how does the contraption in Sen's Fortress keep getting reset even after I move the switch to a different position?...it should stay where I set it...
I'm not sure, but I think there's an invisible switch located somewhere in the rooms between the first two lanes you come across. I'm talking about the one which you enter through a fog wall, has a small corridor in the middle connecting two larger rooms and contains one serpent soldier. There's a trap switch in the middle which causes you to get shot in the back.

Every time I have manually adjusted the ball trajectory and go through those rooms, it resets.

I personally like not being able to warp at the beginning. Makes going into places like Blighttown or the Catacombs feel like a journey since you can't simply warp out; you have to plan your exit. It also creates the interesting scenario of not necessarily wanting to rest at a given bonfire at times since it means you can't Homeward bone your way out if you do (Ashen Lake for instance).

That moment when you finally see the light after trekking through what feels like hell is sublime. The latter games did lose something by allowing you to warp at the beginning. I sort of understand why they did it but it's a matter of drawing the line between convenience and the emotions a game can elicit by putting you in difficult circumstances.

It's a tradeoff in the end and I see why some people might be annoyed by it. But Dark Souls world design doesn't work with warpable bonfires from the start. It's part of its gameplay for better or worse. Lordran is etched in my mind like no game world ever has and I can't say the same thing about, say, DS2. DS2 feels like a bunch of Megaman levels I just warp in and out of.

Was watching some guy stream this yesterday and getting absolutely wrecked in the Depths because he couldnt get to the bonfire and had to redo from Firelink every single time.

Which made me remember my first playthrough of the game. That bonfire is an absolute bitch. The area is confusing as fuck. There are enemies that do poison and curse damage everywhere. And you cant even run past enemies easily because of the tiny corridors and confusing lay out. And the bonfire is behind a door so its actually really easy to miss. Its is absolutely fucking brutal.

First timers, getting to which bonfire has been your toughest time?

Dark Souls: may lead to alcoholism

Those fucking skeletons are some of the biggest assholes in all of gaming. They shouldve come up with a Father G style unique item for them in the form of a stick you jam in their spokes.

Edit: Shit wait...they wheel themselves, sticks won't even work :/
LMAO It's such a depressing feeling. But it's funny how quickly you forget once you play for a little while longer. It's one of the few games I'll keep playing despite the progression loss.

I remember running around forever in New Londo looking for the bonfire... until I discovered much later that there wasn't one. LOL

It's magic. Game cheats. lol

I was a phantom with my friend the other day, and I went ahead and stuck around the lever to control it so he could loot areas without the boulder trap activating. I saw the damn switch move by itself all the time, had to mash X to try to reset it to protect him. It was ridiculous.

Is going through Blighttown the back way via Valley of the Drakes easier than going through the front via the Depths? I just got back there for the first time in years and forgot how obnoxious it is trying to reach that first bonfire. Thinking going in the back way and just wrecking Quelaag's face and peacing out would be the best way.

Yes very. I usually get the ember from the start of th depths and then go the back way. Sometimes I may go and kill the gaping dragon and still come up and go the back way. Lol

Yep, there's hidden switches that reset it. I've walked past certain hallways and heard them being flipped on the wall.

Beat the Remaster for the first time last night.
Other than some weird glitches and the cleaner aspect of the graphics that looses some of the original's charm, this is a solid port.
It's so good to go back to this game.

Here are my stats when I've beaten the final boss:

I'm pretty happy with my Dunbine cosplay. It even has the Aura.

Does the Berenike Knight in Sen's no longer respawn? I killed it on the way to Ricard, then boned out and went to the boss, afterwards I noticed it wasn't there.

My current build is shieldless and using weapons I usually wouldn't touch - Curved swords. I started with the Scimitar (yuck) and moved on to the Server which has to have one of the worst movesets of any weapon, so slow and delayed. The running attack isn't bad. I've been killing all the NPCs so I won't be tempted to use any magic and dropping every item, so old faithfuls like Grass Crest Shield are gone for good.

Never played the original but were those ragdoll bodies as ridiculous as in this remaster? Literally had to drag one of those creatures through half of blighttown lol.

Weird. I definately boned out because I upgraded my weapon before the boss. Will recheck when next plodding through Sen's.

Yes. People love the ragdolls, they got rid of them in DS2 and people complained so they brought them back in 3!

Strategy for the archers?? (I only 2-hand, no shield)
Increase your poise (with Wolf Ring for example). It makes fighting the Silver Knights much easier.
Using a shield is a bad idea here because you usually get pushed back and fall to your death. On the other hand, when you poise through a hit, you don't get pushed back.

Ornstein and Smough can fuck right off.

Please do not give any beginner tips and advice. I'm 99% sure there is nothing I don't already know about this fight.

I know how to win this thing, but I can't.

I feel like calling this fight bullshit with glitching Ornstein's glide and weird hitbox issues but I know it's just me being shit.

I don't know. Maybe it's an age thing, or becoming a father with a lot less time for video games thing, or something else that's making me plateau with this fight.

I feel like I have to mention I did plat Bloodborne solo and beat DS III and nothing there was a roadblock like these idiots. So it's not "these games are not for you" thing.

Or I don't know. Maybe I am done with this shit.

Bed of Souls was pure shit. And this is with me knowing how to deal with the boss from a video. Lanky arms mcgee featuring black hole gravitational pull into the pit.

