Mod Edit: This is an analysis thread. Please refrain from drive-by posting, even as a joke, as it has the potential to derail. Let's keep this thread on-topic. Thank you.

Dan lows is Senior Tech Animator at Motive Studios, previously Visceral Games (Star Wars), Ubisoft Montreal (Far Cry 3 / Watchdogs / Far Cry Primal). He does a frame per frame analysis of the TLOU 2 gameplay trailer

summary

They say it is probably systemic a combination of physics, coverage and motion capture with some scene scripted as in cutscenes like the end of the vid.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but they believe it could be real gameplay seeing naughty dogs track record. I havent seen the second vid yet, will check tonight.

Definitely not realtime gameplay but I'll just treat this as a non-gameplay trailer to show off the in-engine graphics.

Why not watch the video and then comment?

You literally have a professional animator doing an hour-plus breakdown.

Wow frame by frame and over an hour. This game is even impressing devs from other companies that some doubt it. Hell it is even impressing its own devs. XD.

All smoke and mirrors confirm?

In that it was all scripted and not actual gameplay? That's my feelings. The animation changes are so fluid that I have a hard time believing any of it was real-time gameplay.

It's amazing how people rush in with these takes

The only that the part that seemed borderline scripted to me was in the beginning when she was shoved against a car, and then transitioned into a melee attack into another closing enemy. I can believe bothe pieces separately but the transition was so smooth. Seemed very scripted in that sense. Haven't watched the video yet, but obviously ND has taken a huge leap forward.

Flanders, BE
can anyone put a summery?
It's real and it's spectacular.

He goes over pretty much everything, from little details in the environment, to going over all of the animations and movements. Which hit reactions are "physics", which are "scripted / mo-cap". He even notices how enemies have names when they talk to each other. He concludes by saying he believes it to be pretty much all real gameplay and all very impressive.

Didn't they pretty much confirm it was scripted? I'm sure I read that the demo was all the systems running at once, and wouldn't be in the final game.

I remember when people used to say that God of War's gameplay from last E3 was also smoke and mirrors.

Naughty God is such in the future that other devs (hi Eidos) claim it's fake ahah

he says in first 2 minutes that the indication is that this is gameplay(I'll watch it but just to shut up those who comment too early)

They're just in a league of their own - especially animation wise, it's unreal.

Isn't the smoke and mirrors comment just a joke based off what someone said about God of War last year?

We'll see how the final game turns out but there's no reason to believe it's not real. Naughty Dog, whether you like their games or not, are masters of this kind of stuff proved by the fact other big studios do analysis of their work.

The cinematics don't impress me as much as the gameplay animations...They look like cutscene quality themselves, the best i've ever seen.

Easy to see how devs are even commenting.

Their first gameplay demo of TLOU Part 1 was also fairly scripted as in they clearly rehearsed it many times before playing it at E3, but it doesnt mean it's not real time. Watch that trailer and then watch this one, and it looks like a pretty believable generational leap especially when you loook at enemy behavior and their animations. The demo is definitely realtime and lifted straight out of the campaign just like the Uncharted 4 demos so I doubt they are faking anything here.

The only thing that I find kinda unbelievable is the heavy throwing Ellie over the counter which breaks glass way too realistically. it's also very cinematic as the camera shifts from behind her to the side which tells me that might have been scripted to make it look more cinematic. Also the menacing way he walks around the counter is a bit sketchy because it was like a movie, not a game where enemies just charge at you. he took the perfect line too, the animation was a bit too smooth here. kinda crazy.

I also dont know how many different facial animations and voice overs they have for enemies. when the guy pulls Ellie out of the car, he looks like a boss or a fully animated NPC character, not some random enemy soldier. He had a dialogue and some fantastic facial animations. While I dont think this was faked, i doubt they will have hundreds of different enemies with their own faces and dialogues.

Initially I assumed some of this was scripted but hearing that AI calling each other by name, searching under cars, being able to pull you from under objects, and that the dodging and hand to hand combat is game play my mind is blown.

Michael Huber confirmed it was actually being played by someone next to him. Behind closed doors ofcourse.
How're we still doubting that this is actually gameplay?

Some people..

What the hell does "it's fake" even imply? It's obviously all real animation, probably in-engine animation at that? Are people saying it's fake in that it will not be indicative of moment to moment gameplay, because that's probably correct? It's clearly a heavily scripted sequence.

Watching the gameplay in the trailer I was totally taken back to the part in TLOU when you crash your vehicle into the convenience store and you have to break out.

The big difference though is my memories of the gameplay portion was a hell of a lot more janky than what was shown in this trailer and I figured there was now way the final game is going to play as smooth as this simply because it's a videogame.

The one part that especially stuck out to me was when Eli gets body checked into the side of a car near the beginning in the middle of this fight and than transitions to a counter attack. Games are not this fluid unless its some QTE event , even wizards like ND have failed to pull anything off like this.

I've seen Blur studios make really good "fake" gameplay videos, wouldn't be the first time. That being said, I'm pretty sure it's real but HEAVILY scripted, won't make it in the final game. Ghost of tsushima was scripted as hell too.

I skipped to the end, and he basically says it's mindblowingly impressive work - and that where he mentions spots where he talks about something 'looking' scripted vs systemic, that's just because it's so good it would require a lot of work to make something like that systemic...not because he doesn't think it is systemic or that it couldn't be systemic. He believes Naughty Dog are talented enough to achieve it in a systemic way based on their past.
