Thanks! I suppose I'll just keep trucking then.

Starting to get to the groove again but that mistake took the steam off for tonight.

I would say... no, it's slightly easier than Bloodborne. Having said that, there're points which are far far more unfair than Bloodborne, and because of that it's a more frustrating game. It's also easier to pick-up/put-down than BB, so in a way it depends what you're looking for - if you're willing to play it til you stop enjoying it, and then start something else, do that. However, I totally understand the mentality of "Don't start something if you're not going to finish it", because it's a little like wasting your time.

I'd say Bloodborne definitely nails the "fair" part of "tough but fair" better than Dark Souls. Dark Souls just has so many cheap, shitty ways to die that feel unfair. Along with the jankier controls, the DS can be an exercise in frustration. However, Bloodborne has the benefit of being released 4 years later and with a bigger budget, so I feel like direct technical comparisons are unfair.

On the other hand, with it's slower pace and wider build options I think DS is a much more learnable game. There are more opportunities to find a build that suits your play style, and you generally have more time to react. I feel like the faster pace of Bloodborne make it a bit more reliant on reflexes and finger dexterity, which may be an insurmountable obstacle if you can't master it. There also aren't as many build options to overcome your own shortcomings as a player.

TL,DR; they're hard in different ways, but both worth playing. Getting gud is definitely worth the feels.

I don't personally think that Dark Souls is all *that* difficult, especially if you're not putting rules on yourself such as never using summons to defeat bosses. It's a challenging game, but it rarely demands superhuman feats from the player: Dark Souls is methodical souls. I actually find its rhythm to be pretty relaxing much of the time.

I'd say that it's in that sort of ballpark and requires a similar investment to get the most out of.

I can't count how many times I've played this game over the years and I've never once had the swag sword drop.

Hello sir,

Do you not have much patience with games "that are difficult," or do you not have much patience "full stop?"
If you approach Dark Souls "patiently" - i.e. observing things, not rushing in, keeping your shield up, etc. you will not have a terrible time.
Bloodborne is much harder in that respect, because while observation and patience are important, it forces you to be aggressive and this can get you killed if it doesn't click right away.
DS will give you a decent challenge, but only on a couple of occasions does it throw enemies at you without warning, and it will only punish you for putting yourself in a bad situation.
I would not say it's "incredibly difficult." I would save that descriptor for the likes of certain action games on harder difficulties, or "cheap death/gimmick" platformers.

If you still have your doubts, then I don't blame you for steering clear, but it's definitely more forgiving than Bloodborne.
(People who say BB is easier are generally biased due to years of Souls experience.)
Just to reply to this question as it is a fair one, relevant, and I did leave it open to interpretation.
I am actually pretty damn patient with everything in life. One of the things I find myself saying a whole lot is "It is what it is," meaning it is out of my hands so why let it affect me in any negative way. However when it comes to games I do not have a lot of time to play them. So if I feel as if I am "wasting my time," which could wind up meaning a whole lot of different things like it is just not very good, it is too long, it is not challenging, it is too challenging, I tend to lose my patience and move on to something else I feel like I will enjoy. So it is not I do not have patience because it is too hard or difficult. I am fine with that if it is a good game (which the reason I even posted is how highly regarded this game is and I have never played it). So that is what I specifically meant as I do not have much patience.

When someone asks "is x souls gane easier than y souls game?" is not exactly a straightforward answer. Depends on which build you choose, avaliable co-op options, etc...

One thing is clear DS can be easily broken, with some directions you can get a pretty powerful weapon early on and destroy everything until midgame with ease, you can't do that with BB. Also, you are more less forced to close combat in BB and dominate parry and evasion while in DS you don't really need that if you choose magic.

That said DS is way less forgiving in checkpoint locations, bonfires are usually more hidden and far from each other. Also I think the level design is harder. But that's subjective...

So, as you can see is not an easy question, the best thing is to give it a try. If you have a hard time we are her to help you and if is too much, well...you can sell your physical copy lol.

