I really really loved this, wow. I wasn't expecting that.

I don't know where I'd rank it among the other Star Wars films, but it was just a lot of fun. I even liked Alden's take on Solo.

I just hope more people give this a chance, our theater was practically empty. :(

As someone who really likes reading the books and comics, this talk of 'need' is something that doesn't apply to me at all. I just like seeing or reading more about these characters but need doesn't enter the equation.

Indeed! For those of us who read the books and/or comics, we're used to these one-off (hopefully a sequel!) stories. It's part of the fun. This is new territory for a Star Wars audience that basically just watches the films.

That's a good way to phrase it. I think I came off a little too harsh in attacking people who say "need" but you essentially captured my thoughts. I just enjoyed getting more Star Wars with this latest film, so I was happy. The concept of "need" didn't apply.

I really really will never understand this it's a story that didn't need to be told argument. Nothing needs to be told, this is for entertainment. We are going to get a new Star Wars movie every year, they aren't limited slots for stories, it's not like this robbed us of some potential new series, that's coming. You know why it got made, cause it's more Star Wars, and if you are a fan that is a good thing. Back in the 90s I was scavenging for SW content, reading every damn novel, playing every game, I would kill for a new movie. Give me more Star Wars forever, I love this, if you are a fan why wouldn't you?

The movie was really good, all these Disney movies have been. Not everything has to be an all time classic.

You are correct!

Sadly, there's a core fan base that is so jaded and negative. My uncle says TLJ ruined his childhood! He won't go to Solo because he doesn't think the guy playing Han will be good. Because the Millennium Falcon has changes in it not true to Star Wars. It's so petty and ridiculous. It's fiction and entertainment! Why are people taking it so seriously!!!

I had so much fun watching this movie. I know the filming style ended up being more close up to the characters than originally planned but it helped give the film it's own unique look and feel. I thought it felt like a smaller, self contained story. Almost like a wonderful novel that doesn't take long to read. The actors all put in killer performances, the set designs and costumes were wonderful, I enjoyed the score a great deal, and I was just able to relax and enjoy Star Wars.

Assuming that they can pull off these smaller scale films with the right director the first time around and spend less money, I say bring on more small films like this, with brand new characters.

It's weird. I have issues with TLJ, you can get me going on that if anyone starts a debate but I still can see there is a really good movie in there. I have a friend who goes to those extremes you speak of. I can be discussing TLJ with him, we can agree on issues we had but then he will go "man that was total trash! The series is ruined!". I just look at him like, what are you talking about. I don't get that extreme jump in opinion, where is the middle ground. Some people are like that, it's the best thing or the worst thing ever.

I'm always okay with people having way different feelings regarding the films, but this definitely describes how I've been feeling. The Disney era Star Wars movies have all succeeded as far as I'm concerned, with what I found to be four good to great Star Wars movies in a row so far. So to me there has never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan, and I can't even imagine another drought at this point. I want so much more movies like this, and entirely different ones, it's all exciting to me.

Massive Star Wars fan turned off by Last Jedi and haven't followed this at all but got the chance to see it for free today and it was better than I expected, pretty good actually. Maul was a huge surprise, lots of gasps and chatter when he appeared.

I thought Alden did really well. My confidence in him grew as they showed more clips before release and he actually exceeded my expectations. He's not Ford, he was never going to be. But he added his own personality to the role without trying to copy Ford.

OK so here are some more lengthy (yet fairly scrambled) impressions.. I'm still digesting what I saw last night. Keep in mind, this is all subject to change as my opinions of SW movies swing wildly and my initial impressions are always the worst.

Overall I didn't like it. I don't hate it or think it's bad, but thought it was quite flat and lacked emotional resonance. Which is too bad, because at times, it was charming, human and very funny. It could have legitimately been a great SW movie, and Alden was the best part about it. I was wrong about him, and I think most people were too.

