I would gladly take M2 emulation a la carte over this (not like I need to own Comix Zone, Alien Storm, Vectorman, Virtua Fighter 2 etc). People were upset when it was revealed that the Switch would be missing out on this compilation but I think it got the much better outcome.

I agree, but it really does come down to "you get what you pay for." This compilation, for the most part, is exactly what I'd expect for the amount of budget it probably got.

For people calling for an M2 collection, put your money where your mouth is and buy this:

https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/sega-3d-classics-collection-3ds

It's not 50 games but 9, and one of them is a duplicate so basically 8 games, but it's one great compilation by M2.

Already did!

I think you're right, sadly.

Played this a little last night and overall was pleased.

I'm sure the gripes over emulation are legit (there are people who spend serious time mulling over these details) but generally speaking it's a hefty collection of games, many of them superb, and they seem to run well enough.

Also, is there a way to toggle between Genesis/Megadrive versions of each game so that we get the regional differences (such as Bare Knuckle 3 Japan being the better games) or are we stuck with the U.S. versions?

Oh ok. So you can't save skate but you can rewind?

Shouldn't be too bad then...
For challenges, there is no save state and no rewind.

For the other trophies (which aren't linked to challenges), you can use both save states and rewinds, although most of the trophies are easy enough to get without them anyway.

I tried playing it on my 2014 Macbook Air but it brought it to its knees because of the stupid frontend and it couldn't detect my USB controller anyway. Luckily I didn't pay anything (got a bunch of Mega Drive games on Steam through Sega's annual giveaways).

A Haswell i5 computer should be able to run a Mega Drive compilation in its sleep but no, got to shove that bloated bedroom UI down our throats.

Xbax. Had some reward credits that had me only $6 out of pocket. Will double dip tho.
Fair enough. Hit me up when you do!

Sure. If they put them on a console I own.

I'd prefer trophies and slightly dodgy emulation. Guess I'm part of the problem .

I'm not saying people should buy it instead of this collection, but it's a good companion purchase. And also gives you some portable Sega because some people have been wanting that.

But since there is no PS Vita native release, trophies and portable won't happen ever unless Sony actually makes a more successful handheld.

Or Nintendo implements something. I'd love to see their spin on it.

My Steam version has just updated to the new version. Challenges are now there and achievements work.

I can confirm that all the games I owned prior to the update are still there(Sonic 3&K, ECCO etc) and it appears they are allowed in online matchmaking though I didn't try a game myself yet.

One issue I've noticed is the multi region games seems to be broken right now. Bare Knuckle 3 wouldn't load.

Frankly, if Nintendo was going to do trophies, they would have done them already. Nintendo trophies aren't happening.

There was a rumour floating around last September.

I'd presume it would be a totally different take on the concept.

Either way I'd hope for a similar challenge mode to this with whatever collection they release on the Switch . And maybe some in game achievements like Disgaea 5.

A-uh... um... why is the audio skipping like this? Will it be fixed? I can't play anything like this. It'll drive me crazy.

What's the difference between this collection and the one on steam since 2016?

Here you go:

• Two-player online multiplayer
• Leaderboards
• Challenge Modes – short challenges give old favourites a new twist
• Additional graphics filters & border options
• ROMs from other regions for games with significant differences
• Fast-forward and rewind
• Sprite limit disable
• Mirror mode – reverse the screen for a fresh challenge
• VR support
• Mac and Linux support

An earlier version of this collection was released on Steam back in 2016. But the Steam version just got an update today with all the features from the console version, with online leaderboards, online multiplayer and Linux and Mac OSX support. amongst other things.

What's the difference between this collection and the one on steam since 2016?

It's basically the same thing, just with additional online fearures.

Totally forgot this came out. I love the convenience of these collections and this is the first time Alien Solider has been released on console over in the US, correct?

PC version got a bloom kick and upped contrast or saturation or something. Games look ugly and perform like shit.

If you select Fast or Fastest, the graphics look correct and the performance issues are gone, but the room hub is lacking effects. Otherwise, I have no other issues.

So the Steam version gets about 5 extra games, mods and VR support. What about us console players... :(

Am I just missing something obvious or is there no per-button remapping? When I go into input options there's just 2 presets, and for some games neither of them are ideal since it seems most developers never reached consensus on which button should jump on a Genesis pad. That translates poorly to a modern controller because it makes either B or X jump in many cases since those are the A and C substitutes. I know I can remap buttons on a system level but is there seriously no way to do so in-game?

Anybody who owns the PS4 version wanna weigh in their thoughts? Any glaring issues that'd make this a regretful purchase? I mainly just want this for the sake of convenience for some select titles like Shinobi 3, Ristar, Vectorman, Alien Solider, and Comix Zone.

Played with the Steam version for a few hours today. Here are some impressions:

  • I like the addition of challenges. Wish there were more of em.
  • In my experience after booting a game the emulation clearly looks and feels like its running at about 30fps(even though my fps counter is at a stable 60fps) and after about 30-45 seconds the issue will fix itself and run fine.
  • No remappable buttons and only two presets. Come on, man!
  • Region select and mods are broken at the moment.. Sega acknowledged the issue and said they're working on it.
  • I'm glad they didn't patch out the simple launcher for the Steam version. The new frontend still has issues.
  • I played through Gunstar Heroes to completion with a random online(shout out to the person I played with. Thanks for sticking it out till the end. You played beautifully). It certainly didn't feel great but it was playable. However, I tried playing a few games of Streets of Rage 2 online and they were all completely unplayable. Your online experience will vary with who you connect with.
Overall it was an ok update for the Steam version. I really hope they add button config.
