Why even say that? Of course I do. There's a time and place for everything though, and after 5 long years, Sonic needs his own Racer again. Besides, Sega is using its other IPs in other ways now, with Sega Forever, Ages, and of course, the new console compo.
But the amount of times there have been genuine SEGA IP crossovers is way less common than the amount of times Sonic has gotten solo racers. Most of those were already heavily Sonic and Sonic Team-focused too, so it never feels like we even got a proper crossover yet. SEGA Forever and SEGA AGES are not a comparable trade off at all.

It is just unfortunate considering Mario Kart 8 is praised nonstop for having Animal Crossing, Zelda and Splatoon content in it. I know this is not meant to be a sequel to Transformed but it might as well be. Hell, I bet the last level is going to be something comparable to Race of AGES anyways, so I am not expecting it to be purely Sonic like you assume.

Not trying to come off as snippy, just disappointed that SEGA continues to push against IP synergy when companies with similarly popular brands like Capcom make it look easy.

I am one of those people actually against the non-Mario courses in Mario Kart. It's Mario Kart, not Smash Kart.

And yes, there is room in the future for more Sega mashups, but I love Sonic, and you can only fit so many Sonic characters in a mashup game. I mean, we are getting motherfucking OMEGA (right after the other community I frequent had an Omega celebration to boot!): that would not have happened in a mashup game.

And seriously, after 2 comic mashups and 4 Superstars/all stars games, I just want Sonic to stay Sonic, at least for a few years and after at least one more game with just him and his friends and not guests or that pint-sized glory hog from another dimension.

I half expect that little runt to make it into this game, but hey, we can't always get what we want, right?

I think capcoms " success" in regards to brand synergy is more complicated than putting them in the same games, they often don't. If that new racing game did what capcom does most of the time, sonic characters would be wearing outfits from other games. Things like MVC are rarities and even then, people have been and still are complaining about how capcom has been handling is franchise for years. Along with , now tell me if this sounds familiar, complaining about franchises they want back they wont push. The suggestion that capcom makes it looks easy is..revisionist history at best.

Anyways, the new racing game needs this song in it

Y'all talking about some Sonic Racing here? o.o

Cool to see a Sumo dev here. Snake Pass was one of my favorite games from last year and I'm sure this'll be a fantastic title as well.

This clip makes the game look clunky. The problem with early footage for kart racers is also that the footage shown is of sub-par gameplay performance. I know what it looks like to play a Sumo racing game well and this footage does not represent that at all lol. Gonna have to hope the game is playable at E3 and some skilled racers get a chance to record themselves playing.

The amount of dialog is pretty annoying, but it is nice to hear unique voice clips for a change. Seems like SEGA's actually giving this one a decent budget for once thankfully.

That said, I will also totally miss contextually awkward ones like when Ryo Hazuki smashes someone off a course and he calmly says "Sorry, I'm in a hurry".

In the first All-Stars Racing game Sonic would sometimes say "Aren't you worried?" when he passed people and that line was taken from the ending cutscene of his story from 06 where he's talking with Elise. I'm grateful Sega is finally getting the voice actors to do new lines for a Sumo game.

I'm just glad to see drifting/boosting seems largely unchanged. There's few things more satisfying in Transformed than pulling off a level 3 boost.

Proper SEGA crossovers are incredibly rare though, and the stuff you mentioned is all Sonic with some other stuff on the side. Hell, All-Stars Racing had NINE Sonic levels, and most of the rest were still Sonic Team themed. Not cool.

That would honestly be a good reason to swap up the choices for Sonic characters every now and then in the crossovers honestly. Again I only actively think removing Sonic and Tails would have significant impact on sales, but how would you feel if someone like Blaze and like maybe Nack the Weasel replaced Amy and Shadow for a game?

Would you be interested in another situation like Project X Zone 1 and 2 where there were just a ton of SEGA IPs but no Sonic?

Capcom does way more cross promotion than you are giving them credit. Sure, SEGA does stuff like costumes in Miku games sometimes, but never for any of their major releases, whereas Capcom goes out of their way to have crossovers beyond just those fighting games.

Capcom's been putting characters like Morrigan in such a ridiculous amount of games in the past several decades, do you really think many would know or give a shit about someone like her if she has not shown up in like those 100+ cameos over the years? I would argue that someone like Selvaria or Sakura Shinguji would be a great deal more popular than Morrigan if they just kept up with the cameos and figures (they sorta are, but they are not being as active as they could be).

I mean it also counts that in fighting games it makes more sense for players to get way more attached to specific characters than they do in racers but Capcom absolutely does make it look easy simply because they just try more often than SEGA does.

Sonic already had two racers, it just had other cool sega shit to weed out the shitty friends.

If only Shadow wasn't in Transformed, that game could have been pure.

Wait, if it's the Sonic Heroes roster + Team Egg, does that mean Blaze is getting snubbed AGAIN? Ooph.

Well it hasn't been fully confirmed to be 100% the Heroes roster yet, maybe they'll have Team Future with Silver and Blaze on it with... someone else I guess?

15 really does feel a little too short on possible characters at times.

I would not read too much into the Heroes comparisons honestly. That game is older than seemingly half of the Sonic fanbase now and characters like Charmy are not all that popular so they might go a different direction for who teams up with Vector.

There is no way this game is going to be missing Blaze. Sumo wanted her to be playable in past crossovers so I imagine she was one of the first characters they agreed on. Big's a lock too considering how much they like him IMO.

Something I am starting to wonder about though is that this game will likely need more villains to fill out sets of teams. The only evil team being something like Robotnik, Metal Sonic and... uhh... maybe Zavok would not make too much sense.

