Since the game's original resolution is 400 x 240 (3DS res), it doesn't scale evenly to 1080p. 1080 ÷ 240 = 4.5. The result is a shimmering or flickering effect when scrolling horizontally. You can really notice it in the very first area in the woods. Look at how the background trees get dimmer while you move and brighter when you stop.

I didn't really think about that. I'm getting the Vita version, which would have the same issue, as it's 544p. It should be fine on the Switch's 720p screen, though, since that's a multiple of 240p.

I got my Switch code too. No email either, just checked through an old one.

Beat the first level. It's even better than I thought it was going to be.

Nightmare final boss is the best boss ever! Holy shit, I can't wait to see if it'll be a boss/secret boss/alternate boss in Ritual of the Night now. Specially his form when you fail the second phase.

The ending was nice too.

EDIT: In fact, I'm looking forward seeing all these bosses in Ritual of the Night. Specially the third boss, since it's the lamest one from this game...
Some might appear, others might not, while Ritual might how new bosses too. It's kinda alluded to that you might fight Gebel and Zangetsu in RotN, and the boss of the ship in that one is Vepar (that giant mermaid-like demon), not Andrealphus (the ship boss in CotM). Though, Bloodless appears in both CotM and RotN.

They could simply show in other areas on RoTN.

Got my EU Vita code, but when I want to redeem it, the store says that this "prepaid card" is not redeemable in this region.
So I probably got a US one, even though it states EU on the backers page. :-/
If only I would have gotten either my Switch or Xbox code as well, I could be playing at least one version now...

More likely you live in one of the countries the game isn't published in.

Since Switch control option came up, I checked to see if one of my 8bitdo adapters had any new firmware. It looks like they updated it a few days ago to fix the incorrectly mapped buttons on the SNES Classic controller. I can now use a SNES Classic controller on Switch through this adapter with the only issue being that the Home button on the Wiimote doesn't work, so I still need a separate controller for that.

Talking about this thing. http://www.8bitdo.com/wireless-usb-adapter/

Did you do Killer Zangetsu yet? I'd be really surprised if you found any stage after the first of that even remotely easy. 2 and 4 kicked my ass.
2 has a bizarre difficulty spike, but otherwise the levels aren't that bad. Only got a game over on level 2 during a Sacrifice Run.

Also, I wonder: How many people are playing on Casual, and how many on Veteran? There are some major differences other than what the game lists. Veteran is much, much, harder. Or perhaps it's casual that's just easy?

Ive played about 5 hours, on my 4rd playthroufh and I haven' even tried Casual mode yet. Really not interested ...

I just wanted to mention this before I forget, maybe it's been mentioned here already, but if you hit the allies with your sword once, twice, or three times (four is fatal), they have different sprites/animations as they get more critical. Cool detail I just noticed playing now.

Redeemed my code today on Switch. Glad I tried the game on Casual first, because this game is kicking my ass, but its definitely fun. The music is awesome and over all its a very well done throwback - now I'm definitely glad I backed Bloodstained.

Finally finished the game. Looks like I just unlocked Ultimate instead of Nightmare lol

And holy fuck Ultimate is cool as hell. I knew these guys we're inspired by Mega Man, but goddamn is that charge slash reminiscent of Mega Man Zero. That along with the dash also from MMZ is making me feel like a fuckin badass.

Just made it to stage 6 on my Sologetsu sacrifice run. This feels SO GOOD. It really is a new oldschool Castlevania. The fact that dying sets you all the way back to the previous checkpoint and takes a life, instead of you losing a single character and starting at the last room makes it even more fun.

Started playing and beat veteran, then played Nightmare up to stage 7. What a fun game! Probably my second favorite behind Celeste so far this year,

I appreciate all the little callbacks to other Castlevanias, too, like how they used the horned toads from Akumajou Densetsu instead of the fleamen from CV3, or how the final winged boss' tower resembles that of the boss of Stage 3 in Bloodlines. My favorite thing about this game, though, is how effortlessly you can switch between all the characters (and how useful each of them are). CV3 had painfully slow swapping.

