Ok, so I sat down to play the game and it immediately hits me with all sorts of end user agreements and other legal papers. I don't live with my lawyer, so it will take at least a few days to read through all of this stuff carefully before I start the game. I know this sounds silly, but I've always been told to carefully read through anything before agreeing to it.

That sad feeling when you go to get the drop on the asylum demon and you forget to hit the button.....pretty sure I heard the demon laugh.

Still killed his ass though. Gotta say I love the atmosphere a ton.

What does poise stat do? Also, how do you backstab properly? I tried to backstab that first dark knight or whatever down the stairs in the first area. Got right behind him, tapped R1, normal swing. Proceeded to get murdered by him about 4 times in a row.

Also, 4-way rolling can just go straight to hell.

Don't lock on to enemies to backstab if that is what you are doing

Uuuuuugh, I beat the Taurus Demon and then the dragon killed me on the bridge. I could have sworn it starts spitting fire ahead of you so that it doesn't hit you unless you walk into it. Annoying. I hadn't leveled up yet and had about 9,000 souls, I was impatient to get back to the bridge and stupidly got killed by undead on the way back. That pissed me off enough to make me take a break. Have to take it easy for awhile, I was expecting it to feel like a cakewalk but after not playing it for a few years it's keeping me on my toes more than I expected.

I will say I'm finding parrying way, way easier than I ever have before. I'm not sure if it's the frame rate making the controls feel more responsive or if playing a ton of Bloodborne made me more confident, but I barely ever bothered with parrying in the past because I sucked at it and now I'm parrying everyone at will.

Did they change the way backstabs work? Or am I forgetting something and you can only backstab with certain weapons? I started as a Pyromancer and I haven't been able backstab at all with the handaxe, it used to be super easy to backstab undead after the whiffed an attack but for some reason I just can't do it. Starting with Fireball feels borderline like cheating. It's not too hard to catch multiple enemies with it, and so far it did a ton of damage to the Asylum and Taurus demons.

I guess it's better to be safe than sorry, and reading through everything is certainly more responsible than blindly agreeing to something, but what's the worst deal you can imagine being asked to agree to in the user agreement? What would be in there that would stop you from playing the game?

after playing DS2 and DS3 and coming back to DS1 it takes some time getting used to things- having to buy the Bottomless Box to store your extra inventory, buying the weapon/armor repair tool (instead of having it automatically repaired at every bonfire), sliding down ladders using a double tap of the dash key instead of holding it, backstabs need to be timed a bit different etc

I'm sorry but this is hilarious. Reminds me of that South Park episode.

Thanks! I couldn't figure out how to slide, I had almost convinced myself you never could and I was confusing DS1 with the later games.

And apparently you can't backstab if you're locked on? Was that always a thing?

Poise makes you not stagger. It's very powerful.

Most common reason a backstab doesn't work is that your shield is up. You cannot backstab while you are blocking.

Well I think I can confirm weapon based matchmaking is not a thing. I'm currently one shoting people for 600+ damage in the Undead Parish with my Chaos Zweihander+5 at SL13

You can be locked on, it just might make it harder to position. You just need to be in a neutral position and your shield can't be up

Hmmm I was not getting any Gargoyle summons at all earlier I was waiting well over 20 minutes and nothing. I was SL15 using a +13 Washing Pole so I was thinking they did put that in. Who knows...

Then maybe you should stop doing that. :P

For those who do this... How is this fun? Serious question. I don't get it. I once invaded with my SL1 character (I was in NG+, hosts were in NG), with a maxed out pyro flame, maxed out lightning hand axe, and maxed out crimson robes. Hosts could barely scratch me, and I could easily one- or two-shot them. After doing that 2-3 times, I felt bad, and swapped my axe for a +0 one. Still, my upgraded armour felt way OP, they did chip damage on me and even with phantoms it was too easy and got boring super fast.

I will never, ever understanding Dickwraithing, and I'm glad the later games tried to prevent this (it was clearly not intended gameplay behaviour from the devs). Soul memory wasn't a great solution, but I understand why they did it, and fortunately they got it mostly right in DS3 with the weapon restrictions and removing upgradable armour.

Oh by the way, regarding the backdoor way into Blighttown (from the valley): the three big ogres in the tunnel are the ones that have a 2% chance to drop a Large Club, right? Really wanna give that weapon a try and while running to them from Firelink shrine takes a minute or two, it's a super safe route, so it could be pretty stress-free farming. Might listen to a podcast while doing it or something lol.

Correct. You can also use humanity to increase your item discovery. Good luck...

You need to be completely still when you press attack. You can't be holding forward and attacking, you need to completely stop and hit attack behind an enemy.

??? That was never a thing.

Huh, I'm realizing now it must've been something DSFix or some PC mod added.

I've actually never done this before and this was the perfect opportunity to try it when the game is still fresh. I don't feel bad though, I've spanwed into gangbangs that were already encircled on my spawn point and slaughtered them in all in one swing. I like to think of it as an equalizer.

If you use your twink character(s) to counter gankers that's one thing. But how does this equalize anything if you just one-shot new players? If anything, you'll actually create more gankers that way. :P

I never understood that either. I will happily do low level co-op with a super overpowered weapon but I would never invade low level folks with it. Oh well different strokes I guess...

Is there a level limitation for playing with others? I think in the original you could play with others within 10 levels of each other?

I think I remember someone telling me I wasn't being honorable or courteous or whatever when I didn't bow to my invader, and better yet, attacked them when they did

Like fuck that

This asshole invaded me, of course I'm gonna do everything in my power to kill him, including attacking him when he's bowing for whatever reason

Replaying this game again makes me realize how truly amazing it is, simply one of the greatest games of all time.

60fps with this IQ is also top notch, game holds pretty well too!

So, I just realized while playing that they took out the little subtitles of each area, you know like "Anor Londo, City of the Gods." I always liked that about DS1.

I've seen this been talked about here and there and i dont understand? Those subtitles were never in those introduction texts when entering new areas. Just look up any dks 1 video where they enter a new place.

Best buy claims package was delivered via UPS at 4:15 pm to front door. No package at front door to be found. No Dark Souls weekend ;(

Should I try be human as often as possible or for does that mechanic work?
Being human means you can summon phantoms to help you out. However, that also means that you're susceptible to invaders that use red orbs, as well as the few NPC invaders the game has. Other than that, holding onto liquid humanity while hollow gives you the same bonuses as you would have if you were human, so don't feel like you absolutely have to be human at all times.
