I don't watch or read much yaoi or yuri manga/anime, but my friend got me into Yuri on Ice and it was a lot of fun, I find it funny how mainstream popular it got as well. Waiting for a season 2 of that.

Samurai Flamenco. I don't care what anyone says (including the creator) the relationship was 100% gay.

I always thought so too. Usually I hear "shounen ai" and "shoujo ai" for non-erotic works. Most of the manga I read involves sword fights, king fu, and manly, manly tears, though.

I did read "My Lesbian Experience with Lonliness" and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting some nonfiction.

As a gay guy I really get frustrated at the anime industry's representation of gay relationships. Almost every relationship is abusive or messed up in some way.

One of the few I have enjoyed was Yuri on Ice.

Have you watched Love Stage?

Definitely goes against that norm, but also cute, and well animated.

That's more of a problem with anime in general TBH. Even in animes with straight romances, the relationships are 90 percent creepy as fuck.

My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness by Nagata Kabi

This is a compilation of manga essays originally published on Pixiv. It's the personal story of an aspiring mangaka: a 28-year-old college dropout who's led a lonesome, unfulfilling life and who has never had sex or even allowed herself to think about sex outside of reading BL. For many years she's been on the path to self-destruction until she realizes that she needs to begin truly living before it's too late. So, on a whim, she solicits the services of a female sex worker.

One of the best stories to have come out in recent memory, albeit it has a stronger focus on depression than on LGBT themes. Still a very worthwhile read.

Does "Our Journey to Lesbian Motherhood" count?

It definitely does. Another great autobiographical story.

Ah Girlfriends was my first yuri manga, good memories.
One of my favorite is Kase-san by Takashima Hiromi and I can't wait for the ova.
Also a recent one I finished was Shimanami Tasogare. Loved it and would recommend.

Did you not like Doukyuusei or any of the This Boy can Fight Aliens / This Boy Caught a Merman / This Man is a Professional Wizard ones?

Did the creator even say anything? I just remember cards being release afterwards with both of them wearing wedding attire.
KEVZc5c.jpg
The director and the writer said this in an interview (according to TVTropes at least)
Death of the Author: After an interview in which both the director and the writer stated that Masayoshi and Goto aren't together by the end and neither of them learnt anything after all they went through (Masayoshi doesn't know what love is, Goto hasn't made any progress
moving on from his lost girlfriend
), most of the fandom promptly called on this

Maybe I'm misremembering. It was pretty damn overt in the show anyway

I watched up until the scene where one of the guys decides to sexually assault the other to determine he truly likes him. All the while the guy being assaulted screams "no" and cries. Made me stop watching immediately. Even worse was the fact they seemed to play it off like comedy. Ugh.

Rape/sexual assualt as a plot device for romance is disgusting.

Utena is great (awesome depiction of a bisexual woman) but Maria Sama...I can appreciate how iconic it is to the genre, but the subtext baiting is really bad.

My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and My Brother's Husband are both really good reads. My Solo Exchange Diary, a sequel to MLEWL, just came out a little while ago. Only a few pages in so far, need to get into it.

No Kannazuki no Miko? I mean the two leads
declare their undying love for each other in the end, and they're willingness to defy God and fate because of their love
Pretty hardcore.

Yuru Yuri is another of my faves. TOSHINO KYOUKO!

Utena! Especially the movie

My favorite (canon) yaoi

No.6! Very overlooked. A lot of yaoi anime and manga tend to bait heavily but never deliver. These two though end up making a little family together, it's adorable.

Keijo was amazing, realistically impossible pulling turnips with your hips/ass, but I still enjoyed it. Found as mistake while searching for the last season of Monogatari

Ah, yeah, that one scene was weird, and I can understand why it could push you away.

If you ever intend to watch it again though, that was the only scene in the whole series that had something like that.

Another one of my personal favorites would be Their Story (alternatively known as Tamen de Gushi or SQ: Begin W/Your Name!) by Tanjiu, which is a Chinese webcomic (so no official publication in the west, yet). It's about two high school girls meeting by chance and slowly hitting it off through their daily life, interspersed by various random happenings one can expect of teenage years. It soudns deceptively unoriginal, yet it maanges to be very enjoyable due to a colorful cast, and it feels definitely different from a Japanese manga in how wisecracking the characters can be, as well as being more slapstick humor-wise, without falling into overdramatization.

I unabashedly love it ... I love that there are no "evil" or bad characters, and that it is 100% about the relationships. I understand that it is a bit overly pure -- but, I'm ok with that sometimes.

I also think there is a place for this kind of show. I could go into why, but I don't want to derail the thread, because I want to find out more shows I should be watching lol

Kase San's great; one of the few Yuri's to have zero angst and drama. That just got a music video and an OVA recently if I remember correctly.

My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is incredible. Anyone that's ever had depression at any point in their life can relate.

I don't know if purely trans stuff is allowed in here, but Yuureitou is a fantastic story about a trans-man in 1950s Japan.

Yuri On Ice is fantastic. I also liked Love Stage and Gravitation. Junjo Romantica and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi are my guilty pleasures, but yeah they do have representation problems and unfortunate tropes. Gakuen Heaven probably has the gayest opening theme and I love every second of it.

One of my favorite BL mangas ever was Konya mo Nemurenai

tumblr_ma0xpmHUTP1rcvk2wo1_500.png

Excellent mix of comedy, drama, and character growth between one who wants a boyfriend yet summons a demon, a demon who is running from the one he may have to marry, and how they grow together. The secondary pairing is excellent too.

Endou is pretty hot, and Rikiya is relatable (same for Goro for some moments). Lot of cute moments and Ill always remember, its been years since it finished and it is still on my mind.

Yaoi/Yuri isn't about porn?

Why does it always seem so creepy then?

I think the issue lies in cultural perceptions and the target audiences. The characters are usually caught in specific roles and these roles are stereotypes that do not match real homosexual relationships, or any real relationship for that matter. Since they are not usually targeted to gay audiences there is no push back for change, so the fantasies presented are fan-service . Many of the shows here are the exception, Yuri on Ice for example.
