I don't think I'm getting the remaster. The price just doesn't warrant the purchase for me, and I refuse to be of these fans that says 'yeah, it's looks lazy, but I'm getting it because it's Dark Souls!' Fuck that noise.

I've jumped into Dark Souls PTD with a fresh, deprived start. I'm now remembering why I bailed on playing it years ago: it's janky all fuck. Bell Gargoyles are the goddamn worst and I can't kite them. One keeps ending up just riding the fire of the second one, leaving me no windows to attack. Get stuck in a corner, try to run to get room, then they coordinate so that I can't roll through one of their attacks. Fat and Lean seem easy in comparison. At least in their stage, you have room and obstacles that can give you a leg-up. Here, no walls, no room, two gargoyles cover the width of the roof easy with their far-reaching hits and ability to simply strike at just different times to make rolling useless.

Will try again tomorrow. Might farm for vitality and stamina.

Upgrade your weapon (it's more important than your character level at this point) and use gold pine resin, the fight should last less than 30 seconds

Woot for the tip. Thank you. I'll try that.

e: If there is anything DS3 did that greatly improved on DS1, it's got to be controls. Omnidirectioal rolling just makes sense. Also, being able to sprint when locked onto target is excellent.

anotehr e: I gotta say, I'm already annoyed by some of the level design in Dark Souls after 4 or 5 hours (17 total on PC, but long time has past since my last try). I love the sheer volume of locations and how big it feels with the vertical traveling. But so far, it's often full of such small battle stages or thin pathways of travel that it feels like you have to battle every enemy you encounter. It's a slug's progression. Dying at bosses repeatedly makes the traveling grow boring. I've managed to run as far as Blighttown (by way of Valley of Drakes) and it takes some good rolling to get past enemies. While DS3 took about 40 hours to play through, this one looks to get 60-80 hours on first playthrough. Likely more for me since I'm not very good. And another note on controls: Using circle for both sprint, jump, and roll is awful. /rant

The Gargoyles are always a wake up call for me in DS1 since there's no omniroll and it takes me time to adjust and relearn fighting them without lock-on. They always wreck me for a bit. Same with the Balder knights in the Parish. I try to roll to their side and end up rolling into their rapiers. Ouch.

The Network test was an exception since you could two-shot them with the Black Knights sword.

Woot! Got the halbert from Undead Parish, upped it to +2 with the blacksmith, then destroyed both Bell Gargoyles and Moonlight Butterfly. Both were tough fights for very different reasons. NOW I feel like I'm going places. Almost always wearing no armor, upping STR and DEX usually, occasionally stamina. For Moonlight Butterfly, I found it to be useful to wear some armor for slower rolling while the magic missiles flew into the stone instead of me. The flying orbs though were a bit more difficult to handle, but wasn't too bad. Back to feeling like I'm having a good time. lower Undead Burg though...

I wouldn't die listening to that in an elevator. :P

I'm still on the fence about the remaster. I only ever beat the game once. Would be fun to go through it again without performance issues. See some things I missed. But it can be so stressful to play!

On the Gaping Dragon in Depths.

Oh, poor hit boxes... my old friend.

explanation: walked behind boss, not even in physical contact nor is boss currently taking action with tail, insta-killed by tail. This is one annoying sponge of a boss.

Wow I just realized the switch version isn't out any time soon. I may break and get it for PS4 now and Switch again later for portable souls. I need to replay this at a decent framerate NOW.

Watching LobosJr's playthrough of the DS1 Scorched Contract mod, and this is a really well made mod. I like the ability to choose your own path somewhat, it's very in keeping with DS1's world. Now if I just had a PC to play it! :)

Bloodborne Alpha ride never ends

Living Livers were basically what Boss Souls are in Dark Souls. Each boss has one.

That menu looks very Demon's Souls. I suppose it's not much different to the final game, just a list - but visually it looks more unwieldy.

So after completing DSR tonight I decided to boot up DS3. Played it two years ago for a grand total of two hours, according to my old save file. So yeah, not much at all. I always wanted to like the Soulsborne games, but my fear of the unknown and a crippling aversion of tension/stress (the result of a burnout years ago) kept me from enjoying them. Looking back, it feels weird I couldn't even get through the tutorial area without keeping my shield up and worrying about enemies trying to ambush me around every corner.

Looks like DSR (and Dragon's Dogma earlier this year) helped me finally overcome those demons, however. I ran through the tutorial area just now, merrily smashing undead heads in with my mace. Felt oddly liberating.

Tutorial boss went down easy. Managed to hit me once in his first form, in the second... I dunno if he even did anything? I kept hitting him in the back while he mutated and he died before I knew it. Good effort, Iudex Gundyr, but you're no Manus or Gwyn.

Really looking forward to this playthrough now. After doing a quality build in DSR (but focusing on light movement and backstabbing) I chose the Cleric class because I want to go Str/Fth this time.

One thing I noticed, but maybe it's just me: the framerate seems to dip at times? Especially in Firelink Shrine. This is on a 3,5 year old regular PS4, for what it's worth.

So the cemetery wasn't difficult and I even got the Uchigatana by kicking that hobo off the ledge (not that I will ever use it in this playthrough). But High Wall of Lothric is kicking my ass. Died a bunch to that knight past the wyvern, until I figured out I should probably slip by his patrol route.

Vordt is dead. Took me a lot of tries.

I'm not sure I like every boss having at least two phases. It basically doubles the amount of attempts I need to beat it since I have to learn even more attack patterns, haha. That asinine 'bonfire to boss' run still being there doesn't help either.

yes, there is a lot of phases, very BB like. Why not pick up DS2 before you get too deep in 3? it doesn't deserve the bad rap it has, imo, I really do think its it a fantastic game.

Slowly making my way through the Undead Settlement. Just met Siegmeyer Siegward and I thought I might be in quite a pickle when that fire demon showed up, but Siegward carried me through it. Nice to see NPC cooperation without having to resort to summon signs. Feels more organic this way, even if this just might have been a one-time thing.

With the souls I got from the High Wall of Lothric, Vordt and the first part of the Undead Settlement I could finally buy a certain key and now I look like this:

Fashion Souls, aww yeah. Will probably swap out the skirt and hands for something plate armored, though, to better capture the battle cleric look I'm going for. Or keep the skirt and swap out the robe.

Now to finally level up. Aside from pouring two levels into Vigor I hadn't done that yet because that damn key was so expensive. Hopefully leveling will make some enemies a bit easier to deal with...

I plan on completing DS2 some day, much like Bloodborne. But considering my backlog, and the amount of time a full NG playthrough can take, I decided to go for DS3 because I think it lends itself best for a back-to-back playthrough with Remastered. From what I know of DS2 and how it fits with DS and especially DS3 it sort of feels like the middle child of the family (TV Tropes warning). If that makes sense.

Oh boy, you are going to love the DLC.
...

The DLC bosses will have three or even four phases, don't they?
