I like Opeth's early albums and I think Opeth was a good band but it's more some of their dedicated fans that are the worst, much like Tool fans.

Opeth for me got worse with their shift over time, even though Katatonia also changed their sound over time it didn't get worse, just different in my opinion, Opeth has become more and more boring for me.

New Zeal & Ardor is fucking sublime. Definitely going to compete with AOTY for me.

As much as I really loved Devil is Fine this does kind of make that feel a bit like a demo. This has better production and more integrated styling of blues/gospel and black metal. Absolutely amazing listen. Can't get enough.

!!! theres an entire new album out?? omg, their first was up there as album of the year for me. gotta check it out.

Song of the Day

Opeth - When

Controversial pick maybe. I have been revisiting the first few Opeth albums recently and kind of remembering how much I like them. It's almost weird to say but I feel like some of Opeth's albums, especially the early ones, are pretty underrated as melodic death metal albums. I've seen a lot of hate for them these days, especially here and the old place. Aside from these first 3 albums, I have a big soft spot for Ghost Reveries too. Since then though, I didn't like Watershed at all and listened to Heritage once and hated it. Not enjoying at all where they are at now but these first 3 albums are still pretty wonderful.

Amazing song, MAYH is definitely a top 3 Opeth album.

Song of the day - Thursday

So, for my first song of the day choice, I thought I would share my all time favourite song from my all time favourite band.

My Dying Bride - I am the Bloody Earth.

I love this song because it pretty much epitomises everything that made early My Dying Bride so groundbreaking. Violent, aggressive music mixed with beautiful melodies and one of the best death metal guitar sounds of all time.

Originally released as part of an EP on 24 January 1994, it came at a time when I was really starting to explore extreme metal after going through the usual gamut of Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura and other more "mainstream" bands from the 80s and 90s.

I love the stop, start nature of the main riff and the whole song just rolls along in a nice tempo. The vocals are perfection and the violins really complement the whole song perfectly. While I still love MDB, they lost something when Martin Powell left the band.

I've shared this song in this thread before, but since this was released as an EP rather than as part of a full album, many people aren't as aware of it as some of their other songs from the As the Flower Withers/Turn Loose the Swans days.

Enjoy.

Has anyone tried using the Agonia Records Flash2018 discount code? I put in an order and paid and then noticed that although it said -15%, i couldn't see any discount applied to the total.

Never mind, I figured it out. The Spektr was discounted cuz it's AR releases only.

Ordered these vinyl:

Surprised that the Spektr colored vinyl were still available. Guess they aren't very popular? I already have those albums on digital.

Seeing Primitive Man, Forn, and Wayfarer tomorrow night.. Then driving up to memphis on Sunday to catch Yob with Bell Witch!

I was lucky to catch the Bell Witch and Primitive man tour last year and absolutely can't wait to see both again.
I've seen YOB before so I know what to expect there :)

But Forn... these guys have been on my bucket list for a while.. Can't fucking wait.

Need to report that I have listened to Gojira From Mars to Sirus.

It has touched me in a special place.

That is all.

I shall now collect everything from them.

Virgil (guys from Animals As Leaders, Cynic, The Faceless) put out their EP The Pacer today. It's out on iTunes/Amazon/Spotify. No Bandcamp though.

Edit: It's on Google Music as well (which is good, because they provide 320 Mbps downloads).

it's always so weird to me that when navene koperweis is referenced it's usually by animals as leaders or the faceless and not animosity ._.
animosity was so much fun live and seemed like a much larger and important chunk of his career (so far)

nonetheless, the virgil ep is really enjoyable

You guys have any recommendations for good show earplugs?

I think there are some earplugs that are designed specifically for lowering the volume without actually filtering the sound? Something better than the cheap foam stuff you can bug at the corner drugstore?

I bought ACS Pro 17 a couple of years ago, and they've been great. The 220€ price is pretty steep though. It was a necessary purchase for me, since I wanted to avoid the tinnitus getting worse. I tried the 20dB filter first, but found the 17dB better suited for me.

If these bands actually make it this lineup is going to be their best in years

Going to hold off buying 4 day pass because I've been burned the last two years with their strong starts and boring followup announcements. Ended up skipping this year but if Frightmare plays I'll be there

I just started playing bass. I love to learn new instruments, My Yamaha TRBX 304 has just arrived, Damn... I have no idea how Steve Harris is enduring a 2 hour show at this insane pace. He must be superhuman or something...

Brian Wynn and Mike Majewski's Devourment spinoff Kill Everything finally has their debut coming August 17th. Two songs streaming on bandcamp, sounds good

https://comatosemusic.bandcamp.com/album/scorched-earth

Devourment proper should have a new album coming this year as well, battle of the MTD style slams.....who will prevail? (probably Devourment with those sweet Ruben Rosas vocals)