Can someone please explain how you are supposed to get up the Curse of The Moon tower if all the steps are destroyed? I can't make it to the last boss, the platforms get destroyed and I fall back down to the stairs below. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do other than kill all my characters and reset.

Damn, that's great to hear! I was wondering about this, as I used it with Sonic Mania a while ago but noticed that all of the buttons were incorrectly placed.

You can't go up if the stairs are destroyed. You gotta beat the swarm to the top. I use Zangetsu and just go as fast as I can. Don't hesitate or stop for anything. You have to jump the opposite direction as soon as you land, if you're close to the next platform, etc.

I think you have to suicide into the pit from the stairs screen if the locusts remove all the stairs... That's what my friend and I just did right now. Good luck :/

Honestly I have to give this specific part a -100 out of 100. If you can't make the platforms and fall back down, they should have made it so the platforms reset by going back down one screen. Every other level I've encountered seemed reasonable and fair even for a shitty Vania player like myself, but not this part which leaves you with only one possibility: suicide to reset.

Anyways, I figured out what my problem was. I had my Switch in my dock and was playing with the wireless joycons which were giving me like 1-2 seconds of input lag (jumping late, not jumping at all, etc.). So I simply undocked it for portable mode. Kind of disappointing though, because I want to play this on my TV but the input lag playing it docked is frankly bad.

1-2 seconds? That sounds REALLY bad. You sure you don't mean like 1-2 frames? You should check the options on that TV. I've done that section on a TV and with a wireless controller like 10 times by now.

They should have just made it such that the starting platform also collapses when the sequence starts, so there will be no suicide, just death on failure.

Just beat the game for the first time. I love it! What a great ride. It more than serves its purpose as a hype tool for the main game. Great level and boss design, catchy music, and crisp controls put this one in the hall of fame for retro platformers. I can't wait for the main game!

My EU PSN code is still not working. I don't really understand how they could mess it up that much for backers... And I can't even play the temporary steam version, I get stuck on the first screen, it shows and empty controller and I can't press anything to get passed it.

So this is still a thing. Now I wonder if this will be the same for the main game...
Curse of the Moon is published by Inti Creates. They have no remaining involvement in Ritual of the Night.

I would assume the lessons learned from this debacle are being taken in by Ritual's team, even though they are not the publishers this time.

Beat Sologetsu Sacrifice and unlocked Ultimate and Boss Rush. That was so good. The biggest difficulty spikes in Sologetsu is around 4-6. Once I took down Bloodless, the final two stages felt super duper easy. His dash, double jump, and jump slash actually breaks a lot of the later challenges because if you stop thinking of beating every enemy and just getting through the stage, the extra mobility makes it a huge breeze.

Pretty sure I had to kill my characters

Beat Nightmare mode and started a murderous Zangetsu run. Stage 2 was a nice challenge with Zangetsu alone. Almost had a game over for the first time.

One small complaint I have is the enemies looking pretty goofy for a Castlevania game. Like those enemies at the start and end of Stage 2 that resemble sentient waltzing umbrellas. Others look cool, but out of place, like the Stage 1 boss. Loving the game otherwise.

Yeah, things are looking bleak for the backers in the forgotten european PSN territories. Would not be surprised if we ended up getting it dead last by weeks rather than days.
I think it's weird that they haven't mentioned this at all in any of the official communications, there should be a significant number of backers affected by this who don't read era or otherwise know why their codes aren't working.

Also, it's such a weirdly random collection of countries... I wonder what the cause is.

Enjoyed the first level and the boss fight. Art style thus far feels like a blend of Castlevania and Shovel Knight. Overall, very happy with what I've seen and played thus far. Oh, and music is pretty solid too.

Hard to believe I only learned about this backer extra a few weeks ago and it's already in my hands. Cannot wait for the final product!

I finished Normal mode on Veteran earlier, really enjoyed it. It was a nice challenge too. Did the first stage on Nightmare mode, seems like this is going to take a bit more patience.

Overall, real solid game, nice to play a new 8-bit game styled after Castlevania.

Nightmare is fun and not too tough. The real old-school CV challenge is playing Sologetsu on veteran. Not having any allies changes the flow of death completely, but the power ups Zangetsu gets makes the game super fun too.