Let's get the bad out of the way first:
  • The movie felt flat and generally not very engaging. I thought the introduction to Qi'ra/Han's relationship felt forced; when they got separated I didn't really care that much and I feel like I really should have. It would have made their reuniting/relationship in the later part of the movie more emotionally gripping.
  • Lacked an emotional core. I think three or four people died in this movie and I didn't really feel much for any of them or for the characters who had to deal with their passing (though Glover's scene was very good, the sudden shift in tone felt out of place). It was still a step up from R1, no doubt, but I just wasn't invested most of the time.
  • Action was frequently dull. Maybe part of this was because I sat off to the side and didn't have a very good seat, but I was expecting the falcon stuff to be some of the best action pieces in the movie and it just.. wasn't there. The big squid thing.. I just wasn't into it. Though the speed boost sequence was great. TFA/TLJ did a far better job with the falcon, without question. The train car stuff was actually pretty unique and interesting, but most of the set pieces just didn't do anything for me. There were a few standout moments that made me smile, but was expecting more.
  • Callbacks.. this is the first time I've felt like they were just too obvious and excessive. They easily could have done almost all of the ones they did and implemented them more subtly, instead of hitting the audience over the head. Some were a lot of fun and excellent, but many were not.
  • Visually, much of the movie was bland. Wayyy too much cloudy grey/brown. I wanted a more vibrant, lively looking setting. Yes, you can still accomplish that and include the tone/atmosphere they were shooting for. Some excellent shots and use of color, but most of the time just looked very washed out.
  • Some bad/unfunny jokes that should have been scrapped ("my thumbs are sore" was a low point.. felt out of character). The whole Chewie meeting fight was kinda weird and off for me. Han speaking like a Wookie was.. strange, lol.
  • The cameo was.. cool but confusing and seemed to come out of nowhere. Maybe this will become clearer when I watch again.
  • The middle section really sagged for me. I felt like there was just nothing interesting happening for a good half hour or so.
  • Wasn't super impressed with much of Chewie/Han's interactions and thought this would be the best part of the movie. They had some really great moments but overall thought the Kasdans would write a lot more for them.
  • Solo's name. Just.. that was disappointing to me. Some random ass Imperial officer gives him his name? Eh.. there are a million better ways to do it.
  • Directly copying Han/Leia's kiss in the falcon was terrible and felt really lazy to me (and even being interrupted). Which is a shame because I enjoyed a lot of their more subtle interactions.
  • In comparison to R1, this movie felt incredibly tiny and contained. World building was pretty good, but I would have liked to see more populated areas.
  • Some of the twists felt contrived and unnecessary.
  • Alden's delivery of "I have a really good feeling about this" is still bad (ironically), IMO. One of the few moments he felt out of place to me.
Now the good:
  • Alden. He is his own Han Solo and he won me over by the end. I wouldn't mind seeing him reprise in a better movie. I was wrong.
  • Clarke was great and people should be ashamed of trashing her for no reason. She had great chemistry with Ehrenreich, even if their introduction was rocky.
  • Some excellent scenes with Han/Qi'Ra paired with a great score.
  • Some really fun interactions between Han/Lando/Chewie.
  • Lando. Glover did a great job with him and made him his own, as Alden did with Han.
  • The score was better than I thought it would be. I thought it was actually quite good even if subtle.
  • Some fantastic shots with the falcon and cool sequences on the train.
  • Alden just had great delivery most of the time. Some classic Han lines/moments.
  • Beckett was fun.
These are just random thoughts with no real train of thought (left a lot out) still and I'll be able to better collect them after I see the movie again. Overall, I'd give it about a 6/10, a little worse than R1. For reference, I'd give TFA/TLJ about 8/10. It's passable but could have been much, much better.

All things considered though.. it's amazing this movie isn't a disaster. Howard worked magic to get it functional.

Maul
showed up at the end.

Solid movie which was a lot better than it probably has any right to be

Has Chewie been eating people that the Stormtroopers have been feeding to him before Han ran into him?

That's something I just couldn't shake from my mind watching that scene.