I've only got Seethe left to go. I kinda cracked and looked at maps during Tomb of the Giants (plus fuck doing that area without the Sunlight Maggot).

DS2 question! So I picked up Scholar when it was 75% off. I assume its a little more refined than DS1, but are the secrets still jank and obscure? I mean I wouldn't have found Undead Asylum, The Great Hollow by myself (hiding the wall behind a chest), or the armour vendor where you pretty much walk on air around a bridge to get to.

Berenike Knight did respawn. Dunno what that was about, just a glitch or something I guess.

There are secrets, but DS2 is far more linear than DS1. It plays out kind of like DS1 post-Lord Vessel, not just because of warping from the start, but that the game branches out in several linear paths. There's no 'wow' moments with looping shortcuts or anything. Also the combat and character control engine is far more stiff and frustrating. The game still has some great moments, but the main engine is a step back that was corrected with DS3.

DS2 is actually less refined than the first in most respects. More idiosyncrasies in stats, worse controls, frustrating enemy placements. There are a few secrets that you might need to look up, but it's a longer, more linear game with fewer chances to get lost, in my opinion. There's a hidden boss that you might need to look up after a first playthrough, and a few secret areas, but the game can be a slog after the half-way point because all paths converge to one. Luckily there are some QOL improvements like respecs, more spells, and more useful enchantments for your weapons so you can power through just about anything with patience. I don't want to color your expectations too much, but it's a divisive game for a reason (I still enjoy it, though).

It's an awful game with random obscure shit and the level design is trash. Not to mention shit like the enemies doing full 180 degree turns on heavy attacks and having projectiles like throwing knives that have a slight tracking on them. There's a lot of other bad design like that too in the second game. I don't like it at all.

Dark Souls 2 is a great game. It's different but the mechanics are solid and in terms of unknowable secrets without looking them up, I would say Dark Souls 1 has many more. Most things in Dark Souls 2 can be found through exploration, etc. many here will tell you it's "trash" but the pvp is probably the best in series, in my opinion. The story is decent and some of the bosses are great. The DLC areas are excellent as well.

I beat these fuckers yesterday so I know how you're feeling. I feel like I took the "easy" way out though as I
turned human and summoned the npc which makes this fight so much more easier

My character build is pretty bad though. I feel like once I optimize my build once I beat the game on a new character, i'll do it the man's way since my weapon (black knight sword) isn't so great since it's so slow

So, when the first trailer dropped I was not loving the prospect of this remaster. From what I could tell, it wasn't going to be much of an improvement and whatever changes that did exist might be downgrades, such as the lighting. I feared the worst.

And twenty minutes ago I just platinumed Dark Souls Remastered (PS4 regular).

If it wasn't clear, I'm actually very pleased with the remaster. It's not perfect, but my only complaint at this point is that in a few specific areas the lighting definitely misses out on the atmosphere of the original [places like the Fair Lady's bonfire area, the painted world, the part of undead parish on the outside with the balder knights and bridge, etc]. But the lighting is actually not a disaster like I was expecting, and about 90-95% of the charm of the original is preserved in my opinion. Beyond that, the 60fps or whatever other tweaks to the combat occasionally make the game a little too smooth for my liking, but for the most part it feels pretty faithful.

I love that Blighttown doesn't feel like it's going to crash any second, as it did a few times on my PS3 [the only times I remember my PS3 ever actually crashing]. I appreciate the quality of life upgrades like multi-use of items. The graphics improvements, while in some cases small, really make a difference to me in key locations. I've always loved the look of Darkroot Garden, and the slight upgrade was just enough to improve the things I didn't like about it, like the glowing flowers that were just a little too paper cut-out-looking when you get close. I'm near-sighted and my glasses don't give me perfect vision, so having a bit more clarity and definition all over is really nice for me.

I can't speak to version differences, but after two and half game cycles on my PS4 (non-pro), I've not noticed any real bugs or glitches. Very happy with the performance.

As for the game itself, I've had a good run. Rushed to platinum the game so I wouldn't have to think of trophies ever again. Really only the rare weapons trophy is a pain. And boy was it a pain, but it's all behind me now! The Bed of Chaos? Beat her on my first try, possibly for the first time ever out of all of my lifetime playthroughs (probably at least 7). NG+ Bed of Chaos wasn't so lucky though. I think it took at least 8 if not 12 tries. I can't tell if the smoothness of the remaster has made the game easier to me (dodge-roll timing seemed a lot easier than I remember it ever being), and/or my experience has just made me a better player, but most bosses seemed easier to me. Artorias and Manus were 1st-try wins, as were most other bosses I've historically struggled with. Kalameet's tail cut was a pain, but once I got it, the battle itself only took 2 tries. Balder Side Sword+15 with Sunlight Blade made things aggressively easy when I got them in the second half of new game plus.

Overall, glad to eat a little crow on the remaster.

I think the bosses are straight up garbage. It's quantity over quality. PvP is not why I play Souls. It's a fun aspect of the games, but not the reason I play.

worst boss in the entire series and I just can't be arsed to learn how to do it without getting swiped and killed at least once

I don't get that. The Bloodborne bosses have personality and are not a reference to Dark Souls. I can't even recall any of the 40+ bosses from 2 except the Dragon Lancer in the beginning, that shitty rat boss and that huge knight that's a call back to Demons Souls

Royal rat authority wasn't really an issue tbh. Bed of Chaos is straight up gimmick hell on par with ancient dragon.
