regular Vive I was really looking for a headset with better screen res, I'm sure I will adapt to it rather quickly tho and then looking forward to the next thing (hopefully that will be priced a little lower maybe Pimax, where is LG?)

One could say I finished BoxVR, altough that's not really how the game works but I've played all the different exercise scenarios more than once, my favorites are 2 of the power and half of the endurance levels, now I've also played the 40 minutes extreme endurance which was quite fun but could use more and longer squat heavy levels imo, the ones in the power section are all around the 4-5 minute mark only. Maybe it's time to try out the music generator, when I first tried it it got stuck in a loading loop and since then I never touched it again, but there were quite a few updates in the mean time.

What the...

So Zen just released an update to Pinball FX2 VR that includes three free tables added to the base package: Jaws, ET, and Back To The Future (from the FX 3 game). But it's only for the Oculus store version. Sony and Steam are left out, at least for the time being.

That ET table in particular looks fantastic. I like my VR Pinball like I like my real life pinball, full of lights. I want them to look like a Christmas tree trying to induce a seizure.

I didn't even realize this was a source of confusion. I thought, for sure, they confirmed SteamVR support when it was first unveiled. I never even realized people were worried about the PC side.

I think it's the fact that EVERY time they actually mention VR in the marketing material (including this trailer), they only mention PSVR. I know in the thread for this trailer in particular there was a lot of confusion about it from people who hadn't looked it up.

Played 4 hours of Township Tale alpha with a friend. Wow, the crafting in this game is super intense with the amount of things you can craft, really amazing. Can play it for free right now by signing up for their Discord channel, and following the steps in the "Getting Started" tab.

Yeah I'm jealous, as I got Steam version of PFX2 VR. Helps that I did not buy the 2D version either. I suspect it'll prove to other platforms in time, like pretty much any non-Oculus funded thing.

Yeah. I never bought the 2D version on those either. I stopped buying pancake versions once I started waiting for VR versions. Kind of regret that now, though, because Zen delisted pancake FX2 and there are a couple of tables I never got around to purchasing. And those that didn't make it into 3 are now no longer purchasable. One of my reasons for really trying to figure out how to fine tune the SuperDepth3D shader is so that the Pinball games can be played in 3D. And I'm definitely regretting that some of those tables are gonna be lost forever now:(

I really need to get in to that. I got locked out of my Discord account so I've been putting this off.
