Anthony Bourdain is the reason I have traveled outside the United States and the reason I started cooking

The man had his demons but this is very sad

Great work DirtyLarry. Out of curiosity how long did that take you to finish?
Thank you (and everyone else who left a kind word). It is very much appreciated.

90 minutes of actual execution with about 30 minutes of just visualizing what colors I thought would be appropriate, etc. etc.. So 2 hours total.

I try to do these portraits as quickly as possible and also not rely on the fact I can fine tune things since it is digital. I purposely leave mistakes, keep things loose, etc. etc. in an effort to keep it as traditional looking as possible as that is where my background is. I also try really hard not to not overthink things and just let it happen. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it does not (a lot of times it does not haha). Here is the link to my Behance portfolio where you can basically see the evolution of this portrait style itself if you start at the bottom of the page and work up from there. I actually have done quite a lot of tribute illustrations (unfortunately) as it helps me stick to the keep it loose approach especially if I want to keep things timely. I am always more than happy to discuss art with anyone so if you have any follow up questions or just want to shoot the shit about art feel free to send me a message. Absolutely.

This is really sad. I just started watching Parts Unknown about a month ago, watching one or two episodes each evening. Might give it a break before watching any farther knowing what happened.

When both Iggy Pop and a former President mourn your passing, you lived an amazing life. He'll always be a hero of mine.

I think the one thing I can take away from all of the outpouring is really the diversity of the people that have come out to give their regards to this man.

So many different people, from so many different parts of the world, and so many different stories.

Even in his passing, he is still telling us stories, but this time it's stories about the man through the eyes of his friends and loved ones.

RIP Anthony Bourdain.

I never really saw a lot of Bourdain's work, but as someone with a good friend who was close to him, I'll always remember him through his stories of Anthony. He seemed like an incredible person.

Wow, fuck. Incredibly sad.

He was literally an inspiration to me. My partner and I are figuring out our next steps and trying to figure out how to make the TV show we've been dreaming about making, and we're basically planning to use the No Reservations / Parts Unknown format. He was a great broadcaster and host, and his book was awesome as well. Shit, man.

No, no, please no. :(

My family fell in love with him when my dad discovered No Reservations back in 2005 with the Vietnam episode and we have been following him on his tv food adventures ever since.

Gah, I don't have the heart yet to tell my father, Im already teary eyed and I would hate to see his 72 year old heart break.

Watching him do what he wanted to do is one of the bigger reasons I decided to go back to school and get into the field I had always wanted to. Ironically, from being a line cook/dishwasher/kitchen worker and into design. Crushing news, find peace my dude.

The world's lost a wry, worldly, and deeply human storyteller. I've followed his work ever since his show A Cook's Tour. RIP.

Wow. R.I.P

Loved watching his shows when they were on the Travel Channel. Never really bothered after he went to CNN.

So, as someone who has never seen an episode or read a book...

Where do I start? And where to start it (service)?

If you have a long commute and listen to podcasts, I highly recommend his two restaurant books in audiobook form with him narrating:

Start with Kitchen Confidential - https://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Mem...46-2586073224ad&pf_rd_r=QSVR5KGHVQ5KPD2KZ92H&

And then its sequel Medium Raw - https://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Mem...46-2586073224ad&pf_rd_r=65FVESEYDR40DNGN4VDS&

His two primary shows were

No Reservations from the Travel Channel which I cannot find streaming in the USA but is available for purchase.

and

Parts Unknown from CNN which has 8 seasons streaming on Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/70304979 - just scroll through the episode descriptions and find the ones that sound interesting to you based on the location or the food. You will quickly get sucked in and be binge watching.

Man, holy shit. Saw the news on my phone just now as I was getting up - that's insane. Was literally just watching an episode of Parts Unknown on CNN a few days ago. RIP to him, he lived an incredible life & has seen many incredible sights. I can only hope to explore a fraction of the world that's he's seen in my lifetime.

Heard this on the way to work from NPR, the moment I heard tv show and chief, I thought "oh no" and there it was. The fact that he s the only celeberity cheif I ve actually followed at all says a lot.

Christ I wonder what happened?

Don't know if Cook's Tour is streaming anywhere. It's another show of his to check out from right after Kitchen Confidential became big. Aired on the Food Network in the early 2000s so it's a bit cleaner than his other stuff. But also raw in that he's just figuring out his travel show voice. And being from the early 2000s, it's a great time capsule for that time period.

This upsets me, because I liked him and it's sad to see someone so alive and interesting just give up and go away.

But, if you'll permit me a more selfish reason, it also upsets me because he was rich as hell, he was much beloved, he was dating a beautiful Italian movie star nearly 20 years younger than him, and his job was to travel around the world, do fun things, meet cool people and eat great food. If he gave up and gave into his demons what the Hell am I holding out for?

I guess a more positive takeaway is that getting the things you want won't fix you. They just cover it up. You need to work on fixing the underlying problems with yourself.

Totally agree. The audiobooks are FABULOUS! Great for a long car ride or commute.
