This came the other day with my Street Fighter Anniversary. The game is only 8G, and it *requires* an 8G download to play.

I expected a walking puzzle sim, but — it's bad as is. Tearing, pausing and slowdown galore. Voice clips repeat, stutter, start over, or just end. Plus, I don't think even a digital manual is included, as far as I can tell, so I'm literally fumbling in the dark.

I'll come back to it if they patch it further (maybe it needs another 8G?) but if you're interested, beware.

Goddamn, the visuals in this old "gameplay" video are insane. I'm not surprised people are disappointed if this is what they showed before.

Is it surprising?

It was obvious this will be linear and quite boring (gameplay-wise) "horror" story that relies too strongly on horrific imaginery.

Looks like they where inspired by Crowley's hell. Endless corridors, this time without a waiting line.

A game about exploring a nasty afterworld where the real hell is actually playing the damn thing is quite clever, though.

Paradise Lost
Had this on my list for what seems ages. Forgot all about it. It seems somewhat reduced in its appeal and that video did nothing but left me wanting to play Dante's Inferno again.

That's a damn shame. I had hopes for this game especially for its unique setting No idea why it's releasing in this state.

Keep getting this confused with Scorn. Whatever happened to that?
That's doing fine. Humble Bundle picked it up under their publishing label alongside Disco Elysium (aka No Truce With The Furies), The Occupation, Ikenfell, A Hat In Time, Wandersong, and bunch more. They have good tastes for projects

For the record, there's a lot of other videos floating around. Here's another:

Still seems as I've said in the past, very avant-garde. See what I'll think when I go through it.

I watched a minute of the video. And only a minute to avoid spoilers. It looks fine to me.

Edit:

Dusk Golem its good to see someone on Reset who likes horror games as much (if not more) than myself. And a moderator too.

Censorship statement, which is kind of amusing
Dear Agony Fans,

After many consultations and hard work full of trials and errors, we have two pieces of news for you.

Firstly, we have managed to include a lot of things that we originally wanted to provide in the patch in the final game. It has been accepted by PEGI and other rating companies. The censorship now affects only several seconds from two endings (out of seven) and some scenes that may be unlocked only after the end of the game. We will be able to show them to you in a video that we are planning to release soon.

None of the scenes you have seen in the trailers and other promotional materials have been censored at all, and the game will feature those on all platforms:

  • Gore
  • Brutal Sex Scenes
  • Lesbian and Gay Sex Scenes
  • Genital Physics
  • Eye Gouging
  • Heart Plucking
  • Children Heads' Exploding
  • Setting Fire to Martyrs and Demons
  • Intense Violence
  • Strong Language
  • Drugs
*gif with breasts removed*

Secondly, due to legal issues, we are not going to be able to release the Adult Only patch. However, that content does not affect the game in any significant way because the deleted material that was supposed to be added in the latest version of the patch is from two endings (out of seven) and some scenes that may be unlocked only after the end of the game. We are going to publish a comparison video on May 30th, 2018 so you will not miss out anything.

Please bear in mind that leaving this content uncensored would result in the game being banned and us, Madmind Studio, being sued. That would simply lead to the studio being closed. Obviously, we don't want this to happen and we hope that you understand it.

Agony is still the game we have planned all along and we are very proud of what we have achieved.

Enjoy pursuing the Red Goddess in Hell!

What could possibly be the legal issues? Kid orgy?

So, I am mentally prepared for this to not be "great" even though when I first heard about it it sounded like everything I could possibly want in a horror title.

It's unfortunate to hear its been censored, but I mean, I can't honestly say that it bugs me that much. At the end of the day whatever they cut out isn't going to ultimately decide whether the game is "good" or "bad" in my or most peoples' estimation.

Hopefully this launches at no more than 20 USD. With the negative word going around, and likely middling (at best) reviews it will pull down, I'm "fine" with a 20 dollar walking simulator in Hell (I mean, as far as walking sims go, does that actually sound bad to you?) but any more than that and I'd have a lot of trouble pulling the trigger.

For better or worse I'm open for avant-garde experiences, I've personally always had the inkling this game wasn't ever really main for general consumption, it's reminded me more of an Ice Pick Lodge title for whatever reason (they're the people who made Pathologic, Knock-Knock, The Void is one that for some reason this game slightly reminds me of despite being quite different).

I could absolutely end up hating this game, but I'm in to give it a shot. I don't dislike advant-garde experiences even if they're not normally 'fun', for example I like the Drakengard games despite the fact 'fun' is definitely not a word I'd ever choose to describe those games as. My hope, and long-standing hope, is this will be an interesting experience. It could just not add up for me, but for whatever reason this simultaneously matches how I'd expected this to be received by what I know of the title, and now to see whatever I get out of it, good, bad, or more likely somewhere in-between.

I feel being a deep fan of horror you're kinda' prepared for some jank and unfun aspects, but hope it excels in other areas. For me one of the strangest purist examples for me is this PS1 horror game known as Chaos Break, which is all at once a fairly unremarkable Resident Evil clone and it is much worse designed than RE, but something about it made me like it despite not really thinking it's good, it had certain rooms, moments, and the like which strangely stuck with me and made me a bit fond of the title, despite me thinking it was a below-standard RE clone. I think if you delve enough into the horror genre you'll find these sorta' rough experiences. I guess I'll see where I land on Agony fairly shortly though.

I love horror games, and this line rings especially true for me since very few of the horror games I have played I would describe as "fun." It's sort of like Ebert's problem with the movie Aliens (if you've read that review): it's a dreadful film, oppressive, and dark. When you watch it, "fun" isn't the first thing to pop into mind. But you value that experience for the *other* emotions. For me, games like Outlast, or Silent Hill, Amnesia, etc, none of them are actually fun for me. I dread the initial run, and that's part of the feelings I expect the game to evoke.

So yeah, long and short of it is, I don't play horror games to have fun. I play for physiological or psychological reactions to the material. I felt physically ill on my first completion of Amnesia; it was so oppressive and scary for me, but I marathoned that game and immediately went to bed afterwards. When people ask me what I got out of that, I just reply: I've never had some of those feelings before, so it was by definition worth it for me.

I'm glad they was forthcoming about the censorship, I was right that it was just a couple of edits with two endings but I believe there are minor graphic changes too.

My guesses is the adult patch removed something as hardcore as a rape scene or minor mutilation, something fucked like that. Tbh if this is the case I'm not unhappy about that being removed, but the video will tell all.

This game looks like Dante's Inferno gave birth to Prey 2006 ... in all the wrong aspects. Well, let's wait and see.

Glad this isn't Scorn!

I was never a fan of the hell aesthetic. It's never been scary for me. It's fine in a game like Doom where you're going around killing shit like a badass but it's not what I look for in horror. This game still looked pretty great visually though. Now it looks...pretty ugly.

Art direction aside, it always looked boring from the gameplay shown, which is to say there wasn't much and they showed you talking with the female demon. I'm not shocked but I'll wait for more reviews.

I really liked the Oct 2017 alpha backer demo, the gunplay, atmosphere, and aesthetic were cool. It's been picked up by a good publisher, but I haven't kept up since.

This never looked good to me. The gameplay just seems non-existent and the whole "appeal" of the game relies entirely on its shock value.

It looks ugly and boring and nothing like the game they were showing in their trailers. This false advertising should be illegal.

I've seen about four and a half hours of this being played and it's mostly walking and puzzling, anchored by fairly remarkable art direction. The writing and voice acting are questionable, but like I said, that art be looking good.

Also heard (from other places as well as a post in this thread) that the console versions suffer from severe technical shortcomings, namely screen tear. So watch out, y'all.
