Thanks! I suppose I'll just keep trucking then.
Starting to get to the groove again but that mistake took the steam off for tonight.

I would say... no, it's slightly easier than Bloodborne. Having said that, there're points which are far far more unfair than Bloodborne, and because of that it's a more frustrating game. It's also easier to pick-up/put-down than BB, so in a way it depends what you're looking for - if you're willing to play it til you stop enjoying it, and then start something else, do that. However, I totally understand the mentality of "Don't start something if you're not going to finish it", because it's a little like wasting your time.
I'd say Bloodborne definitely nails the "fair" part of "tough but fair" better than Dark Souls. Dark Souls just has so many cheap, shitty ways to die that feel unfair. Along with the jankier controls, the DS can be an exercise in frustration. However, Bloodborne has the benefit of being released 4 years later and with a bigger budget, so I feel like direct technical comparisons are unfair.
On the other hand, with it's slower pace and wider build options I think DS is a much more learnable game. There are more opportunities to find a build that suits your play style, and you generally have more time to react. I feel like the faster pace of Bloodborne make it a bit more reliant on reflexes and finger dexterity, which may be an insurmountable obstacle if you can't master it. There also aren't as many build options to overcome your own shortcomings as a player.
TL,DR; they're hard in different ways, but both worth playing. Getting gud is definitely worth the feels.
I don't personally think that Dark Souls is all *that* difficult, especially if you're not putting rules on yourself such as never using summons to defeat bosses. It's a challenging game, but it rarely demands superhuman feats from the player: Dark Souls is methodical souls. I actually find its rhythm to be pretty relaxing much of the time.
I'd say that it's in that sort of ballpark and requires a similar investment to get the most out of.
I can't count how many times I've played this game over the years and I've never once had the swag sword drop.
Just to reply to this question as it is a fair one, relevant, and I did leave it open to interpretation.Hello sir,
Do you not have much patience with games "that are difficult," or do you not have much patience "full stop?"
If you approach Dark Souls "patiently" - i.e. observing things, not rushing in, keeping your shield up, etc. you will not have a terrible time.
Bloodborne is much harder in that respect, because while observation and patience are important, it forces you to be aggressive and this can get you killed if it doesn't click right away.
DS will give you a decent challenge, but only on a couple of occasions does it throw enemies at you without warning, and it will only punish you for putting yourself in a bad situation.
I would not say it's "incredibly difficult." I would save that descriptor for the likes of certain action games on harder difficulties, or "cheap death/gimmick" platformers.
If you still have your doubts, then I don't blame you for steering clear, but it's definitely more forgiving than Bloodborne.
(People who say BB is easier are generally biased due to years of Souls experience.)
When someone asks "is x souls gane easier than y souls game?" is not exactly a straightforward answer. Depends on which build you choose, avaliable co-op options, etc...
One thing is clear DS can be easily broken, with some directions you can get a pretty powerful weapon early on and destroy everything until midgame with ease, you can't do that with BB. Also, you are more less forced to close combat in BB and dominate parry and evasion while in DS you don't really need that if you choose magic.
That said DS is way less forgiving in checkpoint locations, bonfires are usually more hidden and far from each other. Also I think the level design is harder. But that's subjective...
So, as you can see is not an easy question, the best thing is to give it a try. If you have a hard time we are her to help you and if is too much, well...you can sell your physical copy lol.
Still if you don't finish it, I think is an experience worth of your time, DS is an excellent game that will provide some amusement either way.
No:
You have shields you can hide behind and block enemy attacks and you can kill many enemies from afar with an nearly unlimited amount of arrows (still have to be bought though). I think that's what many people do on their first playthrough. Also, some magic builds are pretty strong (pyromancer), maybe not as broken as in Demons Souls, but pretty strong. BB is a lot faster then DaS, but quick reflexes and evading damage instead of blocking it is still a thing in DaS, you can't block/tank everything.
Yes:
"Checkpoints" are harder to find and you sometimes go for long periods without them then in BB.
The more open level design means that you can end up in areas that aren't meant to played by low level chars.
Some areas are just bullshit death traps. People hold them to high regards, mostly because they look nice, but they re designed to frustrate you.
How hard a Souls game is mainly depends on how many of them you've played before. Somebody who played DaS2, 3 and BB won't have many problems, he will maybe even categorize the game as one of the more easy one. But a rookie will have a very tough time. It was called "Dark Souls - Prepare to Die" for a reason.
Wow. Thank you all for taking the time to post thoughtfully and with a whole lot of detail.
I think DkS3 and BB are the hardest (and some of the DkS2 DLC), but you may find the feel of DkS1 to be rather foreign compared to those (I think DkS3 takes quite a few combat/pacing cues from BB), so I'll be curious to hear what you think when you get into it proper. :)
Hey Era,
I ate the Firekeeper soul I found from the church. Don't know what I was thinking.
How bad did I do? I know I should have used it to reinforce the Estus flask, but somehow I ended up eating it. And then proceeded to lose that humanity on the Gargoyle fight. (Which I'm sure I'm going to rage over later on.)
Is there any point to going out of your way and keeping Solaire alive in Lost Izalith if I don't mean to summon him in the last fight?
I'm at the DLC now. I killed the first boss in two Crystal Soul Spears and a Great Soul Arrow XD.
Have fun with the next bosses... >.>I'm at the DLC now. I killed the first boss in two Crystal Soul Spears and a Great Soul Arrow XD.
Those are stones you'll buy in DLCthose masks that let you say a word when you throw them are hillarious
Good job!Fuck yeah. Beat Ornstein and Smough. No summons, no kindling bonfires, and nothing but the warrior class's starting gear. (the sword has been upgraded to +10)
Is anything permanently missable by using the alternative Blighttown entrance? I already went down to the Depths to get the large ember and farm some large titanite, but I don't want to lose my 15 soft humanity on a failed attempt on the gaping dragon and upper Blighttown
ThanksI reallly dont think so
I can only think of one thing you can permanently miss in this game and its not in blighttown

See I know what you're gonna say, you're gonna rightfully point out that the enemy lineup of cainhurst actually ain't all that great which brings it down
When played the game on PS3 the jumps felt tricky and the parring timing was a mess , the remaster feels solid with responsible controls , the back attack is easier to do. Saddly the graphics look aged and wished From improved them, they really look basic specially after coming from God of War , the visual impact is shocking. Gameplay and nostalgia saves this remaster.

I don't think you get anything special by summoning him for the last fight. If you want to solo Gwyn you can let him kill Solaire before you join in on the fun and it will actually make it harder. Is there any point to going out of your way and keeping Solaire alive in Lost Izalith if I don't mean to summon him in the last fight?
This game makes me want to replay DS3. Wish I had the dlc on PC though....I know not so long ago it was on sale for cheap but I missed it :(
I kinda want to replay Bloodborne(for like the 10th time) and Dark Souls 3 again myself. These games are just so good, can't get enough.
I enjoyed the DLC but I really like DSII in general.Lol I'm definitely replaying BB and replaying/playing the latter half for the first time for DkS3 after I'm done with this. Hell, I'm even thinking of replaying Dark Souls 2! Never played the DLC of that game.
It is? I thought it was odd and out of place, almost like a glitch lol :)
After playing the PS4 version i really want to double dip in the Switch Bersion.
Oh where are you Switch Version... Where are you...
Well you're using equipment that the host couldn't possibly get at that point in the game. I'm not defending plug pullers, but it's not a fair fight is it.invading sens fortress at sl 20 with black flame never gets old.
the amount of disconnects and suicides i see are insane haha
