They already confirmed that it's a Devil May Cry 4 sequel in their official blogs, not to mention that they joked some decade ago that "DMC2 was set in the very far future so it'll never have any sequel" aka they don't think it exists within the continuity.
Years after DMC4 can still be after DMC2, they just won't actually say it cause DMC2 is Voldemort

Not even gonna lie, my heart sank for a minute when I saw the start of the trailer and thought they were continuing along with the DmC line of games. But whatever, I've watched this trailer like twenty times now and will probably watch several dozen more before the night is over. Couldn't be more hyped to learn more.

Of course it's him. Look at any of the screencaps, look at the face and the sleeve under the same cloak he had in the DMC4SE opening.

That's like saying "we don't know that's Dante" at the guy on the demon bike at the end of the trailer.

I know people are busy looking at the screen with some of his face but you can easily see it's him by his boots in the full body shot. Those are Vergil's classic boots.

I just gotta say
This was the perfect first post for the reveal trailer, no matter how annoying this meme as gotten, it's still a perfect fit for a DMC5 reveal trailer first post.

Bravo, sir.

People finally getting the game they wanted, and they start bitching about it without even playing it. Come on, people! This game is gonna fucking rock! Be fucking patient for once, Jesus.

So did anyone here have trouble recognizing Nero at first? As soon as I saw the first brief flash of him, I knew it was him but looking at a lot of reactions on Youtube people kept thinking it was Dante or Vergil even after he revved his sword.

Some people didn't realize it was a DMC5 trailer until the end or even after.

Weirdos.

While i did recognized him, the more realistic style plus bionic arm made me think of a DmC 2 first.

I was so relieved when i saw that 5 in the logo.

Surprised at the hate, I really dug the style and everything despite the characters themselves looking less stylized than dmc1-4. Facial capture is great, combat looks like classic Itsuno and the cutscene choreography feels classic too. Can't wait!

Alright guys this is what you have been waiting. Dahbomb's first ever impressions of DMC5/DMCV (hey there is a V in there!).

Style/Visuals:

I will be honest initially I was turned off by the style. I didn't even know what I was watching at the start and thought Capcom was pulling a hoax on me with the start. But once the game play came out I knew this wasnt a hoax and this was actually DMC5. The hyper realistic style threw me very off and the facial animations veer into uncanny territory. Nero/Dante etc don't really look like their counterparts because of it especially Nero (but mostly because of the new hair cut). I didn't like it at first and I think I still don't like it but I know why they did it and it makes sense.

They are going for a DmC + DMC mix here, to get all camps in. It is a hyper realistic look at the old universe so its like a blend of the two series. It's so realistic that my brain couldn't really process it all it's going to take some time getting used to it. It's also very dark in colors for most of the areas although the colorful and bright areas are fine. When it's game play it definitely looks like DMC though. And this all makes sense because this uses the maximum power of the RE engine and it shows... putting my opinions on the realistic style aside, the graphics on a technical look INSANE to me. The cutscenes look like CG quality stuff to me (again I am not a graphics person) and the game play looks stellar too. AND this is confirmed to be 60FPS. This is one of the best 60FPS looking games out there free. In no way this feels like Capcom skimped out on budget or time, the effort and technical prowess is on full display. So make no mistake, this is a visual powerhouse of a game and people who like this style will have a treat. For someone like me, it's going to take some time getting used to just like with DmC although this doesn't feel as garish as DmC (yet at least).

Despite the tone of the trailer being very fun and over the top, there is a very dark veneer over everything. Makes everything look fairly gritty. Lots of blood and gore in the trailer, already more than any DMC game yet. More swearing too, again going with the whole DmC/DMC mix here. I am curious as to how they balance this tone out. The colors are definitely very subdued, Nero is wearing the same outfit from DMC4 but it doesn't even look the same because the colors are so muted and dark.

Characters:

Only 3 characters were really shown. The new female character technically looks amazing and design is fine too but when she is grimacing it goes very much into uncanny valley. Not a fan of Nero's new hair cut, makes him look like that dude from Scalebound. They should have gone with more of a unique hair cut. Dante looks.... kind of a hobo to be honest. Dirty teeth, unshaven face, messy hair... like dude just doesn't give a fuck anymore. Some people think this is actually Dante coming back from DMC2's Hell on a bike but this is very clearly not the same bike, it's some demonic tech fused bike looks pretty cool. There are clear characteristics of the characters from older games but the facial expressions really distract you in this, the uncanny valley is really in effect here because of the hyper realistic look.

Story/Time period/Setting:

This is very clear after DMC4 only it's far after DMC4, feels like almost 10 years. Nero seems a lot older and Dante seems legit old man status. A lot of fans are already thinking that this is beyond even DMC2 but we will have to see. Giant demon invasion going on in this, I heard rumors about this too.

I personally don't really like the heavy city landscape, we saw enough of it in DMC4 and in DmC. I want to see more gothic structures like in DMC1/DMC3. Hopefully this is just the first few stages, I don't think much was shown in this trailer in terms of locations and such.

The big story beat here is that someone assaults Nero, rips off his arm and takes it with him. Everyone and their grandmother is guessing that the cloaked figure is in fact Vergil. What's more curious is that the 3rd playable character (yes the game has 3 playable characters, Nero, Dante and some new guy) seems to be brand new... black hair looks very much like Noctis from FFXV. Curious to see what that new guy is all about. Nero mentioned Kyrie in the trailer but we don't actually see her, the other female character seems to be Nero's arm mechanic since he no longer has an arm of his own.

