I've seen this been talked about here and there and i dont understand? Those subtitles were never in those introduction texts when entering new areas. Just look up any dks 1 video where they enter a new place.

It's been years but...is the text possibly only on your first arrival to the area in DS1 and going forward only the sound effect thing?

I don't remember this accurately so I probably shouldn't be commenting on it :/

Having a Lightning Spear duel with a Prowling Demon is fun enough, but getting a Titanite Catch Pole on my first one is some supremely good luck, given how god awful the drop rate is on it.

I had one drop on my very first Demon kill and didn't know until like a year later when speaking to a friend who was also obsessed with the game that it's quite fucking rare apparently.

Never got it again!

What does poise stat do? Also, how do you backstab properly? I tried to backstab that first dark knight or whatever down the stairs in the first area. Got right behind him, tapped R1, normal swing. Proceeded to get murdered by him about 4 times in a row.

Also, 4-way rolling can just go straight to hell.
Don't lock on to enemies to backstab if that is what you are doing

You should be able to lock on. Idk how else you'd circle strafe otherwise.

The tough bit is feeling out where their back actually is. They'll do animations but as far as I know the back doesn't actually move. And given how the camera is angled it doesn't always look like you feel like it should been. Practice on hollows to get a feel for the "sweet spot."

Yay I finally managed to get The Great Scythe - but god what a disappointment... it's only marginally better than my starting axe. God this game really doesn't have a win button does it.

I had forgotten the capra demon fight takes place in a shoe closet. I feel bad for the phantoms I'm summoning to help, since I'm getting smoked instantly.

Should I try be human as often as possible or for does that mechanic work?

You should if you want NPC invasions. Once you beat an area boss, the NPC will no longer invade. You must do it before. If you forget there is always NG+. Unlike Demon's Souls they're... Not that dangerous. Don't be afraid to take them on.

If you want to know the locations I can give you names. If you don't want spoilers, just know it's worth going through every area as a human before defeating the boss and you'll be sure to pick them up.

The ones I remember off hand are: Depths, Ruins, Izalith, Blighttown, and near the end of Tomb of The Giants. There might be some more I'm forgetting.

Each NPC phantom has a place in it's given location in that will trigger the invasion.

Why should you do this? Rewards. Unlike player phantoms, NPC phantoms drop unique loot. One phantom invades in three locations, and you get special loot for each time. I've been saying for years that FROM need to have a system to drop loot of real invaders too but alas they haven't listened to me yet lol.

Dodge. Immediately. Keep rolling until you get to a good spot. The boss is a skill check. Also get he dogs first. The boss is actually fairly slow.

It's also the fight I realized that if I dodge forward then I complete avoid leaping attacks from enemies pretty much.

Do you play with a shield? Block. Slice. Then just block and sidestep until dead. The camera will clip through the walls.
I cold see how it would be worse for a caster though.

The text and sounds still happen. But there's a PC mod that adds additional subtitles to the name of the place like instead of just "Anor Londo", it would say "Anor Londo, City of the gods".

So it was a mod he was originally thinking of

Oh! I never even knew that actually. Thanks for clearing that up since I thought the entire shebang was gone.

Surprised there's been no invaders yet... Does the password stop them? Pretty sure it didn't in the other games.

The camera takes a dump when I zone it, maybe because I'm trying to lock on when I zone in.

If only I could send my summoned phantoms in first...

Played it for an hour and liked it quite a bit. Parry is very easy to pull off in this game.

Nice, just got an email saying the strategy guide is delayed.

Absolutely love the fact that this company cant even get a strategy guide out on time for a low-effort remaster of a 7 year old game

Not having the improved rolling from DS3 is killing me here. That particular system feels pretty dated. That said, I'm having a fun time with my first (kind of) go at dark souls 1.

When you zone in:

1) Don't panic. Do not lock on. Let him come to you.
2) He will jump at you with both Machete's. When he starts to jump roll past him towards the right and while he recovers run past the dogs and up the stairs.
3) The dogs will follow up the stairs and you should be able to dispatch them pretty easily on the stairs
3a) If you don't kill them both drop off the ledge and kill the other them when they drop off.
4) Now it's just you and Cappy, if you don't feel comfortable fighting him on the ground run up the stairs onto the nook in the corner and drop off when he gets close then hit him a couple times when he drops down.
4a) Run back up the stairs and repeat

I thought it was shit as well at first, especially when first using its moveset. Once you upgrade it a bit and utilize the moveset properly, it's one of the best weapons you can use.

