He updated the article after getting ahold of the QN65Q9FN:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnar...-the-tv-titans/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

"[UPDATE: Since writing the article below, I've been able to repeat my head to head tests using a Samsung 65-inch Q9FN rather than the 55-inch available to me for the original head to head. And strangely, despite both sets seemingly using the same number of dimming zones, the 65-inch model clearly looks brighter - especially in mid brightness color tones - than the 55 inch.

So much so that it essentially reverses the situation described in the original report below where the LG OLED could quite often look brighter than the Samsung set with mid-bright HDR content.

As a result, while the 55-inch Q9FN available in Europe is still a class-leadingly good 55-inch TV, if you decide to go the Q9FN route rather than the OLED route, I'd strongly recommend stepping up to Samsung's 65-inch model if finances allow.

I would also say that the latest Samsung firmware (1023 versus 1020 when I tested the 55Q9FN) seems to have raised slightly the 55-inch model's typical brightness level with HDR content. Though the 65-inch running the same 1023 firmware still clearly has a brightness advantage."

This reeks of:

xzljvuhri3mc0wirn7br8prspp.gif

Their QC is abysmal, no way going from last year's shit, could John Archer just say "stump up for the 65" he would need more Q9's to definitively say that.

It's like the 75" owners, with some saying the bars are really grey in particular films, but others say they are jet black.

Also Flatpanels said that OLED's had brighter looking peaks too, in certain scenarios, but who knows how much of Samsung's poor build quality has a bearing on this.

C8 is slightly brighter and has BFI. Up to you if it's worth the $400 or so for that. I wouldn't really worry that rtings has the B7 at 8.6 and the C8 at 8.5 or whatever. Probably just comes down to the C8 not being a very big advancement as far as OLEDs over the previous year models. 17 was really kind of the year LG just really put everything else to shame with their OLEDs, hence the very high rating for the B7. Now there is actually competition from FALDs worthy of discussion this year, but the C8 is still pretty much the best you can do.

The processor doing the upscaling for older content is mainly what I was looking at, but it seems like the B7 isn't a slouch in this regard either, and I don't know that the difference is worth the extra money.

Thanks for the advice.

I recently got same tv and i just followed this video for the most part.

tho i did set the motion flow film mode to high. And while neutral and warm pops more to me expert 1 gives me less eye strain and just in general once you adjust looks good.

Also remember to turn on Enhanced HDMI for the ports and that ports 2&3 are the full bandwidth ones.

Thanks. I'll keep these in mind when the TV arrives tomorrow

65B7 can be gotten for 55B7 prices right now with CC shenanigans. Got mine for $1399 total. No contest over C8 imo in terms of value. Especially with the vertical banding seemingly still a crap shoot.

If you don't care about pricing then yeah C8 is a no brainer. If you don't need to make the decision now, wait until closer to BF. That's when the pricing on most TVs experience that large drop to where they are going to generally settle.

Just got Blank Panther UHD too. Saving it for the weekend to watch with the missus.

C7, theatre like conditions and Black panther with the missus on a comfy couch with snacks.... life is good my friends.

How's the HDR btw?

Apparently Infinity War's UHD has a release date of 8/14, that'll be a good one.

Don't think it's going to blow anyone away with bright highlights like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but I think it's very good. Excellent contrast and colors and natural looking skin tones.

This scene is demo worthy in 4K HDR. The fine detail and color on everyone's outfit just looks amazing.

It's very soundbar friendly, I'll tell you that. Disney looking out for us poor apartment dwellers. :)
Haha, well that's good then.

I honestly preordered the fancy one with some cool cover art on it cuz I thought it looked neat. I'll totally pick it up for 15 bucks or something this fall. Just prolly not worth 35. (Which I also did with Avengers. Don't let me down Disney!)

Yeah, you're right about that. I've gotten very accustomed to not paying more than $10 for a movie on iTunes so even $25 for this disc was a hard pill to swallow but I really wanted it in my collection.

Totally. Even being big on the best quality audio, it has to be pretty much top tier for me to get on UHD, otherwise I'd just get on iTunes or regular blu ray.

I have been offered the Sony A1 65" for a pretty low price, and I was thinking about getting it. The only thing holding me back is the A8F being better suited for wallmounting. Does anyone have the A1 standing on a tv unit and does it look good?

