The amount of players that buy multiple copies of this game is really high. Heck, a lot of youtubers buy new games just to make trick shot videos on easier targets.

40 million players kicking in a $20-$40 initial fee, still needs lootboxes just to keep the lights on for those tiny indie devs at blizzard

Constructive, discussion provoking criticism. The loot boxes in OW have been pretty well discussed by this point...

Edit: I am aware of the extreme irony given my profile name/pic :p

Wishful thinking, but I was hoping the anniversary was where they would announce a unified account system between console/PC similar to Fortnite. I love how I can make progress on my same account regardless of the platform I am playing it on.

Gimmie that dapper skin!

Smurfs aside, the success is deserved. Only Blizzard games keep me going back as much as I do for this and Diablo (and previously WoW). They're on a different level.

PS. That formal wear skin had best be a Reinhardt in a tux!!

At least the loot boxes are paying for new content. Compare them to Destiny for example, where loot boxes are paying for more events centred around lootboxes. That's fucking crazy.

Loot boxes are still evil though, I'd rather pay for my choice of skin.

Still not even close to the 70 million of the money printing machine Hearthstone.

I haven't played since Ana was released. The matchmaking and balancing of the teams was terrible so I gave it up and traded the game in.

Have those things gotten better?

Not as high as i though, but still huge.

Siege has 30 million for comparison.
The Divison has 20 million.

I really miss some updates on Fortnite and PUBG player numbers...

You can actually create different accounts on PS4 without paying anything (your PS+ subscription on the main account works for those too), and this is just an example. It's certainly not 40 million players that bought the game.

I bought the game day one and haven't spent a single € since then ~2000h later. I'll take cosmetic-only lootboxes if that means free modes, heroes and maps during all this time.

Won't be able to see the video for a while, but definitely the OW Team and Jeff of the OverWatch Team definitely should be commended on quite the accomplishment. Much like most of their titles, Blizzard knocked it out of the park again.

They didn't say but it really feels like this is the last chance to get those event skins.

If you found it to be that bad back then, I doubt you'll like it now.

CoD, WoW, Candy Crush and Overwatch make up 2/3 of Activision Blizzards Revenue. OI is even higher percentage.

Heartstone seems to be on a downward trend for a long time now...

I think more likely they'll bring back every skin each anniversary, but stop doing the past skins during each event thing, but even more likely both. I wouldn't worry about not getting the skins you want in the future tbh - they're 'free' money when they're made available again.

If any game deserves it its this.

2 years on, picked this game up at launch, and still play it almost daily.

The game itself wasn't bad. I just hated that the game intentionally tried to keep people's winning percentages at around 50% and every match was either a blowout or we crushed them. My friends and I only ever had a handful of close games.

Yeah but we have no idea if this is 40million "paid" player base like people mentioned you can create multiple accounts for free on Playstation and Xbox without the need to purchase the game.

If it's 40 million paid that's great.

If it's 40 million accounts regardless of paid or not well its still good but not as great

40 mil players doesn't equal 40 mil paying customers though. Smurf characters are rife in this game and it costs nothing on console.
Pretty sure PSN and XBL cost money.

I believe there's pathetic shitty players that pay two subs per year because they can't do well at their own skill level, I just don't believe it makes up a significant portion of 40m.

The games mmr does make it harder for anything more than duos to climb for some reason but no issues with solo q and solo q is generally the best way to climb.

Advice usually given to people complaining about being stuck at a certain elo is to stop stacking(among other things) since "elo hell" doesn't exist.

sounds like we are getting a expansion at blizzcon. only question is what are they selling in it? given their promise not to sell heros/maps it makes me wounder. I guess we will find out at blizzcon.
