Hey guys, I got my Switch last week and put seven hours into Xeno 2. I'm right in front of the first city of the game, I'll go inside later today. So, early impressions here, I'm sure I'll change my mind about a few things as I play.
I'm a big fan of Xeno 1, but I'm an even bigger fan of Xeno X. I'm enjoying the game, but the beginning is a bit too linear for me. It looks like I'm right at the point where the game will open up a bit, so I'm optimistic, but I'm still a bit worried that I'll miss the freedom Xeno X gave me. Also, the map is confusing as hell, but I was probably spoiled by the Xeno X map on the Wii U gamepad.
I'm surprised by how much I like the characters. The anime style was a bit of a turn off for me when the game was announced, but Rex, Pyra and Nia look like an enjoyable crew (for some reason I really like Bana too ^_^). Story looks interesting, and it will probably get very confusing soon. Being a Xenogears fan, that's totally fine by me.
Technically, the game is a mixed bag. I'm not exactly a graphics whore and I have a hard time telling a 960p image from a 1080p one, but looking at my relatively small 32 inch TV, I can easily tell the game is kind of low-res (I imagine that's 720p, but I don't really know). Also, the image looks a bit weird at times, maybe some antialising thing. Art style is great as usual when it comes to Monolith, but honestly, I think the game looks a bit ugly because of the resolution :(
As soon as I got to the Gormott Plains, I got into a fight with four monsters at the same time and the frame rate just went to hell. I've seen a few people saying the frame rate dips were barely noticeable, but it sure looks like they are, considering I've barely started my journey.
Thankfully, music is really, really good, and I'm glad Monolith included many volume level sliders this time. I'm not annoyed by the battle voices as many are, but it's great that you can now just mute them.
And that's my early impressions. It might look like I hate the game, but I love Monolith and everything they do, so I am having a lot of fun with it. I'm just a bit disappointed about the technical aspects.
