I wish it was a deluxe Azul as opposed to a giant version. I like the game but not that much for a giant version with mousepads. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I know it will still sell well though.

I just taught myself the rules for Empyreal: Spells & Steam, the newest Level 99 game (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/level99games/empyreal-spells-and-steam-a-fantasy-railway-buildi). I did this because the Kickstarter is ending in about 6 days and I'm trying to decide if I still want the game. I'm already getting Founders of Gloomhaven and I think that may fill the role for me.

I'm scheduling a teaching game at 12 p.m. EDT, which is about 7 hours from this post. I need 1-3 other players and up to 2 hours of time. As long as you have audio and are comfortable with Tabletop Simulator you're good to go.

I don't anticipate a ton of interest, but just in case there's any conflict, Tet and Rover have first dibs. Even if I only get 1 person that's still great since I can see how it feels with 2 players.

I opted out of backing Sprawlopolis after all. Shipping cost to Canada too high relative to the cost of the game, and didn't feel like the stretch goals were that necessary. I'll just pick it up retail later on.

It looks like there's only one interested in Empyreal, so we're postponing another 30 minutes or so for lunch. If there are any last minute takers just let me know.

Is there a good list of games available to play on Tabletop Simulator? I'm mostly looking so I can teach myself Arkham Horror LCG decently before I teach my GF how to play with me.

I haven't found a listing but I've found almost every game I could think of so far on it. The interface is not always great on some or they're super finicky, but everything even semi-popular (or new) finds it's way to it.

Ya, I was going to say the same thing. Check out the workshop. Some of the more complex games are automated to speed it up a bit but almost anything you play will take longer to play in Tabletop. It's still a great option, but just keep that in mind.

Thanks to the 3 people who helped test! Even with 15 minutes of rules explanation (I like to do this quickly and I'm sorry it dragged on), it took maybe 2 hours 10 minutes for scoring and everything with 4 players. Setup would add some more time.

Positive:
I think it's interesting mechanically, and I think you can feel that these ideas have been worked on for a while. If I recall correctly the game has been in development for years.
Actions seem to flow smoothly. You keep moving along a track while gaining various options to make your turns more effective.

Negative:
Unfortunately, at least on TTS, the board ended up extremely busy where my brain started feeling paralyzed trying to count up unconnected train groups and find certain trains on certain colors.

It might be that the physical version will look better, but I still feel it may be a bit too much setup, teardown, and fiddly play/scoring, particularly when I already have Founders of Gloomhaven ordered. I ended up backing out of the Empyreal Kickstarter.

So, Paradox have announced that their major titles will become board games in the near future with Crusader Kings already up on Kickstarter.

Published by Fria Ligan (Free League) as well, one of my favorite PnP RPG publishers. :o

Will be quite interesting to see how this goes.

This is awesome news, love their games, and im always looking for board games in this style.

Played games at a friend's last night:

One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak... This was good, but the roles seemed a little more unnecessarily complicated compared to the base box. Still lots of fun. We played two games.

Then we tried a dexterity game called 'oh snap'. Seems to be a new version of something we had as kids. Fun, but after one round I was ready for something else. Still, this is the type of game I'd like to have at home for the family, for when my son gets a bit older.

We then played a round of codenames, which was fun, as usual.
Almost always I feel that I get stuck with words that don't relate at all, then by the end I can usually come up with a good 3 or 4 word clue. Always a fun time.

A couple people had to go, and so we tried out splendor, which none but one had actually played before, but I'm aware it's a popular title.
It's not quite as appealing to me as I thought it should be. It's definitely a thinky game. Not sure it's for me.. Can't imagine keeping track of every other player's actions while also juggling my own.. Well I'm curious to try it again, but I'm not racing to add it to my collection.

I'm not big into board games but I just pledged to the Hellboy Kickstarter, anyone else?

It looked cool, but I'm not that familiar with hellboy (only saw the first movie). These big expensive games you really need to have a hook into you to justify the costs.

There's that Pirate game, Skull Tales, which has a shit ton of pirate miniatures and tiles and things. I initially backed in early bird to get the bonus miniature, then realized I'm really not that into pirates enough to just drop over a hundred bucks, and canceled.

Played my second full game of Eldritch Horror--this time with the Forsaken Lore expansion--and boy that game is a good time. I flubbed some of the rules, and made things much harder than they had to be for the first few turns (I forgot to flip the mythos cards, and just followed the instructions for the Mythos phase--so gates and monster surges everywhere!). But even my buddy who was skeptical about the game had a blast. Somehow we beat Yog-Shothoth without breaking too much of a sweat.

Anyway, the game that was, after our first attempt, an intimidating slog, was a complete joy to play this time around.

