I'd be disappointed it wasn't Tails or Knuckles.

Also it'd just be another excuse for people that aren't Sonic fans to be mad at the Sonic franchise for... reasons.

In classic Sakurai fashion Shadow will scoff at the implication and walk away.
Pause. Brawlers silhouetted in the distance will look around to each other, confused.
Suddenly, heard all around them as if coming from far away: "Oooooh ho ho ho ho ho...!"
The Super Smash Bros. Logo appears, to a cover version of "I Am The Eggman".

I would be all over Eggman in Smash

I mean, if they did it, it would probably be more significant than anything Sega could announce the next year on their own save for another Mania or Adventure title.

I'd almost be worried it would overshadow (no pun intended) Sega's own efforts later this year with Team Sonic Racing.

So I'm thinking about making a new music poll, similar to what I did on GAF. It also helps that I completely forgot how I did the nomination phase, which I'm sure Sciz appreciates, which also means I'm open to suggestions as to actually construct this sucker this time around.

Maybe a "through the eras" theme, like the Genesis Era, Dreamcast, Modern Etc. It would be interesting to see what era of Sonic music people jam to the most (though I expect nostalgia/genesis to dominate).

I tried watching some footage of Team Sonic Racing from a stream Sega did but goddamn the people playing are terrible. They barely even drift! It paints a really bad picture of the game and I don't understand why game companies continue to let people as bad as this demo their games live.

I just want to get a feel for how it'll play for someone like me (or many of us here, I bet). :(

Racing games, fighting games and character action games are kinda bad games if you want to see press be actually kind of good at them. That isn't to say they are like required to the best at every game they play that's ridiculous standard to hold someone to. But those genre's tend to yield less than steller video unless someone really into the thing shows up

Shadow in Smash Brothers as a clone of Sonic would be so incredibly braindead not just because he is an awful choice (should be Robotnik or something from another SEGA IP), but because Shadow himself has honestly a ton of moveset potential that would be way removed from Sonic. I feel like Sakurai has no real respect for the Sonic brand so I think whatever happened would be pretty wonky anyways.

That and it would not be fair for SEGA to have three reps while other third parties lack a second. Bomberman was ROBBED!

Other folks could get other reps

Via DLC

Although I agree on the Moveset thing

Here's something interesting: Windii apparently got her hands on an early Sonic Forces script (January 2016), and translated it!

https://twitter.com/SPEEPSHighway/status/1007404002475200512
https://pastebin.com/vDubsVhN

The broad strokes are very similar to the final version of the story, but there are a lot of little details that make things a lot more coherent. Things like:

- There's no description that Green Hill Zone is already destroyed when the game starts, it's implied Sonic is just chilling out there when he gets a call from Tails that they need help.

- In the final game, Sonic doesn't really seem to be taking that much of a beating from Infinite; he just sort of collapses kind of at random after being thrown around. Here, it's implied that Infinite warps space to obliterate Sonic with a flurry of blows almost instantly. Sounds like it was probably kind of violent?

- Sonic and Tails disappear at the same time, which is why Tails isn't in contact with the rebellion. This is one of those things you could just assume, but having it spelled out is nice.

- Infinite is handled a little more intelligently. He's never really clearly shown until around halfway through the game, and the script is big on treating him like a mystery.

- No Phantom Ruby in this script; instead it's a piece of technology called the "Valtron"

- Instead of being "banished to space," Sonic was scheduled to be executed. It's outright stated Eggman waited to kill Sonic so he could taunt him with having conquered the planet first.

- It's clearer that Sonic's prison break is part of a larger battle the entire resistance is launching on the Death Egg instead of just being a solo mission lead by the Avatar/Rookie

- It's clearer that the rookie is totally inexperienced and kind of a wuss. A lot of the rookie's early cutscenes imply the rookie is unsure of what to do or is outright afraid. Sonic finding/rescuing the rookie on the Death Egg makes a lot more sense.

- The Death Egg and surrounding asteroids were supposed to resemble Eggmanland from Sonic Unleashed instead of the bland "space station" tileset we ended up getting.

- When Sonic fights Infinite in the jungle, not only is that the first time the audience gets a good look at Infinite, Infinite is also supposed to nearly kill Sonic.

- There's a line to set up that the attack on Sunset Heights is a recent development; Eggman JUST launched an offensive there, which is why everything is on fire and there are Eggman Robots tearing the place up. (in the final, I think Classic Sonic's first level is there, and it's never really touched on otherwise)

- Sunset Heights is meant to be the rookie's first real successful solo mission. Think about it: they fail to save Sonic, and in this script their next mission after that is a team-up with Sonic to assault the pyramid in Green Hill. After finishing Sunset Heights as the rookie, everyone congratulates them on a job well done. It's meant to be a moment where the rookie proves themselves.

That's as far as I've read, but so far, it just makes everything so much more coherent. It really feels like the final script had a lot of the details shaved off.

Not really a fan of what I am seeing in the leaked script, but it is pretty unfortunate that so much had to change so late, causing the whole game to come out as awkward as it did. I can appreciate them attempting to make an especially bold and unique Sonic game even if they knew the majority of the fandom would react poorly to it.

I wonder how certain elements of Forces will be handled in future games. I feel like everything from this game will be ignored/dropped going forward, but at the same time it seems like just never mentioning characters like Infinite ever again would be a mistake.