Still if you don't finish it, I think is an experience worth of your time, DS is an excellent game that will provide some amusement either way.

No:
You have shields you can hide behind and block enemy attacks and you can kill many enemies from afar with an nearly unlimited amount of arrows (still have to be bought though). I think that's what many people do on their first playthrough. Also, some magic builds are pretty strong (pyromancer), maybe not as broken as in Demons Souls, but pretty strong. BB is a lot faster then DaS, but quick reflexes and evading damage instead of blocking it is still a thing in DaS, you can't block/tank everything.

Yes:
"Checkpoints" are harder to find and you sometimes go for long periods without them then in BB.
The more open level design means that you can end up in areas that aren't meant to played by low level chars.
Some areas are just bullshit death traps. People hold them to high regards, mostly because they look nice, but they re designed to frustrate you.

How hard a Souls game is mainly depends on how many of them you've played before. Somebody who played DaS2, 3 and BB won't have many problems, he will maybe even categorize the game as one of the more easy one. But a rookie will have a very tough time. It was called "Dark Souls - Prepare to Die" for a reason.

Wow. Thank you all for taking the time to post thoughtfully and with a whole lot of detail.
Really, very truly appreciated, especially since I do know and realize it is a pretty subjective question and also open ended.

I believe I am going to pick it up based on all of the feedback. I was going to pick it up on the Switch just to have the portability factor, but still not having a release date is making it not easy to do that. I will wait a few weeks to see if that changes, and if not I will dive in probably on the PS4. Sounds like that is where the more active community is overall.

I think DkS3 and BB are the hardest (and some of the DkS2 DLC), but you may find the feel of DkS1 to be rather foreign compared to those (I think DkS3 takes quite a few combat/pacing cues from BB), so I'll be curious to hear what you think when you get into it proper. :)

Little update, I just beat ornstein and smough and the game has been pretty easy so far, definitely the easiest out of them. The only bit ive got annoyed at is sen's fortress but after knowing the way it was okay.

Is there any point to going out of your way and keeping Solaire alive in Lost Izalith if I don't mean to summon him in the last fight?

Hey Era,

tumblr_nahh7dl6mX1twe13wo1_500.gif

I ate the Firekeeper soul I found from the church. Don't know what I was thinking.

How bad did I do? I know I should have used it to reinforce the Estus flask, but somehow I ended up eating it. And then proceeded to lose that humanity on the Gargoyle fight. (Which I'm sure I'm going to rage over later on.)

If you do Anastacia quest no one will notice...there are more soulkeepers souls around the world

Is there any point to going out of your way and keeping Solaire alive in Lost Izalith if I don't mean to summon him in the last fight?

Why would you leave your only friend behind.

There is no reward if you save him

Fuck yeah. Beat Ornstein and Smough. No summons, no kindling bonfires, and nothing but the warrior class's starting gear. (the sword has been upgraded to +10)

When played the game on PS3 the jumps felt tricky and the parring timing was a mess , the remaster feels solid with responsible controls , the back attack is easier to do. Saddly the graphics look aged and wished From improved them, they really look basic specially after coming from God of War , the visual impact is shocking. Gameplay and nostalgia saves this remaster.

Is anything permanently missable by using the alternative Blighttown entrance? I already went down to the Depths to get the large ember and farm some large titanite, but I don't want to lose my 15 soft humanity on a failed attempt on the gaping dragon and upper Blighttown

The only things worth getting in upper Blighttown is an amazing Pyromancy, a cool armor set and maybe a shield. If you can do without those it is not worth going...

Some dialogue with a specific shopkeeper, but nothing important.

I personally think the game looks really great on the basis that the environment and enemy design is still, and will always be, amazing. The little visual touches they added like the redone lighting and some other effects are good enough.

Also obviously they're saving the Bluepoint SotC remake treatment for Demon's Souls to be announced in a couple weeks at E3.