A nice article from the Beeb on some oddities from Waddington's archive. Scoop looks genuinely fascinating, and now I'm wondering if there's any modern games that use that as their premise? I can't help but think it's got scope for today.

Backed Shadowrun: Sprawl Ops mostly because cooperative worker placements are fairly rare. The only notable one that comes to mind is Atlantis Rising. Interestingly enough, that one is getting a second edition heading to Kickstarter later this summer.

Just a cautionary note here, according to posts in this thread, the Shadowrun creator has failed with other Kickstarters before.

Your post got me to read up on the game, and coop WP sounds cool, but the KS pitch massively turned me off. Yeah, there's a coop expansion. That's right, it's 2 games in 1! The coop is exclusive! Better back now if you don't want to miss out and never have coop if you ever get a retail version down the line! Way to make sure I never buy your product, devs.

But in terms of coop euros, I'm waiting to see how Scythe will do it. Rise of Fenris rulebook should be coming out this wk, so I'll check how they'll implement their coop module.

Edit:

My girlfriend and I are brand new to the world of board games and we're hoping to try some out to break up the routine of getting back from work and immediately zoning out in front of the TV and to give us something new to do on weekends.

In terms of games for complete beginners, I've been look at Azul, Pandemic, and Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions for two complete newbies?

Those are good though my gf hate Pandemic after playing Legacy Season 1. I'd recommend Rising 5 over Pandemic if you don't already own it. King Domino is good (haven't played Queen but I hear they are similiar), "...and then we held hands" is a good two player game. Raptor is fun. Ticket to Ride is very gateway-like game.

Codenames Duet, maybe. Splendor. Forbidden Desert. Raptor. 7 Wonders Duel.

I haven't played Azul so not sure how it works for 2p, but I only hear good things about it overall. Pandemic is decent. Sherlock is an odd one. It's an interesting experience, but it's not really a board game, if that makes sense?

I second ticket to ride. Castle Panic is a fun and funky coop game. But let's see, biggest beginner suggestions(other than ticket to ride) I tend to see are Carseconne, Catan and forbidden island. I can agree on the last one for sure.

I'd give more suggestions, but I don't get my collection played much since I don't have a social group at the moment. Otherwise I'd have more, and I wound up with more intermediate and difficult games partly by accident

Oh also flux is a great suggestion

If you enjoy music at all, I'd recommend Dropmix. My wife isn't a huge fan of boardgames in general, but she loves Dropmix. It's a casual friendly game but there's enough strategy there to keep it interesting.

You cannot go wrong with Azul or forbidden desert. Both are awesome. Pandemic is good too but is a little more hardcore for total beginners. If you want to go straight beginner, azul and forbidden island which is a little easier than forbidden desert.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I'll probably add Forbidden Desert to the list and maybe hold off on pandemic for the moment. Is there are difference between Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Island?

This game look incredible! I think it would perfect suit us as well. The price tag is the only thing holding me back a bit. On Amazon (UK) it's sitting at £110!

Don't know about the UK, but in the US it frequently goes on sale and can be got around half price. There's a lot of extra card packs you can buy too, but the base game comes with plenty to enjoy.

I'll back at home tonight in 8 hours give or take..

I have to decide whether to back it or not at this stage..
Since also there are new vast ks, new heroes of land air &sea is, and in 6 days a new mythic battles pantheon..
Ughhhh ;_;

I'd say no, wait for retail. The chat history on Discord has my thoughts on it, and Rover or others should be able to answer questions.

There are no physical pictures, and though it was an interesting concept, it was super fiddly and visually busy. I'm hoping Founders avoids this.

Unfortunately I won't be on Discord for a few days.

So did Star Wars Destiny just like fall off a cliff or something? Pretty much all local shops stopped doing any events, the value of the cards has plummeted greatly, and just not seeing any talk of it anymore when for a while it was so so hot.

I see any collectible card/dice game being a flash in the pan while Magic's still around.

I'm very surprised that Dice Masters is still a thing, and they they're pumping out sets every couple months.

It's definitely died down a lot. Lack of decent support from FFG and the huge gaps between the latest release hasn't helped any. The announcement that the first 3 sets released are basically getting shuffled out had a similar effect to the x-wing 2.0 announcement, where people decided now was a good time to jump ship and leave... except even people that are remaining aren't going to find much use for those cards/investment sometime next year.

the game went through a really rough spot between Set 2-> Set 3... pretty unbalanced. The first 2 sets were fueled by speculation and you couldn't find it.

now it's been stretched out forever between sets, which I largely believe due to excess stock of Set 3 and Set 4 laying around on retailer shelves. Essentially retailers had been putting in insane orders hoping to get 20-30% of their order (at best)... and then at Set 3 and Set 4, those orders were 100% shipped, and suddenly there was a giant glut of product.

it's a pity because set 4 is really well designed and the game is in a really good place right now - and it looks like the future sets are going to only continue that

Some other warning signs of I've noticed:
1. No kids playing
2. The amount of space a collection takes up... the dice just add a ton of space requirement to the game.