I think you might see like, the concept of mercenaries pop up in sonic fiction again. They already have in the new comic.

Whether infinite will come back, or any of this will be referenced in anyway in any official material I don't know. To be honest, infinite is poised to be the new mephilies , never really popping up again

Honestly? I expect them to backpedal hardcore on basically anything even slightly comparable to Forces' aesthetics. I imagine the plans for the comics were set way before they saw Forces' reception too, so I could see those reverting to a more Mania or even Lost World-style visuals before too much longer.

Most non-playable characters in the series tend to be one offs, but in the case of Infinite and the Phantom Ruby I think there is a ton of untapped potential to do world-altering things (still pretty bummed they did absolutely NOTHING with Null Space in Forces). I mean, Infinite kind of stands for everything I dislike about the modern series but if nothing else it would be refreshing to see another genuine villain in the series show up every so often. I mean, his only real competition is Eggman Nega and that character is beyond trash.

I don't think so. Maybe not to like " sonic tortured for months levels " but the love for adventure cheese is rather high right now, so I don't think that's going away for a while.

I do also think there is potential in null space, and the phatom ruby rather than the bad character it got attached to. To be quite honest, null space could have actually filled in several plot holes general weirdness in the sonic forces tone and story telling. Instead of sonic being tourted, he was just...trapped in null space. Stuff like that

Sonic Team and to a lesser extent SEGA America continue to be completely aloof when it comes to differentiating the appeals of the Adventure era with the boost era (they constantly say they are the same thing), so I personally am not expecting them to do much in that case. That said, I have known some people at Sumo Digital for quite some time and can tell you they absolutely do get the difference between those styles and know that fans love Adventure 1 and 2, so I fully expect Team Sonic Racing to be loaded with stuff from the Dreamcast days. Hell, I would not be surprised to see references to Sonic Shuffle in there, even.

Yeah, that is a pretty good idea you have with Null Space. All they ended up doing with it was basically just tease fans with Chaos 0 and not even give him a boss fight. Honestly I have no damn idea how they were able to create literally another universe that was all about shifted reality and put absolutely no effort into doing anything even partially creative with it. A lot of these people made NiGHTS into Dreams so we know they can be creative with this stuff! Sonic Team is just so endlessly frustrating!!

It's almost as if they could have made something more long-form and focused as a complement to the game to fill in the story holes...like a movie.

She's also shared some amusing frustrated annotations from the doc initialed "AW" (likely Aaron Webber).
Windii said 'AW' said:
Tails defeats Eggman alone in SA1. Why is he suddenly so weak here? Is it just dramatic effect?

Tails and co just let Sonic get captured? Big loophole here.

Wait, wha? Silver? Why is he here?

Lets not call them Buddy. Sounds childish.

Why doesn't Tails remember Generations?

"We're going in Hard and Fast" will be the most played line from the game on YouTube out of context

UGH! We do this every single time. EVEry SINGLE TIME. Generations end. 06 End. SA2 end. ALL OF THEM. Whyyyyyy (on the "Sonic's friends cheering during the final boss" part)

That's so depressing that Aaron tried to prevent Sonic Team from including all of things that were bitched about and ridiculed after the game's release. They literally do not care at all do they.

They want to do , what they want to do. And they will take criticism, or not , at their own pace. This is what we are working with.

That's amazing.

EDIT: How can I see all those annotations?
How can you read the annotations? Or are those comments not publicly available?
The Excel doc itself isn't public because it'd apparently compromise the leakers identity (I think their name is tagged as one of the authors iirc). The selection of annotations and the dialog transcript seem to be all that Windii + her contact are willing publish from it thus far.

There is also a near-final English-localisation script in there with only minor changes like;
Windii said:
Tails saying "Thank you for helping us, Sonic. It's been classic." when seeing Classic Sonic off and Sonic saying "Hey, what's shaking? Get it? Because it's shaking? Oh forget it… you've got no sense of humor." when we first see him in his cell. I wish I was joking.

and what Seven Force posted.

I really wish I could just get a crossover Disney game without all the nonsensical black-hooded figures carrying giant key-themed weapons and everything else that just makes my head hurt about the franchise.

Unfortunate but understandable on the leaker's part. Nice that it's out there regardless. Just goes to show that the people writing Sonic games nowadays aren't really any better then those that wrote the older 3D titles and that Sonic Team has zero clue how to appeal to most fans with their stories.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the pre-release talk was conjured up by people at Sega of America who knew the game's plot was a mess but tried to make it look like something fans would want.

He's posted a lot of our tips, mine, yours, loves his Switch, and is a true asset to this insane fandom we all loathe and love...

Let's give 'ol Donnie a warm, official SonicEra welcome!

Donnie's a cool dude so this is some good news. Haven't had too many new members come to this thread in particular.

Hai!

I didn't expect to be greeted here before I even made my first post, but I'm not complaining! I've seen my work appear on SonicEra, as well as ResetEra as a whole, but it was always frustrating to not be able to properly respond to the concerns people had in their feedback. I didn't have a proper email yet, but I do now, so I figured the time was right to hop on the ResetEra/SonicEra train. <3

Enough about me, though. I'd rather talk about that Sonic Forces script leak. It's...interesting, but I haven't really looked into it much. Not that I expect any, but has anyone on the Sonic PR team, or at SEGA as a whole, commented on the script?