I gotta disagree with the graphics not being enough. There's AO and high res textures and great alpha effects too, even though there are some spots that stick out as real rough (that house in the off distance in Undead Burg looks like ass.) I'm playing in 4k and this game manages to be a looker in my eyes, even after GoW.

I don't think you get anything special by summoning him for the last fight. If you want to solo Gwyn you can let him kill Solaire before you join in on the fun and it will actually make it harder.

I kinda want to replay Bloodborne(for like the 10th time) and Dark Souls 3 again myself. These games are just so good, can't get enough.

Lol I'm definitely replaying BB and replaying/playing the latter half for the first time for DkS3 after I'm done with this. Hell, I'm even thinking of replaying Dark Souls 2! Never played the DLC of that game.

I wonder what will be the more popular souls game on PC...ds3 still has like 10k average per day. Ds1r is around 24k right now. I don't really pvp so not sure which people prefer but I know ds3 combat is better

Woah I am rusty. Undead Burg is giving me troubles...
Also this game is hard to play with a busy life schedule. 1 or 2 hours max a day are not nearly enough to make progress.

Just got summoned for Nito and the host decided to run around and aggro all the giant skeletons. Neither of us had a divine weapon, so you can guess how that went.

Can anyone help me out on the PC version and give me a Crown of Dusk? I had no idea that a Great Chaos Fireball would immediately kill Dusk upon killing the Golden Golem and now I can't get a Crown of dusk on my first play through and my main damage is Pyromancy, damnit. That is a huge freaking oversight on the developer's part. I am not even sure if I will even be able to access the DLC area now with her dead.

Can someone explain to me how the hell I got the Master Key in my inventory? I chose the Old Witch Ring as starting item (because why not) and suddenly I have the Master Key too. Is it because of the class I picked?

Edit: Yup, it's a Thief thing lol. NVM

Having now got all but one pyromancy spell, it's a ton of fun and nice to finally do what I intended to all those years ago on my first playthrough.
(2011: I rolled pyro, wandered into the graveyard, thought "this shit is weak" and rerolled Bandit, my pyromancy following this was glorious iron flesh spam without realising it was initially OP, good times!)

Not sure what the best uses of my five slots are though, fireballs of some variety are a given, chaos fire whip has been good to me so that stays.
The flamethrower one I got in the painted world feels more novelty than anything else, the mists seem PvP focused (especially acid, don't think hollows care for durability).
Power within is an interesting wild card.
The chaos storm and its various similar types definitely come across to me as more for enemies (or specifically the lass in front of bed of chaos) to use for the "oh shit" factor because that mess takes time to cast, locks you in place and then is inconsistent whether it actually hits well enough, pretty much one use as well. Bit disappointing this was Quelanna's ultimate gift, popped it off a few times for novelty moments like diving into the phalanx pile of sneaking around to Seath's rear but naaaaaah, not worth it.

One gripe with even my beloved chaos firewhip and chaos fireball, and that's the magma after-effect being damn inconsistent, great idea that only pans out half the time if that.
edit^ and when it does it's killing Dusk by accident in Reins case, oh man

I don't remember black knights being so easy to kill. I guess future souls games forced me to get better.

Btw when you see ghosts of other players (not bloodstains) are they seeing you at the same time?

Ugh, I'm a bit disappointed they didn't add a respec option for NG+. I love the idea of NG+, but I really enjoyed being able to reroll characters in Dark Souls 2 and 3 so that you don't have to have the exact same character going into NG+. I guess I'll just start a new game then.

Got a slab from one of the lizards in the Great Hollow.
Accidently hit Seigmeyer when fighting the Chaos Eaters in Izalith, so no slab from Sieglinde this go around.
Went Dragon Scale/Chunk farming, first Darkwraith dropped a slab.

Well you're using equipment that the host couldn't possibly get at that point in the game. I'm not defending plug pullers, but it's not a fair fight is it.
