So in the loop,
Coulson takes the serum and lives > Quake is unable to stop Talbot and is absorbed > Talbot uses Quakes power to crack open the earth and take all the Gravitonium > Chaos.

So the question is how did Mack die in the original timeline? The way Yoyo explained it, he did not die being killed by those aliens but being 'burned' away. I guessed the snap too but Yoyo said this a long time before IW

Coulson and May taking a break in Tahiti
Is it just me or is Coulson lowering her onto the sand before they get it on?

Yeah but why didn't Coulson take the serum this time?

Now I couldn't possibly tell you why the loop broke this time.
Near as I can guess, either

Yo-Yo's speech got to Jemma enough that she didn't outright inject Coulson with the entire serum and instead left it on the table for him to do it himself

Or Yo-Yo talking to Coulson at his bedside right before gave him the idea.

They've been building up Yo-Yo's being the one to change the future to the point that nothing else would make sense. I personally lean toward the former - that in the original timeline they just injected it all into Coulson while he was still unconscious, which made the serum unavailable when Talbot got the upper hand on Daisy.

Holy fucking shit, havent seen a more emotional finale since LOST.

So good.

Give Ian a damn emmy, his scene was amazing. Sad to see him go though, poor Fitz cant catch a break. :(

Good ending, the feels!! It's really a shame Quake ain't in the MCU movies man. But in a way this mirrors comic books in which shit goes on that's completely unconnected to other things happening in the world. /shrug. Those fight FX were damn impressive considering the drop in budget.

Shit...I just realized we didn't get to know what happened to Deke.

He already stated to Daisy he was heading out to explore the world.

Right in the middle of that very emotional farewell I got distracted by Daisy's incredibly tight trousers. Everyone else in their casual jeans.

I don't think it could be either. Remember the last time Daisy was spotted alive, she was yelling at someone (which she didn't have a reason to unless Coulson didn't take the serum as he and Davis were the only ones there).

Maybe they are still in the loop and not know it yet.

While I'm happy we will get another season, I would have been perfectly satisfied if this episode was a series finale. Something I was not expecting going into this episode.

No I expected him to fit the description. Even the actor looked a wimp.
That said him being the big bad would have probably been more interesting than boring too-fat-for-his-ugly-costume Talbot

Yeah, nope. I'm not sure how anyone could think that random Kree would have been more interesting than Talbot, who had five seasons of build-up and was honestly a tragic story as he died trying to do the right thing.

I really dig this tidbit from CBR:
Following Fitz's death, Simmons visited Deke's room in the Lighthouse, only to find it completely cleared out of all the things he had hoarded during his time in the present. This confirmed Fitz and Simmons' theory that, if they successfully changed the timeline, Deke would simply blink out of existence.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbr.com/agents-shield-fitz-death-timeloop/amp/

I forgot about that scene. I don't think even the writers know if Deke blinked out of existence but I liked that they left it open either way.

But it didn't confirm that, as CBR said. He could have blinked out of existence but he also said he was leaving the Lighthouse to go explore.

(And the producers have already confirmed that the actor will be back next season.)

What a fantastic finale and like a lot of you, I thought this would've worked as the series finale as well.

I dreaded it, I ran from it,
I'm glad destiny did not arrive.

So what's the deal with Fitz? I'm confused

In the first half of the season, Hunter helps Fitz enter a cryogenic freeze. Enoch then brings him into space and they wait for 100 years for Fitz to awaken where the rest of the team is.

They then came back from the future and Fitz died. That means the Fitz who froze himself is still floating in space, waiting for the 100 years to pass. They're going to go find him.

Yeah, his stuff disappearing because of him blinking out of existence would only make sense if he was never there to hoard it in the first place. Dude just took everything when he left. lol

The show is coming back so it ain't permanent. I'm sure if they planned on legitimately killing Coulson, they would have just allowed the show to end.

