I am new to Android and bought an Honor 9 Lite to see how I got along with the OS after screwing up my iPhone 6. I've been searching for answers most of the day and... well sometimes the internet is confusing. Basically I just went to get rid of the ~20 applications I will never use.

If I root my device, will I be prevented from using the Play Store in a normal way, or other major functionality like Google Pay that might require extra authentication?

I'm not sure when this started, but on the somewhat newer versions of chrome they switched from the terrible white nav bar back to black, but now theres this white line above the nav bar. Is anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it? I've seen this on a OP 5T and a Nexus 5X.

Nah, you can still use that stuff, but there are some apps that don't work on rooted phones. I believe Netflix was like that, but I don't know if it still is.

You can't disable those apps?

Ah I didn't know about disabling apps... does that just stop them appearing in context menus and deciding to run when I'm not paying attention?

I did read about Netflix being blocked on some rooted phones but it didn't seem like a big enough deal for it to still be a prominent issue.

Disabling an app makes it so it looks like it isn't installed on the phone. To the OS, it's like they're not installed at all. The reason why you can't uninstall them is because they're installed to the system partition, which is read only to protect the OS.

As for rooting a phone and apps not running, the biggest ones are things like Android Pay, Pokemon Go and banking apps. There's a program called Magisk that restores functionality (especially to Android Pay), but it was always hit or miss for me when I had my phone rooted (I have a Note 8 now and don't root my phone anymore).

I would definitely not pick a huawei as my first android. Generally fine but plenty of little China optimizations that really mess with things including notifications and memory management

It seems my first mistake was overlooking that the Android OS could be tailored by different manufacturers.

I think that's quite enough to put me off. Disabling apps seems like a much more appropriate measure. Thanks.

I'm mixed. Doesn't look sexy but front speakers are quite a bit better than bottom
Meh, speakers are always shit. If it comes at the price of true edge-to-edge I'd rather not have the bezel and a bottom speaker.

Ideally, I'd get a phone with no front camera, no notch, smalls speakers hidden at the top and bottom. That Vivo is close (I could do without the extending camera), so hopefully that'll be a more common thing soon.

Good Google, please don't listen to reddit and keep the ffs until I get a Pixel 4 with my contract. Don't care for the notch as I see it as more usable space.

lol the small pixel 3 looks better than the XL version.

Pixel 2 XL somehow looks better than that crap.

All people are asking for the Pixel 3 is a Pixel2 with smaller bezels, wireless charging and maybe a headphone jack.

Notch doesn't bother me anymore. It basically just creates a software bezel and the extra space where the notch is is used for status bar icons. Atleast on OnePlus 6. You gain screen space and the notch doesn't cut into video or anything.

18:9 with some bezel, nothing huge, I feel is the ideal until we can get the front camera and sensors under the screen. Especially if you shave off the sides like the Sony XA series.
In the meanwhile, I love how my phone has features not advertised. I bought it like last tuesday, and never had to take a selfie at night. And then last night, went to take a selfie with some friends, pressed the photo button on my screen..and bam! Everyone is now blind. Xiaomi doesn't even mention that the Redmi 5 plus has a front flash, it was such a shock.

Not a fan of the way Google Maps continuosly polls location on the background and asks sometimes if you want to leave review or take photos of something nearby. And that happens even if you haven't touched Maps recently. Location history is already off. I guess all I can do is to just disable notifications from GM settings and explicitly disable location services unless I actually need to use Maps. It would be nice to see history of apps that are polling/requesting location information and how often.

https://m.gsmarena.com/lg_q7_stylus_to_debut_in_taiwan_soon-news-31319.php

An affordable Smartphone with a stylus isn't such a bad idea. And so far the Q7 is looking like a baller package, and it does indeed have a headphone jack for the Quad DAC. The processor is still a giant blank, but if they did go with something like a 636 or at worst a 450, I dunno if I could resist it after giving my dad the Redmi 5 Plus. LGs midrange redeemed if the SoC is on point.

Man, triggering double apps on P is so bad, and I usually enjoy working with two apps simultaneously in Oreo, so the whole P experience feels like a net negative so far. I hope they solve it in a better way before release.

I think there's a specific notifications for that stuff. I turned it off because it was asking me CONSTANTLY to review place I went to or how the trip was and stuff like that.

There was no way Google wasn't going to do the notch for the Pixel 3 XL after bending over backwards to support it in P.

The regular size Pixel 3 doesn't look too bad though.

best kind of boring though.

are you on #teamnotch now that you got the op6?
Notch is not bad with this implementation. Basically just is part of the status bar so I don't mind it. Has no affect on apps. Still unsure if will keep the op6 or pixel 2 xl though. OnePlus has a better display, but the Pixel camera is untouchable plus you get front facing speakers and day 1 updates.

Another example of the XZ2 Premium's low light capabilities, click the video to see how it performs in a pitch black (to the camera recording the scene) room:

Here's what the recording camera saw while they were taking the pic:

Here's what the XZ2 Premium saw (no flash):

So far I'm impressed with what I've seen. Still waiting for it to get into the hands of some proper reviewers.
I just bought the compact today

It is so nice having a single handed phone again. Even if it does not have a aux port, I just got so tired of phablets.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Compact, glad you like it.

I went from the Z Ultra with its 6.44" screen down to the XZ Premium with its 5.5" screen so I kinda wish I had more space. I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready for an upgrade that phones with folding displays will be a thing so I can have a smaller screen for everyday phone things and fold it open into a tablet-sized screen for web browsing and enjoying media.

EDIT.

And since you quoted that post, I'm still anxiously awaiting more hands on impressions of the XZ2 Premium. Sad that it's taking so long. I'm really hoping that with Sony having a new CEO and them recently acknowledging how slow they've been in the mobile space that they'll pump more money into mobile to get things done faster.

It's kinda concerning how Sony has been quiet about the XZ2 Premium. Well I'm sure they have a good reason

Lol. What feature is going to be new for the note 9 you think this year? 4k display? In screen fingerprint reader? There has to be something right?
Seems like all the original rumored features have been pushed out of this year... So from what I can tell it's just gonna be the s9+ with a pen lol.

There's been some voices mentioning a new UI though... Yay?

I'm gonna guess Samsung will do some gesture controls.

Oh yeah. Bixby 2.0 was confirmed!

Ah, doubt they do another new UI again when they just changed it? Gesture controls are a good guess. I realize Samsung phones are not for me, so I'm not buying another one, but I'll look out for your impressions lol. Pixel 3 xl or OnePlus 6T is going to be my next phone purchase I guess.
