Whoa whoa whoa WTF, I just finished S3E10 and (in 'The Genius term') am having mental breakdown right now.
ADSFAEFDASFDSVVFGTafawrerdf.................
Goddamn that was brilliant, unexpected, sad, beautiful, i'm speechless.
Dong-min you magnificent bastard, can't believe he managed to pull that bluff.
That believing in yourself bit really hit hard for me too... i need to lie down for a bit.

While i already said that 3x10 Chain Auction is an absolutely amazing hour of television i still cannot praise it enough.

It has everything: superb guests, great game design, fantastic main match, mindblowing deathmatch, truly genius plays. Even behind the scenes clip is awesome in it's own right.

Deathmatch game Monorail is deep enough to warrant analysis of it's own:
https://chaosatthesky.wordpress.com/2014/12/08/the-genius-by-a-skymins-mind-7/

And as i've been saying -- you can take very legitimate life lessons from episodes of The Genius.

Made a D&D alignment meme. Thoughts?
qXTUUw1.jpg

  • Kyungran goes without saying. Other Lawful Good candidates are Junghyun and Dongmin.
  • Neutral Good went pretty easily to Jinho. He was just generally kind, and I remember what he did for Eunkyul and how willing he was to go to the death match with Doohee.
  • I think Yohwan was just doing what he could to even the playing field for everyone post-token, even if it was also equally out of self-interest. Can't think of anyone else in this spot tbh.
  • Lawful Neutral fits Dongmin to a tee.
  • There are a ton of contestants who I consider True Neutral, like Yoohyun or Yooyoung. But Hyunmin stands out because he didn't really give a f**k about anything but winning. I'm about to rewatch Season 3 with my folks so my perspective might change. What do y'all think?
  • Lmao Sangmin. Kyunghoon too, but we need someone for Chaotic Evil.
  • Gura is the only person I'd consider "evil" on the show, but at worst he was just a mean sexist bully and not overtly malevolent. In his last moments on the show you could tell he relented and was kind of apologetic. Still, he was involved in almost all the betrayal and drama in the first half of Season 1.
  • Junseok acted plenty selfish in Season 4, which made him a great quasi-antagonist. Season 2 Hweejong too.
  • Sangmin's goddamn pervert dog.

^ Looking at your picture you realize how Sangmin is very much connected to all these people. Only Junseok he barely had any interactions but with everyone else -- all of them either partnered with Sangmin or were burned by him or both.

Several days ago Garnet Wager podcast finished 1st season. It was alright, even if i was skipping all non-Genius segments -- i am glad they provided timestamps:

http://scanlinemedia.com/tag/the-genius/

Also, TG producer is making a new show:

based on the name it is based on escape rooms? It's not looking good so far but we'll see.

I love that podcast. Refreshing alternative take on the show and the characters. Looking forward to their future coverage.

I love escape rooms, but KHD seems ill-suited for a show like that.

I just want to thank OP for the recommendation. I've blitzed through the first three seasons of the show after your recommendation, and I'm currently up to Season 4 Episode 7. The standard of the game design has been incredible and I really like the wide variety of strategies the design of the game allows players to use. After finishing the first season I wasn't sure if I really wanted more as it had been so perfect, and season 2 left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth*, but season three and four (thus far) have really gotten back up to the standard of the first season.

*
Aside from the contestants being a lot colder, more cutthroat (although in a lot of cases they were cutthroat in a self-sabotaging way, backstabbing and betraying people pointlessly), and how the alliances formed, I felt the standard of contestants as a lot lower (particularly in the latter half). It was clear from episode 7 that Sangmin was clearly going to win just because of how weak everybody was (Yohwan in particular) especially compared to him. The personalities in the season just didn't really work for me, and when none of them particularly stood out as decent competitors it just got to a stage where I was wondering if I should fast-forward/skip episodes.

The Monopoly Game lived up to what I'd heard about it (both in a good way, and in a negative way) so I'd always recommend people watch at least up to that point, but after that it becomes clear who is going to win and nothing particularly interesting happened so I'd drop it to just go ahead to when things recovered.

I mostly agree but if you skip the later half you miss

I wonder if the Laser Chess game will be played again, because from my understanding of how it was played in this episode, it seems like an incredibly dumb game. It could be interesting if they allowed the laser to be moved... Otherwise, the first player to move will always win by using Yo Hwan's strategy.

Kinda bummed about this elimination because she was one of the few players who are actually fun this season. Meh.

I'm really digging Season 2 so far (6 episodes in), but good lord is it brutal.

I'm rooting for Yohwan as of right now. Sangmin feels more like a final boss than anybody else at this point, but I would not be surprised if Jinho made it to the finals again. Sangmin's really good at forging alliances during the challenges, but based on Season 1, he'd probably fall apart as soon as he landed himself in a death match.