Nope, that's not resolution at all.
Well, Coulson ending up in Tahiti was something the showrunners wanted to do with Coulson as a conclusion to his story since season 1. This also wouldn't be the first time they've written and end to a main character's arc on the show and didn't have them come back (Ward, Bobbi, Hunter, Mike Peterson, Raina, Tripp, and now Talbot all come to mind).

Going back to the quote about Coulson's film death resolution from Jeph Loeb:

While Avengers: Infinity War is already jam-packed with more than 20 heroes amassed across the MCU, there's still hope for this long-awaited reunion. "It's certainly something that will get resolved, and it may get resolved in a very surprising way," says head of Marvel Television and S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeph Loeb.

We don't know the original question posed to Jeph Loeb, only his answer. The question could have been about how Coulson being alive and having still not told the Avengers is a dangling plot thread that they were wondering if there will be resolution to. In a case like that, Coulson dying would resolve that "in a very surprising way", maybe not in a satisfying way fans would hope but that loose end would be tied up with Coulson being dead again. That interview was before they knew if the show would be renewed, so unless they have a potential plan to bring him "back to life" in the films after being "killed" in the show (an interesting irony), I think that his death may have been that resolution.

It's gonna be awkward that this still-alive Fitz isn't the one that Gemma married, but to be fair the still-alive Fitz IS "their" Fitz. He's from their time, for him just a month or two has passed, same as for them. The Fitz that died was "future Fitz," who was naturally in the future, not a time-traveler like the rest of them. He's a 70-something-years-older artifact from a future that no longer exists. Enough so that him not blinking out of existence kinda tells us officially that Deke didn't blink either.

That would've affected me a lot more if I hadn't been thinking about the second Fitz for most of the season. Iain is great though.

Daisy can't say much about Fitz, she was still harping on making Coulson take the LIVE syringe, right past the moment she went to go fight Talbot.

pJukxIf.gif

If she had known he hadn't taken the LIVE option, she'd hold him down and make him, she said this.
She yells out for him to go back and take it, in what could have been the last interaction between the two of them.
He doesn't want to take it.

How is that not symbolic of the "forcing Daisy to get her powers back when she didn't want them" arc?

I liked his little hint: "Find the power in your arms, to beat him senseless"

Graviton. Gravitron sounds like that faux Megatron in Transformers the Movie (the actual one, from the 80's)

DFoG3gH.gif

I'll add, nicely done, VFX, not just how it looks, but continuity looks good. Both the flaming car and the dark color building match between the 2 camera angles.
Thanks for sharing these gifs. Such awesome looking scenes.

Graviton vs. Daisy gave me Man of Steel vibes. And weirdly enough, so did Graviton's suit.

Great stuff. Twists and turns I didn't see coming. I admit I didn't think of the second Fitz. I just assumed he'd survived off screen and they were using the spaceship to hunt for Talbot.

Coulson made a pretty dangerous play. He does give Daisy a hint to "find the strength in your arms" but she clearly doesn't get it. If she hadn't looked down and noticed the serum, whoops.

The beach scene was perfect. Would have made a perfect series ender, but in glad there's at least one more.

And I'm glad they didn't do the Infinity War thing. You know the thing. Would have undercut the emotions in the episode. Even though we know it's going to happen.

Iain deserves a major role on a quality movie, or at least a "prestige drama". The guy is THAT good.

Not that I want him to be off AoS... nope. Not after the season finale. Fuck it. I'm not crying, you're crying.

guys they brought back Ward like 50 times, Coulson and May will return.

and Iain's acting is just phenomenal. Best actor on the show.
Coulson has spent at least like half this last season learning to accept his fate and his arc in accepting it was complete, with even everyone else accepting his decision rather than fighting him on it. Of course they could write a way to bring him back, but unless his mind is downloaded into a computer/LMD or they invent a new plot device to bring him back from the dead that will be a focal point of next season, I think they plan on keeping him dead.

I could see them finding Fitz in the first episode and then just cryofreezing Coulson until they can find a cure though.