A finger on the money's paw curls, as a new batch of info & screenshots show that Charmy will not be taking one of the coveted 15 character slots... but neither will Vector or Espio. In their place are Silver & Blaze, joined by surprise addition Mephiles the Dark.

What characters that haven't been confirmed yet are you guys hoping end up being playable the most?

For me, it's Blaze, Espio, and a classic character brought back and given a modern design like Fang or Bark.

The only post Heroes character I want in this game is Blaze, and going by the roster size she's probably a no go.

I thought it being Sonic only might actually make it so more obscure characters like Tikal or Bark could get in but they shot that out the sky early, lol. Now I don't really see the point. I love racers so I'll probably play it anyway though

While I would love to see a modern Fang or Bark, I can't see this happening ever. From what I understand, Sonic Team's position is that those characters only exists on the Classic Universe.

As for the Chaotix, I think they will be all in the game, even if they need to share the same car.

Holy moly SRB2 is still a thing

I remember my dad getting mad at me for downloading a boatload of wad files for that game when I was like 9. Can't believe it's still being updated

I played a ton of Robo Blast 2 online back in 07. The level design for the later levels in the single player asks far too much of the average player but I enjoyed my time with it.

Yeah. The original developers eventually moved on back in, like, 2010? 2009? That was back when SRB2 reached its "1.0" status and was considered done. But since then a new team has been formed out of the community and they've been working toward filling in the gaps left in the design document -- SRB2 "1.0" had to have a handful of levels cut or shortened in order to hit its release date. As I recall there was sort of this feeling of "if we delay 1.0 any longer then it'll never be done," so the cuts were necessary back then

Since then, I think the community has begun to overhaul the game pretty significantly. Levels are now bigger, more detailed, and more complex than they were in the original 1.0 release. (Sometimes for better or worse)

2.2 will be significant because it's a big overhaul of the game's visuals, including finally adding support for sloped surfaces. So ramps and stuff will at last be a possibility, and it looks like every single level in the game has been reworked to incorporate them.

Anyone here remember, or even play Sonic Time Attacked (I'm sure you have, Ryan).

I went back and played it again after a decade of completely forgetting about it. It doesn't play at all like a "genuine" Sonic experience but it was mighty impressive back then. The music is pretty nice too. Sonic's sprite has always bothered me, though.

I was pretty deep into playing Sonic fan games back in the day. Time Attacked was one of the most notable big ones earlier on, but the character sprite was the big thing that turned me off too. Robo Blast 2 holds up the best overall though I think, had some great sessions of that with a friend just as we were becoming besties so I have a lot of good memories there.

It is a shame that so many earlier fan games are so hard to find anything on nowadays. That is probably because their titles were so dull and lacked creativity but because so many really are not worth revisiting in any capacity outside of weird nostalgia.

One of my favorites was weirdly a Breakout clone where the background music was a MIDI of Another One Bites The Dust. Still to this day I strongly consider that a Sonic song, heh.

Yeah, I used to play a lot of fan games but I stopped for the most part when I entered high school (so 2007). I think a big part of why I stopped playing was because the novelty wore off and I was becoming older so shoddily made games weren't something I spent as much time playing (not to say all of the early fan games were bad... just most of them). It didn't help that we really didn't have much in the way of fan games that actually tried to capture "that classic Sonic style gameplay".

The other reason is that I was bullied a lot in middle school (extremely tall, on the spectrum, was a huge Sonic fan, didn't like a lot of what was popular, only had a few friends, etc) so I stopped paying as much attention to the fanbase since I thought it'd be better to distance myself from that sort of stuff. Sad but that's how I viewed it at the time.

I gotta say, the fanbase as a whole has always been a strong part of Sonic due to the sheer passion within it, but I think it's gotten stronger and stronger over the years in terms of fan creations. I think some bad youtubers and reaction culture has hurt the community a bit and split it apart more but otherwise the Sonic fanbase (or at least the "normal" parts of it) is a lot better than many other fanbases I've been a part of.

I always feel like I missed out on such a large period of history in the overall community by not playing or even hearing about these fan games growing up.

I had to replay a bunch of older Sonic fan games recently for a video I'm putting together and I'll say, Sonic Time Attacked was a very pleasant trip down memory lane

A lot of the other older fan games aren't

SRB2, Sonic Megamix, and Before/After the Sequel are the prominent fan projects I remember. I also enjoyed BlazeHedgehog 's Sonic 06 2D, Emerald Ties from qq more and crew, and Super Sonic Knockout.

I thought I'd played Time Attacked but I just checked and I had that mixed up with Time Twisted.

Before and After the Sequel were pretty good, but I feel like Lake's level design maybe gets a little too clunky at times? Like, he has some really interesting ideas, but I think he occasionally prioritizes the quirky concepts over gameplay flow. Still fun games, though, and do I even need to mention the visuals and soundtrack of AtS, holy shit.

I only ran through Time Twisted once, but I thought it was sick. I still need to go back through and get all the Emeralds. I think the main thing that's stopped me is that there are, uh, fourteen different gems to collect and I only even found a few of the giant rings. The level design had the smoothness and cohesion I felt BtS and AtS lacked though, and I love pretty much everything about the presentation.

I think it's a bummer the game is Sonic only but that's mostly because I think all the characters from SA2 onward kind of suck.

Both Before and After the Sequel had great art and absurdly good music but the actually controls were really off and the level design left a hell of a lot to be desired. It's still worth experiencing just for the presentation aspects though.

Robo Blast 2, Sonic R, and S3&K Collection were my bread and butter back in the day on PC.

Also I never really gave Sonic Drift the time of day before but it's actually pretty fun even if there's not much there.

I liked to play around a bunch of hacks, even visited the Sonic Retro forums just to get them. But I was never into fan games.