It's definitely the meanest the show has ever been up to this point. The player ID mechanic was just begging for that kind of development, though.

That episode in particular was just betrayal on top of betrayal, lol.

I have yet to watch past Episode 6, but it seems like the majority is really gunning to eliminate
Jinho and Yohwan at this point, and they're kinda outnumbered, so I assume it's gonna get even messier with Doohee finally being gone.

Episode 6 is the best episode they've ever done, but it's also the most Survivor episode they've ever done. Anyways, I sympathize with Doohee but at the same time it's just a game lol. I don't think what Jiwon and Yooyoung did was so egregious that they deserved the ire of the viewing public.

EDIT:
I really think Jiwon might be the most unlikeable person cast in the entirety of the Genius. There's nothing going for him.
I liked him a lot but probably cause I liked him on other variety shows. Personally I think
Season 3 Dongmin was really shitty with his misogyny and oppressive leadership style. He got better after the big Monorail moment though and in Season 4 I was a pretty big fan.

I was willing to forgive and forget until Doohee revealed that Jiwon had called him. What he pulled in there was just straight-up sleazy shit.

Whoa, I didn't get that vibe from Dongmin at all. I really liked his style of play, he was basically the leader and he did all in his power that he could to keep people on his side safe. And I loved how when the numbers dwindled and the game became more individual he became quite lethal. How was he misogynistic? The only thing I can think of was the teasing between him and Ahyoung which was so funny to me, it all seemed in good fun.

I can see why he wouldn't be your favorite but I have no idea how you could put him as the worst member overall. Like, even worse than Eunji?

Just rewatched Season 3, and Dongmin comes across as super mean-spirited with his comments. That by itself isn't a big deal because frankly it's kind of funny, but at the same time Ahyoung and Yeonjoo really bore the brunt of his rage. Those two were awful Genius players, but I think Dongmin treated them like shit more than he did Hyunmin or even the other male contestants. There's also this, which definitely colors his actions on the show. Eunji also sucks though lol.

Ah I didn't know about that controversy, that sucks. But just to speak of his actions on the show, all of his "rage" was just him joking wasn't it? At least that's the impression I got. I don't think he was ever actually angry at anyone. Even when Yeonjoo told the other team his strategy of intentionally going to DM right away he was just exasperated not angry.

Like this is just fucking hilarious to me

The death match in S2E7 is fucking bonkers.

I can see there aren't a ton of Jiwon fans in this thread, lol. He's not one of my favorites, but I was sorta rooting for him to win just because I think it's more interesting seeing how him and the rest of the newbies will try and take Sangmin down (because that's gotta happen, right?). Dude's immortal right now. Literally.

Main match in S2E7 is fucking bonkers! The secret of the dice, Noh Hongchul, Junghyun constantly walking on Sangmin and the way how Sangmin covered Hongchul's dice when the he discovered the gimmick...

And behind the scenes clip about their after parties is great too. An image of drunk Sangmin standing in a flower pot and Yohwan's wife ("the unofficial contestant") riding a scooter... Ah...

Finished Season 2.
Yohwan got so close...

I unfortunately got spoiled on Season 3's winner, but I feel like a lot of people praise that as the high point of the series, so it'll still be fun to watch.

I'm in the same boat on being spoiled for Season 3's winner. However let me tell you that it is still my favorite season despite being spoiled.

I've watched the first 3 episodes of Season 3 so far and can already tell the Black Garnet mechanic is going to cause so much more chaos than the Immortality Token.

Also, for all the talk about Season 2 being especially savage, I felt like S3E3 was pretty damn mean!

holy crap s2e6

that was the most insane episode of anything i've watched in forever. if i'm honest, kind of loved it? nothing really felt out of bounds in terms of the parameters this show has already set with the audience, but it had more twists than an entire game of thrones season.

S2 is a lot more... bloodthirsty than S1, so i can see why people might be turned off, but man. i'm into this show for yelling at the TV with my girlfriend and that very much delivered.

The way loser took it was pretty classy.

Behind the scenes clip for Death Match of this episode shows a trick that wasn't in actual episode, it's weird how they put it in BTS:

S2E7 is far and away my favorite episode of Season 2 and has a moment that surpasses the "Open/Pass game gets split open" moment from Season 1. The editing's just so good.

That episode also got me yelling more than any other, haha.

I miss everyone from the S1 cast so much :(

Super Saiyan Sangmin will never stop being amazing.

I was happy with the deathmatch results as well. Now please just get useless Jiwon out of the way.

I think that this part of Season 2 is probably the most enjoyable. Its a nice way to ease into the GOAT season 3 at least.
