yes, that's a hella good deal. that exact machine would've cost around $2000 a year and a half ago.

what's the SSD size?

What was the website where I could redeem movie codes in order to get the 4K versions on iTunes? I want to add my digital movies to my Apple TV.

Even HD codes redeemed on iTunes, if there's a 4K version on the store, get redeemed in 4K. I tested this personally with Power Rangers and Transformers 5 (bought iTunes codes off a site for $2, got 4K versions of them). 4K codes should work exactly the same way. Only possible complication is if you're wanting them in 4K on any other service, like VUDU through MoviesAnywhere

I've got the itch to replace my late 2013 13" rMBP, but I feel a bit guilty because it still works really well (other than some screen flickering when watching full screen videos).

I have 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, dual core (obviously). Would be cool to double everything and go to 16gb/512gb and quad core at the same size.

Not huge on the touchbar and usb-c only, but I can live with those. Main thing is if they update the keyboard or not, as the keyboard on this 2013 model is quite good.

Just got that new hardware itch. If they don't update the MBPs I might consider the Dell XPS 15 or (less likely) maybe one of the Thinkpads. I'm kind of shocked at how well this MBP has held up now though after almost 5 years, so my first inclination is to stick with Apple.

I've noticed that my Watch app and my Apple Watch don't sync. I try putting on a new watch face but nothing happens. I've tried repairing the watch and yet nada. If I completely wipe the watch, will it keep my health stats?

I'm using most of my willpower to hold off buying a 10.5" iPad Pro until WWDC...even though I'm not convinced that they'll announce anything.

Does anyone have an issue where the audio box in Control Center is constantly "disconnecting" from the source? Every couple of days I will notice that it either shows the music app there (with nothing playing) while I'm playing Overcast or an older episode of a podcast while I'm playing a different one. The only way to get it back to normal is a reboot it seems. Super frustrating, this seems like a pretty basic thing.

I've got a few MacOS iTunes questions, if anyone could be so obliged.

First, the "Sound enhancer" setting in preferences: should I use this? It seems like it just adds a weird sort of reverb to me, but I could easily be wrong. Is it recommended?

Second, and this is mostly just a complaint, but why doesn't iTunes support FLAC in 2018? I'm over here ripping WAVs like a chump. Get with it, Tim! Are there seemingly any plans to add support in an OS update?

It's just an effect. If you like how it sounds why not use it but if you prefer non-altered audio keep it disabled. According to Apple "The Sound Enhancer increases the perceived "wideness" of the stereo effect by modifying bass and treble response." (https://support.apple.com/kb/PH19480)

I think the only reason iTunes does not support FLAC is because Apple wants people to use their own ALAC.

Thanks for the tip on Sound Enhancement. I'll try both options, and see which I prefer.

As for FLAC, this is understandable, but irritating. It may be sacrilege, but when I go to university I'm going to use a Windows desktop and my beloved MacBook Pro, so I'd like something platform agnostic and lossless. Hence, my current penchant for WAV. Thanks for your help!

ALAC doesn't play on Windows?

EDIT: just tested. Plays fine on Win 10 with Windows Media Player and VLC.

macOS and iOS actually added native FLAC support in macOS 10.13/iOS 11, so I don't know why the fuck iTunes still doesn't support it.

ALAC is platform agnostic, though - it's open-source and a number of Windows and Android players support it.

ALAC is actually open source now, so there's nothing stopping other platforms from playing Apple Lossless files (I know at least some media players do.)

It's also much smaller than WAV or AIFF< so that's why I chose to rip my tracks in that format.

Holy heck, this changes everything. Guess I have to rip my twenty CDs yet another time though... that's fine. Thanks for the tips, everybody!

And if you need FLAC in the future, it's easy to convert between ALAC and FLAC without any loss. I'm currently ripping 400 CDs into ALAC, but a handful of discs were damaged and I couldn't get a good rip. I downloaded FLAC versions and converted them to ALAC using dBpoweramp.

Since I have the CDs ripped in WAV at 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, can I just convert said files to ALAC using that or a similar tool?

I have the option of getting a new 13" MBP from work next week, or I could wait 4-6 weeks and maybe get a quad core if they are updated at WWDC. would likely be the base spec but updated to 16GB ram/512SSD

I'd be coming off a 2015 13" MBA.

Got a 27" 5K iMac at work today.

This screen is going to ruin every other monitor ever for me. I don't think I can go back to my 1440p screen at home.

I had to upgrade my 2nd monitor to a 4k one :(

Viewing my work on the 5K screen on the left and switching to my other items on the right monitor (1080p) was messing with my eyes.

same - i stopped using my ancient ipad 3 bc i looked at one comic on a 12.9

seems insane to read comics on that small ass screen now

what will you read first? i'm going to work through Aaron's Thor run

That's a damn good pick.

If I had to choose first I'd probably go with Slott's Silver Surfer stuff that came out recently. I dig Allred's art on there.

What monitor do you have at home? I use the 27" 5k imac at work (beautiful display for sure) and have a 27" 1440p IPS display at home, still looks good to me. No doubt the imac is better for colors etc though.

I was being obtuse on purpose for the sake of praising the screen. Of course not every screen is ruined for me ;)

8th gen intel could resurrect decent performance Mac mini while keeping the unnecessarily compact form factor. Not convinced it'll happen but would be nice to see. Just a slab of aluminium with 2 usb c ports and nothing else
