The problem I have with this is it just further exasperates the problem we are currently having with the kitchification of certain genres of metal, like death metal.

So her job sucks so she kareokes to death metal?

It's 'funny' because it's a super deformed super cute cartoon cat or fox or whatever, but death metal is scary for reasons we have no idea, nor can we remember how or why this imagery is a thing, it's just, you know, that thing you see, the news shows it, metal is all scary and demons and blood, because they like war and murder and corporate greed, cause their evil right? Thats what metals for right? I mean it must be, thats why it looks like that and what the media says. But the show looks cute and cuddly! ha ha!!! Low hanging Juxtaposition! Everybody laugh!!!
Not to echo what's already been said too much, but give the show a chance before criticizing it. It does pretty much the exact oposite of what you described.

Metal isn't used as a joke or a punchline here. It's a coping mechanism; and quite frankly one that is totally realistic. One of the biggest appeals of metal for me has always been that I can sing along with it and feel a genuine anxiety/tension release while I'm doing it. The same applies here. It's her way of balancing out after a day of being underappreciated and essentially hating what her life's become.

That said, the metal used is about as baseline as it gets. I don't know what bands you like (though based on responses in some passed threads, I gather that you've listened to Sabaton at the very least) but I'd absolutely say don't go into this expecting music that'll blow you away. Metalocalypse is still the best show for that sort of thing...

So is this where I get to talk about how Resasuke did nothing wrong?

Clearly Resasuke has serious societal development issues. He can't pick up on social cues, he seems to have trouble relating to people, and he clearly spends a lot of time stuck in his own head. He only even goes to singles' night because he's dragged there by his coworkers who never show any indication that they even really like him, and then gets ignored for a huge chunk of the night. He and Retsuko only even bond because neither of them are socially aggressive enough to talk over the bar, and he only helped take care of her drunk self because he was the only one who wasn't enough of a drunk jerk to not check up on someone who seemed to need help. The only reason he even returned her advances (or even found out she was making any at all) was due to the constant goading of one of his co-workers who talked him into doing a bunch of things that would never have occurred to him to do.

Retsuko read a TON into him and their relationship that just wasn't there at all, and the only time he ever really deceived her was when he was taking advice from someone who was also assuming a bunch of shit that wasn't true. They were just completely incompatible with each other to the point that they were barely even able to communicate with each other. Neither of them was really in the wrong, they were just an incredibly poor fit and the relationship went as well as it possibly could have, which in this case was I guess three dates and then they part their separate ways.

Resasuke is just a kinda weird guy who's happy to live in his own head and I just hope he can hold onto his job well enough that he doesn't lose his cute plant apartment.

I posted it before, but I'm pretty sure Resasuke had Asperger's. He displays a lot of the common signs of it.

Just finished this. What an amazing series, I hope we get a second season.

Washimi is great, I love how she doesn't tolerate the president's shit at all.

I also think Ton is grooming Retsuko for management, even if it's in a kind of shitty way. The conversation he gave her in the tea room during the last episode was actually kind of deep and made me think about past shitty friendships/relationships where I gave more than I got back in return.

Just finished binge-watching this over the week-end, and it's great. My SO and I both loved it (and we're both heavily into metal too, no pun intended).

Have you seen the show, because I don't know what you're talking about? I love metal, been listening to it for over 2 decades, and there's no "kitchification" going on or whatever. (And hey the riffs are pretty good even!)

Finally sat down and watched through this, found it quite enjoyable.

It has a very different flavor from the one minute shorts, being more about the characters themselves than just Retsuko existing and reacting to everyone's bullshit. Most of everyone's personalities seemed a bit more...aggressive, too, but I guess that makes it more entertaining? They'd probably need more time to flesh people out if everyone had the same exact characterization.

The English dub was great, though I still don't agree with leaving everyone's names in "Japanese", even if it dooooooes technically take place in Japan. I was kind of disappointed to find out most of the Japanese cast was changed :(

I'd still recommend checking the shorts out for anyone who liked this. It's different enough and has plenty of great moments that weren't adapted here. Plus all of the other characters that we may or may not see if Netflix gets more episodes.

Finished the show. I had been limiting myself to 3 eps a day because there isn't much and I really like it.

I do feel like the last two episodes could have been stronger as a close for the season but if there is a season 2 then I'll be very happy.

If they do a season 2 I'd like to see some of the supporting cast explored more. Some B stories and such.

Incidentally, the new season of The Toys That Made Us has an episode about Hello Kitty/Sanrio that was interesting after watching this show.

I haven't been to a Hot Topic in ages. This seems like the kind of license that would flourish there.

Watched the first 5 episodes with my mother tonight and we both were rolling with laughter. My mother especially appreciates how "true to life" as she puts it as the inner workings of an office really are. Can't wait to finish it tomorrow.

Is this show really that good? I keep seeing gifs of it on Twitter.

Also, should I watch sub or dub?

One of the best, all around (not only anime or cartoon) that Netflix has put out this year. And watch the subbed one, if you dont mind. The character voices are so good.

EDIT: OH FUCK SEASON 2 HYPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Yes.

The Japanese voice acting is stellar across the board, and most importantly the PROTEIN sounds a lot funnier with a Japanese intonation.

It really is. And watch both; they're two totally different experiences thanks to how the localization worked out. Great voice acting in the dub, better writing in the sub.

Can't wait to see what they wind up doing with season 2 now.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I figured this was the closest thing to an OT.

So, I'm visiting my mom here in New Zealand and thought I'd show her Aggretsuko and did they... change Washimi and Gori's introduction line? Originally Gori talks about their "baddest bitch" walk. But it's changed to "meanest girl" Could this be a regional thing or did they change it for all regions?

I always pass this over when I'm using Netflix. Had no idea what it was about. Will add to my watch list now.

Interesting, I'll look on the US version when I get the chance to see if they changed it. If I had to guess though, they may have adjusted the line since they likely don't want them to refer to themselves as "bitches" on a show like this since it's generally considered derogatory towards females.

Edit: the US dub uses "Our take-no-prisoners walk" in the first episode. I feel like they did used to say "baddest bitch walk", but now I'm not sure of this is the mandela effect or maybe they used it in another episode.

Oof, my bad I remembered incorrectly. Yeah, it was totally baddest bitch in the room before though.
