Indeed and people have the right to not like complete photorealism, it's a matter of taste.
I never said that people can't dislike it. Only explaining why it's so different in the first place. Frankly I prefer this level of fidelity and art direction compared to what was seen in DMC4. Like universe wise it's still the same tone but rendered with modern tech:

I love that they're using mo-cap or whatever for the character performances.

The female character and Nero look ridiculously good. Especially the facial animations for the female character.

i dont really know how to feel. i feel like i might warm up to it at some point, its just such a weird turn from previously established DMC. But hearing some of the more kooky antics in the trailer makes me more relieved

I really like the look of Danero, great mash up of DmC and the old school DMC design.

Never understood the hate for DmC, but I guess I'm in the minority.

Not really, the series always had a ditinctive gothic feel in the architecture and was usually way more colorful.

This was the norm, except maybe DMC2, but is fucking DMC2....

"Distinctive gothic" feel, huh? None of the architecture in 1 is similar to the architecture in 3 is similar to the architecture in 4. They have gothic elements, and the first is very gothic, but 4 went for a very obvious art nouveau look. 3 went for babylonian. You're simply not correct. It would have been more accurate to say they all had strong anime elements to the art style and those are now removed.

If anything the ruined/seedy streets in this are closer to 3 and 1 (opening cutscene) and 2 and 4.

Watching the trailer again, I'm liking the look of the combat, but the aesthetic style they went with is still a little off-putting

The trailer and direction actually has me a bit worried about the Resident 2 remake.

I love photorealism to a certain extent. DMC isn't a franchise where I think how I would love to see photo realistic models.

Also, I didn't play DMC4 much, but why does Nero strongly resemble Dante from DmC?

Nero can't regrow limbs?
I mean,we never saw dante or vergil lose a limb before but they can definitely heal.
Yeah I'm pretty sure that health regeneration is actually a canon ability for Dante and Vergil, Dante gets stabbed in the torso so many times in cutscenes and lives to tell about it. That said, Nero is 1/4 demon, so it's not surprising that he doesn't as powerful as Dante and Vergil.

You're not wrong. I still think this looks like shit, though. It doesn't look stylish, it looks like they just tried to recreate the visual style Ninja Theory used for DmC but forgot that the DmC art style doesn't look like Devil May Cry.

The gothic horror-inspired art is just replaced by generic edgy nonsense.
Its weird because DmCs artstyle in its level design is actually pretty good. Was hoping 5 would take the gothic architecture into something more memorable. Blend it with demon/angel stuff.

The confidence it must take to have Devil May Cry 5 evoke both DMC4 and dmc, two games that killed the series, is encouraging. I would have definitely expected them to play it safe, another prequel with Dante for instance, but clearly they're making the game they want to make.

DMC4 was best selling DMC game
It did not help kill anything

Wait a second...

Is Nero using his own arm as a ridable rocket?

Devil-May-Cry-5_2018_06-10-18_014.jpg

How can you hate on this game. How can you.
He's got so much style and he's got the young attitude to pull it off. Some comments are reminding me a lot of the DMC4 comments when Nero was first shown. He's doing the damn thing.

I wonder why Nero is taking the mantle of Devil May Cry over his uncle ? Has Dante been missing for years for some reason ?

because they are not emulating western people usually
It's nothing to doing with "western" people, whatever that means. They typically don't look like natural humans at all, it's usually a stylization approach.
Sometimes I find it awkward as hell if the art direction is inconsistent or the game doesn't push that boundary on a technical level.

I don't really dislike DmC's environmental art style, yeah. I think it was a cool idea, just not a good fit for this series, essentially.

I wanted to see crazy over-the-top horror-adjacent art for DMC5.

Not just that, you got your info wrong about Sony holding back a PSX announcement when it ended up getting revealed in a Microsoft conference, and your Unreal Engine 4 info was wrong too.

No offense man, I know you like the games and all, but your source lied to you.
Yeah, you are right and I'll make a post about that later once the thread slows down a bit.

Right now it's just moving too fast.

I mean, Joel will probably look different in TLOU2 as a result of the closer push to photorealism. It's not inherently a problem unless you were literally expecting a sequel coming out 10 years later to still retain anime art direction for the models.
dmc.jpg

I don't even hate the new direction that much but why is expecting and anime ass series to maintain an anime style such a reach?

Or all games just expected to become photorealistic? Because I really hope Atlus doesn't get that memo if it is.

Alright, I'm hyped for this now. I can survive Dante's new face. I'm gonna be seeing his back most of the time during gameplay anyway.

Dante and Vergil are twin brothers of a legendary demon named Sparda. They don't get along well.

Nero is the son of Vergil. They don't get along well.

You launch demons into the air and then keep them aloft by shooting them with guns.

You are now fully up to speed for DMC5 (DMC is not a story-heavy series :P).

Thanks! :D

This is going to be a great game, but that artstyle... I was really worried when I thought for a second that this was DmC 2.

You know what, I won't be shitting up every thread about this game, a lot of people are excited. Hope you guys have a lot of fun.

I'm out.

You could try and discuss it with other old timey DMC fans who definitly should have different priorities than normal people. Like what do you think people are most excited about?

After watching the trailer again, I still really dig that theme. Surfing the rocket arm is some real ass DMC shit that I missed.

This line from the Capcom blog should be put in the first post. People think that Nero will be the only playable character. This was his trailer, we havnt seen dantes and the third characters trailer yet.

Utterly Insane Action

However, Nero is not alone in this fight. Our gameplay announcement trailer above focuses on Nero and his new set of tricks, but Devil May Cry 5 will feature 3 playable characters, with their own unique over-the-top playstyles and flair.

To complete my streak of negative reactions to all the reveals (sorry but I just didn't connect to any of it), this reveal was also disappointing. Didn't like the face they chose, didn't like the dark-techno direction instead of the gothic, and overall the action seemed pretty standard. The female character was the only interesting bit. Hope it gets shown better in another context.
