The issue I'm having is that I think HRT is making my mental health deteriorate even worse than before. Physically, I like the changes, but mentally and emotionally I feel worse than ever.

But why do you think HRT is causing that in you? If you're liking the physical changes, then HRT should be having a positive effect on you by itself. There has to be more to it that's causing those problems mentally and emotionally

Let me guess, you are self medicating ?

Because that sounds like you are "pregnant" =P
Crying ridiculously easy (being overly emotional) means that either your body is adjusting to the meds (will reduce greatly after a small time) or that you are overdosing

Got my blood tests back and my Estradiol is finally at the right level after 5 months of trial and error. Injections truly are the best <3

I was kinda freaking out a bit the past couple weeks because I felt like my sex drive was returning and I had a bit of an acne flare-up, which I assumed meant my T was increasing, but turns out I was just being paranoid lol.

But why do you think HRT is causing that in you? If you're liking the physical changes, then HRT should be having a positive effect on you by itself. There has to be more to it that's causing those problems mentally and emotionally

IDK, I just feel like I was coping better with things back before starting HRT. I was still really miserable but I felt more functioning, like I was able to "deal with it" better.

That's a good point from Platy. What dosages are you on, and are you getting regular blood tests?

prescription meds
12.5 mg Cypro daily
2.5 mg Finasteride daily
10 mg injectable estradiol weekly

otc vitamins
2,500 mcg Vitamin B12 daily
5,000 mcg Biotin daily
General purpose multi-vitamin

I just had blood work yesterday
My E was 319 pg/mL
My T was 28 ng/dL

Yeah, those levels seem fine and you're not taking a crazy amount of anything. You probably should talk to your doctor about this just to be safe like Platy says. There are a few other things that they tend to monitor as well. I can offer advice, but I'm not a professional.

Don't worry about your sex drive returning or anything like that. I can get how that might make you think that, but some women have high sex drives and plenty of women get acne. Neither of those things are exclusive to men, so try not to focus on those as being a sign of that.

I don't think I knew you before you started HRT, but when you were struggling to get your levels just right you were not coping with things well at all. You've only just now managed to get your levels into the proper range, so I don't really feel that you're in a position to really be saying that you had a better handle on everything before-hand. You should really try to pinpoint what's making you feel this way before you make any drastic decisions like detransitioning. We're here to help you figure it out and so is your doctor! But you have to have patience!

6 months HRT. Half a year now. Haven't noticed any physical changes since month 1.

Mentally still worse than ever. Went to a wedding last night, huge mistake. Most dysphoria I have felt in a long time. Graduate college on Saturday. Not excited about it, only remorseful. Don't even want to go to commencement, but it's important to my parents.

There's more I'd like to share but Era isn't a safe place for me anymore after what happened last time, so I'll refrain.

Send me a pm if you need to talk privately. You're always welcome to rejoin the discord as well! We'll help however we can!

And while you are technically 6 months in, you just sorted out your levels recently. You'll have to be patient, as frustrating as it is.

I'm not trans but I just wanted to say that I have so much respect for you folks for pursuing your true selves no matter what society may think. If I were in your shoes I'm not sure I would have the inner strength to push past such enormous ignorance and discrimination. You are an inspiration.

My doctor called me yesterday morning to talk to me about bottom surgery. I'm officially starting the process of getting that done. So, you know, a few months getting letters. a year convincing my insurance I'm serious.

Sephora has started offering makeup classes for Trans and non-binary folks for free.

I have my appointment for June 10th. Should be fun.
That's awesome! I wish we had Sephora in the UK.
Getting one-on-one time with a MUA is invaluable. I'm thinking of taking a class at MAC, but it's £50 per 90 min session. It's redeemable against product but still expensive.

In hindsight it may have been a mistake to start HRT before actually accepting myself.

I don't know if it was necessarily a mistake, but we're here to help you figure it out! Feel free to share what you're going through! We're not going to judge, we're just here to help!

Welcome to the thread Scarlet! It sucks just how long absolutely everything takes with insurance, but I'm rooting for you! Hopefully you'll get lucky and it won't take nearly that long!

Welcome to the thread Dock!

That seems like a pretty good deal, and having someone help you in-person would definitely be a huge boost! But, if its too expensive there are a LOT of online tutorials for teaching women how to use makeup that you can take your time with as well! I can dig some up for you if you'd like

Nice to meet you! :) I'm Robin, 28 year old transgirl extraordinaire. 2 1/2 years HRT more or less.

I haven't posted in this thread in awhile but I hope everyone is doing well! or at least hanging in there! I'm feeling more and more like I want to get orchie done but I'm not really sure what I have to do / who I have to call to start working towards it. Do y'all think it would be dumb to just call the number on my insurance card?

So, I was gonna get an orchi. And then I had my consultation and he was like, "you know you don't have to get an orchi to get bottom surgery."

So I was like. Bye felicia, and then started the referral process for bottom surgery. Yee

Hi all, I put my foot in my mouth in another thread because I misunderstood the practice of deadnaming and thought I saw an example of it where there was not. I'd appreciate if anyone can PM or link me to some good reading or conversations about it so I can improve my understanding of the issue and hopefully not cause further offense. Thank you.