Is there something weird going on with lock on in the remaster? Strafing/rolling feels off somehow. Like it hits a wall if you go too far to one side of the enemy you're locked onto. I've had rolls lose all momentum mid roll because i go to far to the right or left. Was it that way in the original too; because i genuinely don't remember that.

Well, hit the jackpot and got the Black Knight sword from the Undead Burg Black Knight and the Black Knight Shield from the one near the Undead Parish. Been coasting through the game with it and just beat Sen's Fortress with the sword at +3.

Meh. Capra is an asshole and doesn't deserve these polite strategies. Just throw firebombs at him from upstairs.

Also having a tough time parrying...what's the timing on that?

I +5 the battle axe and I DESTROYED the

1st Bell Gargoyle in seconds. The 2nd one could not even join the battle before his comrade perished, I was like "HOLY FUCK!". My jaw dropped over that.

I would also feel very shitty to cheese Havel the Rock but he's a fucking bully who can tank hits and can 2 shot you, maybe even 1 shot in a given scenario so fuck him. I took him to the entrance where you kill the one undead who throws the flaming barrel at you, it completely diminishes Havel's move and if you play conservative and get 1 R2 shot in, I did 40 someodd damage and overtime I took him down. Zero fucks given, he deserves the cheese. He was neutralized by the narrow hallway and I just got 1 shot in and backed away.

Havel's Ring is so, so, so, so GOOD. Especially with Knight Armor. No more fat rolls! Yes!

Generally speaking weapons aren't a lot "better" than other weapons -- almost anything is viable in Dark Souls. Just pick a moveset you like.

Any good sword locations at the beginning? I'm a knight in the undead parish looking for a good sword that will last towards mid game.

- Drake Sword from the red dragon's tail
- Zweihander from the firelink graveyard
- claymore from the dragon's bridge
- long sword from undead soldiers/bought from Andre
- Broadsword from Andre
- Balder Side Sword from Balder knights
- Astora's Straight Sword from Valley of the Drakes if you have the master key
- Gravelord sword from the Catacombs if you know what you're doing

Keep in mind that in the early to mid game you're going to see more damage from blacksmith upgrades rather than dex or str scaling. So if you get a +5 weapon early by doing co-op and saving up souls, you can focus your stats on vit and endurance to make yourself comfortably ready for anything before the second bell.

Depends on what you want really. Longsword is already pretty solid. Claymore on the wyvern bridge or Zweihander in the Firelink graveyard if you want big, heavy hitting swords. If you want something that swings faster you could dip beneath Firelink and pick up the Estoc or farm for a Baldur Side Sword in the Undead Parish.

I'm assuming most people didn't pick it up on both PS4 and PC, but for those who did/those who have been following the technical previews - are there massive differences in the lighting at times, between the PC and console ports?

For instance, New Londo Ruins looks completely different on PS4, it's much, much darker. I'm not sure if this is something specific to my setup, or something within the ports themselves.

Was thinking of playing the game with a spear but ended up get the BK Halberd to drop. No other earlier weapon is easy mode. Great scythe is overrated, and takes longer to upgrade compared to the BKH.

It's been a while since I've played DS1, but I think the biggest mistake when it comes to backstabbing is forgetting to completely let go of the left thumbstick before attacking.

Do NOT get the Drake Sword. Short reason: It limits your options and makes you miss out on viable upgrade paths. Long reason: http://www.beardednerd.se/why-dark-souls-drake-sword-is-the-greatest-noob-trap-of-them-all/

As for backstabbing, there is a method to it. Sometimes it can be hard to decide exactly where the back of the enemy is. If he's in the middle of an animation, it might graphically be turned to the side but effectively the back is still opposite to where you were standing. However, most important is that A) you must not be holding your shield up, B) you must be standing still. So get in position, drop EVERYTHING for a split second, then hit R1.

Drake Sword is fine for the first two bells. New players won't have enough strength or dex to take advantage of scaling until later, let alone know where to find the materials for a +10 weapon before midgame. You'll want to get rid of it once you reach Sen's, sure, but it's still good up until that point.

False. Just don't upgrade it imo. It's not like you have to use the same weapon throughout the whole game.

Did they eliminate all depth of field? I feel like I can see the entire area in places like the place with all the ghosts. I thought previously the distance was blurred.

It is great so far but curious if I am just remembering it wrong or if that is a change.

That's the other lesson it will teach you. Learn when to not lock on.

I agree. It's a noob crutch weapon.

If someone is really, really struggling however, it can definitely give them a leg up. It was part of what kept me in the game. I think it's really on an individual basis.

I mean, magic can make the game easier than the noob sword, and that's a viable option.
