*sigh*
at least he didn't go with the usual defense
"I was recently notified by Major League Baseball that I had tested positive for EPO, a substance that is prohibited under MLB's Joint Drug Agreement," Castillo said in a statement through the MLB Players Association.

"The positive test resulted from an extremely poor decision that I, and I alone, made. I take full responsibility for my conduct. I have let many people down, including my family, my teammates, the White Sox organization and its fans, and from my heart, I apologize. Following my suspension, I look forward to rejoining my teammates and doing whatever I can to help the White Sox win."

the kicker
"2017 study showed that the effects of EPO administered to amateur cyclists was not distinguishable from a placebo.[32]"

still a shame though as I was hoping he would be a decent trade chip for the white sox.

Why is this thread still in etcera and not hangouts?

Nice win from the Astros. Bottom of the lineup coming through again. Altuve and Correa combine for 1/10 and they score 8? Sign me up for that.

Another random dbacks suck stat for you guys/gals....

The Arizona Diamondbacks had a franchise low of only 10 hits in a 3 game series with the Brewers this past week.

The team as a whole right now is batting .213

They are on the cusp of being on the wrong side of records.

Holy shit. Has he been bad this year?

Wow totally out of left field. Did not expect this.

He started out red hot, but he has been slumping for all of May.

This seems to have more to do with money.

I'm worried about what this does to the team chemistry, I thought he has been a great teammate all year.

Yeah, its a money move. They dont want that 22m dollar option to vest.

He can still hit, its just his May was a giant slump.

Such a weird move, you've already invested millions upon millions in money into the guy just let him try and hit his way out of it. It's not like you're going to recoup any of that value now whether the option vests or not.

At some point, freeing up the slot is worth a lot more than beating a dead horse. Sink dem costs. Also, no one is going to want to let an option vest when you're going to throw another 22.5 million down the drain.

DFAing Ramirez just cause of a classic Hanley cold spell instead of Nunez who looks like an average Little leaguer playing 2nd is a WTF move.

Dombrowski does dumb tings

this move was because 1) they dont want to let his 22m option vest for next year because they want to be rid of him 2) need a roster spot for pedroia 3) he's not hitting and doesn't play defense worth a damn, might as well just give those ABs to Mitch Moreland

We have JBJ, Swihart, Nunez, and Vasquez all doing just about nothing

Moreland isn't an everyday player.

Defensively at first, he is pretty serviceable.

The only one of these arguments that's unique to HanRam is the vesting option...there's several worthy candidates who haven't been hitting and aren't much better defensively

This is my concern. He was such a good clubhouse guy on what I consider to be a very likeable 2018 Red Sox team.

You guys need to play some Out of the Park Baseball, the move makes total sense. Dropping 22 million on a 34 year old sub 100 OPS+ guy is throwing money out the window. He's not even really slumping, he's barely below his last year's numbers.

Wow terrible move dfaing Ramirez. Yea he's in a slump but big deal, everyone goes through that. They couldn't make room for Pedroia any other way?? I'm sure the Mets will grab him.

Wow I did a double take when I saw Hanley was DFA. Came out of nowhere for me' maybe I haven't been paying attention. I know they don't want him to vest but I think he was pretty popular in the clubhouse. Curious to see how this plays out.

He started off super hot, his recent numbers are what I would consider slumping.

A 34 year old who is in a steady decline is not worth another 22.5 million. Dude is way below average, and he's doing it at the least defensively valuable slot in the game. Even if he were mashing, I would still expect a DFA. You don't pay 22.5 million for a guy who is probably going to cost you an extra game a year, when putting in some random would probably make more economic sense.

Problem is, what do you do if he starts getting hot again? Give him more at bats?

Nah. You do it here while he is down.

Hanley has been sub-replacement level for 2 years. What year are y'all living in where Hanley is worth keeping around? Zero is higher than a negative.

Addition by subtraction for the rays honestly. Colome has been trash for years now, hard to believe they got back anything for him

hanley was below replacement level in 2015, 2017, and so far in 2018. he is a bad player and has no real value to a roster.
