We've been self-funded for almost 6 years and we have most of the funding for Temtem already on our arks. The Kickstarter will help just a bit on the financial side, but we especially want it for the community creation aspect. We really want to develop the game around the community and open the development.

With our previous game, Immortal Redneck, it became clear that we should have involved the community early on in development and not have waited for the game's release to start receiving feedback. We made some assumptions that led to us not putting enough effort into certain areas of the game, and that ended up hurting the game's perception by the public and got us off to a not-so-great start.

We want to change that, and Kickstarter is the perfect way to do it. We want our backers to be involved in the development, watch our day-to-day updates and provide feedback along the way. We plan to maintain an open development through our Discord server, especially with our Alpha Hero backers (and above) that will be testing the game from a very early stage and will help us shape the future of Temtem.

Lastly, since Temtem is very influenced by a well-known franchise, we aren't really sure how positive the public reception is going to be. Kickstarter allows us to show the game to the public and gather feedback early on. We want to expand the well-known franchise and add features requested by its users for years, but we need to see if there's enough interest in that before embarking on this massive adventure.

"inspired"

Godspeed, devs. I hope this does well for them. The more monster collection RPGs, the better.

Holy crap that's so blatant.

Like, I'm not sure if I could get past it. It looks like a game that cartoon characters would play in an episode parodying Pokemon, and that aesthetic just isn't doing it for me.

I'm fine with the fact that the game is heavily "inspired" in term of gameplay
But... I mean... at least come up with your own design

Pokemon "inspired" lol. Hopefully there are more than enough unique features to this game to help it sell.

Crema Games' Those are the ones that made Immortal Redneck, a pretty fun roguelite FPS. And this games looks cool. Hope it gets funded, but the MMO elements give me some fear that it will end it's service six months after it starts, with the extremely localised multiplayer market in Fortnite on a few games.

Even the music sounds close. And that trainer animation is VERY close to the ones in SM/USUM.

Looks cool though, hope it gets funded and not taken down?

I feel there are more unique ways to do an MMO where you collect monsters. You don't have to rip the evolution, trainer battles, etc. straight from Pokémon. The artstyle looks really cool though

What the fuck is the point of genetic degradation though? It just sounds like a pain in the ass.

Can't Nintendo/GameFreak sue them? There's a difference between being a monster battler like Yokai Watch and being a blatant clone like this.

I get using the basic gameplay elements, but even using the plot of all the Pokemon games and character designs? Oooh boy. One of my rules for kick-starting is if an idea is a little too lifted from an existing idea aka "inspired," the results aren't going to be particularly good. Good luck to them and all who contribute, but I'm not touching this one.

Imagine if this game manages to do following Pokemon (in an MMO setting no less) and Gamefreak once again refuses to bring it back.

I'm intrigued.

I always get kinda annoyed at the people who cry "copycat!" at things like this. Like sure it's obvious, but would you have said the same for the first person shooters in the wake of Doom? JRPGs after Dragon Quest? Shovel Knight after Mega Man? It seems weirdly defensive and hinders creativity & competition - if someone wants to take on Pokémon, let 'em, if any franchise desperately needs competition it's that one.

That said I hope there's an option to turn off the MMO aspects, namely seeing other players run around. It makes it look incredibly mid 2000's freemium MMO and immersion breaking. Have dedicated zones for it instead.

70k doesn't seem like much for something trying to be an MMO.
A lot of kickstarters will try to get a certain amount of money just to prove that there's interest in their project, and then they will try to get investing from another party or just have the rights to their idea purchased outright.

Seems no different from Yooka-Laylee being a blatant ripoff of Banjo-Kazooie.

There's a huge difference though, if you watch the trailers and look at the KS page, it's not people crying copycat because it's a monster taming game; they're crying copycat because sever significant design choices, gameplay mechanics, etc are wholly ripped from the Pokemon series.

I agree with you that competition is good, it's just kind of hilarious the balls these guys have for ripping it off that blatantly and trying to play it straight. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out, I'd prefer it to not be an MMO, but if that stuff is optional and it would still be playable in the event they couldn't maintain servers I'm all in.

That's true, but I don't remember this level of vitriol being aimed at Bloodstained, Mighty No. 9 or Yooka Laylee, unless you're exempt if the original creator is involved somehow.

Vitriol is strong, people just seem to be poking fun because it is not subtle. Also, those are different contexts and you hit the nail on the head; beloved creators trying to revive beloved franchises but without the support of corporate IP holders vs hey we just made a Pokemon game.

This looks great, loving the art direction.

Well said, I feel the exact same way.

It is different when the original creator is involved.

Why would anyone call someone out for copying themselves?