The villain looks quite menacing, some people think its Mundus returning but it's hard to say. The logo is quite nice, I was expecting the silhouette of a character like it is in other DMC games but its like angel wings making a giant V. They honestly should just drop the 5 completely and keep the logo, would make it look a lot better.

Enemy Designs:

Enemy design felt very traditional/Western, something you would see more in DmC/Dante's Inferno than in a DMC game, which has more stylized enemies. However, even in that trailer we got glimpses of returning DMC enemies like Assaults/Blades and the Hell enemies from DMC3 (look in the back on the left):

eea3705864dcd31163d582d71198d3a4.jpg

There were a couple of bosses shown but again, they are lacking the flair and stylized look of previous DMC bosses. I can't say I am a fan of it so I am hoping that mechanically they deliver. The big boss guy looks very cool though. For most of the initial trailer I actually thought this was some RE game LOL!

Game Play:

There wasn't much I could gather from the game play in this. Definitely some new mechanics were shown like a super counter, a slow down mechanic, some new type of dodge and a lot of new functionality of the new mechanical arm. There was definitely a lot of reusage of animations from DMC4 for Nero, including his Frost/Assault throwing animation, his buster shots, his sword swings, High Roller etc. So without a doubt you are playing an evolved Nero from DMC4 in terms of mechanics. Of course this is not even a fraction of what we can expect down the line especially with the other two playable characters. I will be discussing with some DMC fans about the game play clips we have seen, there is some juice in there. But it's made by Itsuno and co, it's 60FPS, it's DMC... enough said to be honest. Nothing in the trailer game play wise felt wack to me, except for maybe that rocket punch move.

Itsuno's Promise:

Most of you guys don't know Hideaki Itsuno as he is not a big public appearing person. He has made some of Capcom's best games yet he is never boastful about it or shows any form of ego, he is quite humble. He doesn't appear on stages for conferences, this is in fact his FIRST TIME. I have always wanted that for a DMC5 reveal that he would come on stage and he did and I am SSOO HAPPY that it happened. And what he said moved me... this is the best action game that Capcom has ever made and this is the best GAME that Itsuno has ever made. He is THAT confident in this product that he would go on the stage to declare to the world... if you are a DMC fan then this is a BIG deal because you know the implications. He also said 4 years and that's the longest time a DMC game has been in development for... and it shows in the visuals. Game looks very polished and high end, I am very glad that the game is getting the budget, time and talent that it deserves.

Closing: I felt more confused than hyped after watching the DMC5 trailer. It wasn't what I was expecting and I guess that's... good? Itsuno is keeping us fans guessing and it really does feel like this new DMC game is separating itself from DMC4. This is most definitely not DMC4.5. This is not DmC2. This is DMC5. All DMC games kinda look different from each other so this was to be expected to some capacity. The graphics on display are clearly very advanced and I am very relieved that the game has gotten proper budget and time, as that was one of my main concerns going in. Itsuno has given us the assurance that this game will be the business so I will have to put my faith in him one more time. I am obviously there day 1 and as are most hardcore fans but it seems like they are trying to grab a bigger audience still (especially the DmC crowd) and that's good. Hopefully this grows the franchise even more.

Also one more thing:

fas.png

Corrupted "Punished' Vergil punishing the fuck out of Nero and ripping of his arm is going to be one hell of a way to start this game off! And you already know he is here for dat Yamato.

The enemy design looks wildly different from DmC. That was mainly about austere designs focused around ceramic facemasks. This looks more like Ghouls n' Goblins, it's the one retrograde step.

This feels... influenced by No More Heroes? Travis is definately a "real life" parody of the Dante archetype. NMH barely released before Devil May Cry 4 and I think after series that you can't really do character action without acknowledging the absurdity of the tropes. The way this handles women looks better than DMC 4 and Dante as a biker hobo who looks like he just needs some time on your couch while he gets back on his feet is the logical progression of the character into his middle age. I hope they have more of a self-deprecating tone this time around.

The first few shots of Nero can very easily be confused with DmC Dante:

That and this is the second time that a Devil May Cry title has looks 21st century modern compared to the vague timeline of the older titles.
The second he opened his mouth, it was obvious it was Nero. Also his face looks exactly like in DMC 4, only with short hair.

Yeah, to be honest, I won't lie, I was honestly expecting the game to be titled DmC 2 prior to the official name being revealed. I'm happy to see that I wasn't alone in that regard so I don't feel too silly :P

The more I watch the trailer the more I like.

Initial reaction had me confused and scared tho. I really thought they were going to go for DmC2

So guys, about Dante's face, does it look sort of weird because it's still a work in progress or is that their final product? He looks like almost elderly!
I don't think much time passed between DMC4 and DMC5 to have aged him that much, seems odd, or maybe it's just me.

I am watching a lot of video reactions to this trailer and 3 things pop up in all of them.

*People don't know that the main character that is being shown is Nero or new DmC Dante.
*They don't know if its original universe or DmC universe.
*Hardly anyone makes that connection that Nero is getting fucked up by Vergil.

You definitely weren't alone. His character model looks a lot like DmC Donte. In DMC 4 Nero looked almost EXACTLY like Dante albeit younger, far to close to him to be honest. So While I'm glad they changed him up, it was quite jarring at first.

Quite the opposite, I think a long time passed between 4 and 5. I'm definitely on the team that thinks 5 happens after 2 which is a looooong time in the future, so it's been a while since 4.