I think this really just goes through all of the basics of what it is and how it can affect us. It's not really the same as a nickname, or a villain name to try and sound cooler, its about managing to have a name that actually represents who you are, and wanting people to respect that.

There was some discussion on it in this thread if you'd like to read about it some : https://www.resetera.com/threads/transgender-101.25656/

Nice to meet you! I don't think I've ever actually introduced myself in this thread yet. I'm Katherine, 25-year old transwoman and on HRT for close to 4 years now. Fun fact, my name on here is actually just the Kat from Katherine and my initials. I don't actually like Kit Kats all that much!

Simply put I feel worse than I ever have before. Whether that's because of HRT, other personal issues, or a mixture of both, I don't know.

But at the same time, I was going to kill myself anyways before starting back in November, so stopping would just be putting me back in that same situation.

Either way I've given up on everything. It's been two weeks since graduation and I have done nothing but lay in bed for that time. I don't even bother to respond to calls or texts from family and friends anymore. I'm just done with everything. I never wanted this and it's not something I will ever accept. I have enough cash savings to survive like this for at least a couple years, which is much longer than I see myself actually living.

Hi TransEra, I have a couple of questions, though I'm not sure if I want to ask them publicly. If ya'll think it would be best if I posted them in this topic that's fine too though. Also I guess I'll just say that they're sort of mental health related if any of you think you can help with that.

Hello, don't believe I posted here before so I figured I would say "Hi" introduce myself before asking my question. I'm 22 and AMAB, and have always known I'm trans, figured out what gender dysphoria and being trans was at 11. After a brief stint of DIY-ing when I was 19, I stopped so I could have biological children in the future. Anyway, the wait has not been fun and I am looking into ways to where I can manage my dysphoria until when/if I can transition.

Here's my question: does anyone have any experience with low-dose HRT?

I was on low dose HRT for about 4 months, not out of choice but because my doctor was incompetent.

I'm not sure if you're amab or afab, but if it's the former and your main concern is hiding the changes from other people then you really don't have anything to worry about. You can go years without anyone noticing even at a full dose. If you're afab then you might have a more difficult time as the changes from T (voice dropping, facial hair) are a lot more noticeable.

I would imagine fertility would be impacted somewhat either way though, so if that's the primary issue you may be out of luck sadly.

With regards to mental changes, HRT (both low and high dose) has made my mental health much worse overall, but I am definitely an outlier in this regard. Most people seem to report improvements in mental health rather than deterioration.

Thank you for the response, I'm sorry that your doctor was incompetent. I am indeed AMAB. I'm not too worried about the physical changes being noticeable as much as I am about the infertility. I believe when I was DIYing that enjoyed any "mental changes" that happened, so you might be an outlier and I'm sorry to hear that.

Have you considered banking sperm? Its pricey but if you can get a hold of some financing it shouldn't be too bad. If you're still in school you could maybe see about taking out an extra grand or two in student loans and that should cover it.

I made a lot of progress lately.
Started presenting as female at my trade school (which basically means anywhere but my home town), which worked out fairly well so far.
Additonally I might be able to start HRT soon, but now I need to start looking into banking sperm.

On the other hand, I need to get a lot better at make up, since I'm not passing at all right now.
I still need to start laser hair removal as well.

If you live anywhere near a major metro make sure you check Groupon. You can get some incredible deals on Laser.

While this a good idea, do research into any place that you see on Groupon. A lot of the really cheap "Laser" places actually do something called IPL which is nowhere near as effective and will take a lot of time to take effect and for some people (like myself) be actually completely ineffective.

Is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for when going for laser? Are the good ones just called 'Laser' or is there some more specific term?

There's not really a specific term for it, but I found in my area at least that all the places that used IPL claimed to do "Laser hair removal" which isn't strictly true. So I found I was having to research what machine they used to perform it before going ahead.

I ended up backing out of my appointment with a local place because their Groupon was intentionally misleading, in the sense that they listed what was considered a "Small/Medium/Large" area but did not list what was NOT covered under any of those areas.

Like the neck, for example.

Banking sperm is something I am wanting to do in the future. I do not feel comfortable taking out student loans to do it just right now. Thank you for the suggestion =)

Got my dose upped and added progesterone. My T levels are dropping quickly, but my E levels are still at pre-HRT levels (albeit at the high end). It's been a little over 3 months, hopefully the new doses will make it go faster. Don't even have a hint of physical changes at the moment.

What is your dosages at now? No physical changes is a little odd at 3 months. Surely sex drive must have plummeted?

They do have great makeup. My SO loves their urban decay brand.

HRT effects everyone differently and is very ymmv. Outside of the immediate changes I noticed within the first few weeks (breast buds, changing body odor, less oily skin/hair) I haven't noticed anything additional 7 months in.

At the end of the day all you can do is make sure your levels are in the correct range ( T less than 50 ng/dL and E greater than 200 pg/mL) and hope for the best.

This has truly been an incredible waste of time. I was certain it would be from the very start, so at least I am validated in that regard. People can tell me I'm giving up too soon, but they're wrong. I already know the truth, and I'm not going to keep placing the carrot on the stick (one more year on HRT! one more surgery!) when it's painfully obvious how futile it all is, and that I'm only prolonging my own suffering.

All that's really left do is find a younger trans person to give my savings to, and find a closet big enough to hang myself in, now that would be some great irony for sure.