It was alright. I didn't think Alden did a very good job honestly. Like Rogue One, I felt this had tone problems and it's made worse this time because it's a lot less justifiable. Glover nailed Lando, though.

I'm probably more critical than I'd usually be because Han is my favorite character, but man this could have been much better. A lot of wasted potential.

Maul's appearance was a highlight for me, but only if they do something with him later on. He deserves a big screen rematch and I don't care if that means tripping over the canon.

Ranking:
ANH
ESB
TFA
TLJ
ROTJ
RO
SOLO
ROTS
AOTC
TPM

I wish Disney would have kept the "faster and more intense" feeling to the dialogue in a lot of these movies, especially the legacy characters. TFA got closest.

I don't understand this. Is it so hard to understand that people get invested in fiction?
No. It's not hard to understand. I've been invested in fiction as a reader and, for a few years in the past, as a writer of it. I understand the investment (writing it is definitely more of an investment though). I'm talking about to the point that people start acting like what they view and watch is so real they get upset with the fiction if it doesn't go their way or how they envision it. Rather than appreciating it for what it is and what those who created it were aiming to accomplish. It's almost like getting into an argument with another human being and it becomes so big you never speak to the person again.

So no mention of Chewbacca's life debt in this movie. Is that something that doesn't fly this day in age?

I don't mind that they changed that. The idea that Chewie follows Han out of love and loyalty is better than the idea that he's tied to Han out of some cultural obligation. Leave the life debt stuff to Jar Jar.

I totally bought him as Han Solo and thought he was really Ford-like.
He was passable as the same character, especially given that he was in a different place here than he was in ANH, but I don't think he was really Ford-like at all.

There were a handful of mannerisms of Ford they seemed to capture, but if Alden works at all as Han (which I thought he was fine) it's not due to him being Ford-like.

Can't read all the posts, but was one of the Marauders also one of Saw Guerras men in Rogue One? The guy with a scaly head and a breathing mask thing?

Enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. Can't believe this was ever gonna be a slapstick comedy though, I REALLY want to know what the film was originally like.

I disagree, but people seem to be split on this. I'm just happy that the general consensus is that the performance was good.

Seems pretty un-Chewie to me.

Especially after the Porg scene in TLJ.
It's unpleasant but it's probably all that Chewie had to eat and them being Imperials would have made it easier.

yeah i caught that, you mean at the end right? I saw one of the "Two-Tubes" brothers. one of these guys:

As much as i hate to say this but people shouldn't attempt SW without GL. All these new movies just feel like fan pictures.
I don't mean to pick up on this post in particular again but I just wanna remind people that the Han Solo backstory that George Lucas had planned was to have him be raised on Kashyyyk by Chewbacca during the Clone Wars and also helping Yoda.

Clearly he eats meat, I just think that one portrays him as a "savage" eating anything they throw at him when I've seen Chewie as more of a gentle giant, most Wookies in general for that matter. That's not to say that Chewie wouldn't wreck some Imperial troopers when given the chance, but to suggest that he's been eating them seems a bit weird to me, to say the least.

Ha, almost my exact thoughts as well, but I came out liking it overall. Don't agree with the problems with the jokes, they were all good and not a lot of them. But the middle part was lagging, making me worried. It fails to carry you through some parts and suffers from a lack of action and emotional investment, but I think that was just me as I was overthinking it too much. Not that it doesn't have flaws, but there parts where I was just destroying my enjoyment of the film because I was even thinking how others would react to it.

No problems with the acting whatsoever. Glover was a bit choppy in some parts, but overall, the Alden, Emilia, Harrelson, and Glover are in large part responsible for saving the movie. Loved the music too, and hearing the soundtrack by itself confirms it's probably better than Rogue One's.

I need to see it again to make a definitive opinion about it. But I'm surprised some people are loving it as much haha.

It doesn't seem he had much of a choice. If you are chained up and the only food you get is human meat you are going to eat human before dying.