It's been funny to watch the sales on Pandemic: Iberia creep steadily lower. "Limited collector's edition" indeed.

For anyone who's unfamiliar, Iberia is basically a 2nd Edition of Pandemic that's much prettier, with slightly improved gameplay, and a bit of built-in expansion content to extend the game's life (extra-difficult options for the diseases that can be mixed and matched, and a scenario where infections migrate every turn towards hospitals). If you've managed to get into this hobby without owning or getting sick of Pandemic, Iberia is the version to get. There's only two caveats. First, unless you live in Spain, it takes a little more map-searching to place cubes on unfamiliar city names. Second and more importantly, Pandemic Legacy is a fantastic experience that you could explore instead, and if you have a great time with two seasons of Pandemic Legacy you'll probably not be hungry for more of a game that's so similar.

Yea I see the game over stocked most places, retailers got tons of all the sets on shelves now. Something similar happened with Monsterpocalypse, first several runs sold out, the stores over ordered the new sets and the reprints and got stuck with lot of unsold product... which just hurts their want to order the next sets and well.... yea bad news.

Destiny dying down is cool news to me. Maybe I'll be able to snap up some sets for pretty cheap amount. I liked the way the game plays but everything else about the game was unappealing to me.
I've got a copy of New York Slice and Camel Up showing up soon. My fake Mysterium got sorted out and I got a full refund, so that was good.

Speaking of, I heard Monsterpocalypse is coming back, hopefully it turns out better this time

Too bad about destiny, game was fun, but couldn't get to a shop running it after July last year and I've kinda banned myself from any game involving actual blind packs... wouldn't mind picking up a Boba Fett starter to finish off my collection though.

Which reminds me, when I actually get a gaming group going wherever I end up, I really need to try/pick up Millenum blades, I think it'd scratch my tcg itch nicely

It's worth noting it would at minimum be 6+ months before any rotation occurs, which is a long time for standard meta (2+ years).

I would love to type up a bunch about Destiny but I'm on mobile and about to go to bed. Maybe another day!

I know there's some BattleCON/L99 fans in here. They put up a new podcast where one of the topics of discussion was BattleCON Unleashed, the upcoming Kickstarter project containing Dev Remastered, Wanderers, a lore/art tome, and a big-box with tuckboxes for everyone called the Unleashed box.

Here's a quick write-up about what all it contains:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2001909/info-battlecon-unleashed-podcast-dev-remastered-bi

Wanted to get the word out. I'm so frickin hyped for the big box and tuckboxes, not to mention new fighters in Dev, Wanderers, the new book, and whatever the stretch goals will be (going up to $1,000,000? I don't particularly want them to split focus and try to do miniatures but I wonder if that's what the high-dollar stretches will be?). And for all of that to be coming at the same time? Absolutely ridiculous, I just cannot wait for July.

Outside of a few rare popular cards, the price of singles has dropped dramatically, its almost easier to just buy the singles of the cards/dice you want than buying blind packs.

I wish it was a deluxe Azul as opposed to a giant version. I like the game but not that much for a giant version with mousepads. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I know it will still sell well though.

Just out of curiosity what would you add to a deluxe version? The base game has amazing components allready?

Thanks! Are there any out there that people are looking to? Seems like most people post heavy hitters here though.
zulux has a "Kickstarters of Interest" channel on our discord that gets most of the big ones at least mentioned. If you want a more complete list of what's coming out, Tantrum House puts up a video twice a month with what's coming out during the month.

He's not always correct on the ones that don't have a definitive date. For instance, I'm looking forward to Death May Die, which he said would be launching sometime in June. I guess that's not the case, as I got lambasted for saying that on BGG, with that video as my reference. CMON's doing a Kick-Ass flash campaign near the end of the month, so I'll have to wait a little longer to empty my wallet for some more Lovecraftian goodness.

Recessed boards or some sort of acrylic overlay, scoring track, etc. I know the base game has great components already.

I just don't love the giant nature of it. I would like a bit bigger but this just seems huge to me. Neoprene mats also don't scream deluxe to me as well.

It's just my opinion. It'll do well enough for sure but it just isn't what I was hoping for. I will probably just buy the collectors tiles when they are in stock again.
