I don't feel like Slayer lost anything myself. Imo, they gained the ability to stretch their skills. Reign in Blood was a great album that goes by in a blink. Should every album get faster? From what I gather, they got sick of how fast things got after that tour so they slowed down a bit and the two follow ups really showed how they could embrace using slow just as effectively as fast.

Compare this to Dragonforce who has two gears, go and stop with respect to their speeds. Hell, a lot of band's are like that. No nuance to their album, just balls out all the way for some long ass album your tired of listening to half way through. Now after Seasons, I think things drop off pretty sharply, but I do still like their newer material. Definitely not as good as the early days but I think they have aged a lot better musically than the rest of the Big Four.

As I've gotten older, Hell Awaits has become my favorite Slayer album by far with Show No Mercy second. I can no longer listen to most of South of Heaven or Seasons in the Abyss even though I used to like them a lot. I don't necessarily mind the slower instrumentation, but I dislike Tom's slower vocal style. Awful.

i've also realized that there are only two good Metallica albums.

Show No Mercy is my favourite Slayer album, but I think my favourite song is probably Hell Awaits.

It is not bad, but they lost some of that energy, not all about speed but it is like they did not know how to do it properly,

So I was watching a random 80s Keyboard review video on Youtube from "The 8-bit guy" who is pretty much the nerdiest dude I've ever seen and he drops that fucking bombshell out of nowhere!? Wtf

One of the best "Wait... What?" moment I've ever seen

I saw the story in the local news about it, and was like, what 40-something-year-old person is still goofing off on escalators?

It makes perfect sense now. I actually think his greatest work was getting thrown out of a Gene Simmons concert last year for heckling him.

RIP dumbass

New Gruesome is straight up Leprosy and Spiritual Healing worship if you had any doubts. Crusade of Brutality is probably my favorite tune so far but their all pretty kick ass. I'd say if you liked any early Death or the first Gruesome, you'll most likely enjoy this as well. Its not breaking into new ground by any means but is good for what it does.

Virgil's The Pacer should be up on Bandcamp. It's only up on iTunes and Amazon and their downloads are shit quality.

I rarely get impressed by new releases these days, which makes it all the more special when that happens. The last time was with Dark Sonority's Kaosrekviem and Medico Peste's Herzogian Darkness. Bethlehem's latest album managed to do the same for me, largely due to Onielar's vocal performance.

Gängel Gängel Gang is another great song from the album.

I just ordered a bunch of cd's including some Van Halen. Their debut and Fair Warning have been sorely missed. Used to have everything up to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge but sold it all off for some stupid reason or other. This time, I just selected what I remember loving and left the rest. Was used so pretty cheap. Just waiting to get it all. I did stream quite a bit this past Saturday while cleaning. Hot for Teacher and Unchained were great to hear again.

Also found out I'd gotten rid of Back in Black at some point too which may have been on tape. That cd just arrived today and I had a blast singing along to it.

After pretty much breaking the replay button, I think The Antichrist may be my favorite Slayer song.

Crionics is my favorite off of Show No Mercy. Maiden/NWOBHM riff at the second half crushes.
Hell Awaits is by far my favorite Slayer album. The atmosphere, riffs, vocal style, imagery, everything. Also, Haunting The Chapel is the perfect EP.

Hellbringer - Awakened From The Abyss
Pretty much a Hell Awaits clone. We need more Hell Awaits era worship.

Song of the Day:

Morbid Angel - Summoning Redemption

Don't get me wrong, Altars is still the best death metal album ever, but Gateways and Formulas are still god-tier death metal albums. I have been jamming Gateways the past few weeks like I do every summer and it remains fucking awesome.

Edit: I just realized it's not my day. The 3 day weekend threw me for a loop. Gateways kicks ass though so no regrets

The Antichrist is definitely a very fun Slayer tune. Almost playful and I love every second.

Agreed on Crionics and the Maiden riff. Back when I actually played bass I loved playing along to that song.

Hellbringer is bad ass. I wanted more of that era Slayer and they definitely deliver. Their weird to listen to though because you'll go along catching Slayer riffs and expecting the song to go a different direction but it doesnt...was hard to get accustomed to at first.

I'd add My Regime which is more of a later era Slayer style band. Been a while since I've heard them so I don't recall exactly where in line they fit but I remember liking them too.

Seriously though guys, if anyone was hesitating on the Slayer farewell tour... don't. It's worth it. Setlist is solid, the performance and atmosphere was spectacular (I honestly wasn't expecting it to be so good), and the other bands (well, except LoG since they suck, but that's when you go for the food/bathroom break) were incredibly tight as well despite shorter setlists. The Anthrax frontman was channelling Bruce pretty hard, running everywhere and still screaming at the top of his lungs, his voice sounded more powerful than ever too.

He is fantastic for a 50 year old right? Haha, why I love Anthrax live, they are still super energetic

Sorry to hear, man. My condolences.

Kawaleria Szatana my fav album form Turbo, but love Last Warrior too.

I was not really familiar with Bethlehem, but this is great and to learn the vocalist from Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult does vocals for them now! Thanks!

I recently (re)discovered Ultha, a German black metal band. I really like the flow in this song, for example:

Also, there's definite tendencies towards the more melancholy / "personal" type of black metal without verging into stupid on-the-nose depressive black metal shit.

Wow, apparently Ghost had to cancel the sold out show in progress in Milwaukee tonight. Someone collapsed in the pit. They performed CPR and took him to the hospital according to this article. They had planned to hit a local record store afterwards for an album release party, but that was cancelled too. I'm seeing from people at the show that the person actually died. at the venue. Some fans are saying the staff prevented a nurse with training from helping and performing CPR earlier and it took a long time for medical professionals to get to him.

Really shitty all around. RIP to that fan and condolences to his family.

Is it fair to assume that 80s' Megadeth is the best possible band Thrash metal could have had? Because the more I listened to Thrash, the more I fell in love with 80s' Megadeth.

Less than 2 weeks to my 2-days Maiden mini-marathon: 06/13 Berlin, 06/16 Florence. It'll be my 13th and 14th time I see them live :D. I'm so tempted to look up the setlist, but I have a pending game with a friend of mine in which we bet a post show beer (well several, actually) on who can guess more songs. Last time with Helloween I lost by 1/3rd of a point (that one was more complicated due to the presence of medleys, which luckily Maiden won't have)