How legitimate is Greentoe? I'm playing around with the Chance of Success on a couple of TVs by plugging in prices and even on $2-300 off it's still in the green.

Bought the 65" B7A last night. Gets delivered Friday morning. Guy at Best Buy tried to sell me expensive AudioQuest HDMI cables for "the best quality." That's still a factually incorrect thing, right? I've always understood it to be, but maybe that's changed.

Ehhh, it's not as "factually incorrect" as it used to be, but it's still a pretty binary "it works or it doesn't" kind of thing.

You want "premium certified" so it'll pass full 18.2 gbps. Your old HDMI cables may or may not work, depending on length, but you can always try em out first. The longer the cable, the more that matters.

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-11...8&qid=1526479457&sr=8-3&keywords=premium+hdmi

Monoprice stuff usually works well for the price (although I do have AQ, which work fine).

Correct. Monoprice or Amazon like these: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15427 Just look for that orange logo and they'll work with all 4K and HDR compatible devices.

Very very incorrect. Amazon branded cables are perfect

Thanks, all.

Now to figure out which 4k blu-ray player to get. Something with DV support.

Options are somewhat limited currently. I'd probably go Sony X700 (the DV update is coming this summer). The LG that supports it sounds like it has some issues; noise for one. Also imho LG is the last place I'd look for a solid disc player.

Last choice would be the Oppo players (which are great, I love my 203), but likely makes no practical sense for the cost increase for 99.9% of people.

Panasonic has one on the way too, but it'll be more expensive.

Apparently the just released UBK90 has better internals than the UP970, and doesn't have the noise issue that the UP970 does. The vagueness of "summer" for the X700 has me weary, TBH. Oppo is way outside of my range.

I finally saw all 2018 models on showroom floor while picking up Black Panther at Best Buy.

The C8 stand looks awful. I don't know what they were thinking , although if you were mounting it, obviously it wouldn't be an issue. But still.

Watched some stuff on Sony 85" 900f screen. Humongous screen. I'm not sure it has the appropriate number of zones either for such a large panel, but something has to give at that size and price.

Sony A8F OLED aesthetically looked the best to me in person. Minimalist look. A not terrible stand. It's all screen and you don't even know it's a Sony outside of the tiny name marking in the lower left hand side of the screen.

And then the Q9FN...it looked really good. Nice and bright. But....Samsung. and no Dooby Vision. But when a black scene came on it was...black..got me curious about it I can't lie

Heard that Sony Atmos bar again too...and I need it

I have the LG UP970 that has DV. If they're releasing a newer model, you may be able to find the 970 on sale. I have one of the older ones that can get a bit loud at times, but doesn't bother me all that much. I personally hate waiting on vague timelines for firmware updates. LG pulled the same thing with the 970.

Don't become one of the AVphile fools who chases after some Platonic ideal of perfect video or audio quality at the expense of everything else.

If watching in the dark gives you eye strain, and bias lighting fixes it, use bias lighting.

I added an LED strip for bias lighting as it would give me eye strain if I watched tv with all of my lights off. I love it and highly recommend it if eye strain is an issue for you. If it matters I have a 65" B7 OLED.

Ahhhhh, it has definitely been used that one time....

=)

Idk, all the built in LG apps work really well imho and the rest of the movies I've been watching have been on disc. I'm sure it'll get more use, just not sure when...

Lol yeah fair enough. I plan to only buy discs when it's something that's reference but digital is just infinitely more convenient.

Picked up a few more 4K UHDs yesterday (Braveheart, Gladiator, and Black Panther). Tested out a few scenes from Gladiator, it's an incredible transfer.

I'm on an LG B6, and I gotta admit, I'm HDR Bright all the way. I know Standard is more "accurate" colors or whatever, but I just can't get over that yellow/sepia tone over everything. It's impossible to see a blue sky lol. I've found a happy medium that works for me, going with HDR Bright and taking the color temp to about W10

Totally agree. I grabbed Fantastic Beasts on Vudu and from a PQ standpoint, I'm not sure i'd be able to tell it apart from a disc version. It looks very good.

Also, I'm not even sure why the audio thing is a problem. Audio bitrate is so minimal compared to video bitrate, so I'm not sure why lossless streaming isn't a thing.
