Not even tried the 2nd demo, first one completely sold me on the game. Hell, probably the reveal trailer alone.

The visuals gives me eye fatigue. It feels like my eyes are having a hard time focusing because of the effect. Also this might be petty but I really don't like it when games do partial voice acting and also say completely different things in audio compared to text.
This happens in a ton of jrpgs. I don't get it but yes it is frustrating.

Also when characters just say someone's name when they're having a conversation. Just their name. And then doesn't say another word. Rampant in jrpgs. Like wtf.

Músic, artstyle and the promise of a combat system as good as BD sold me om the first trailer.

The first demo confirmed it and I havent played the second one.

Nope. Only my first boss battle with Therion the only thing I noticed is that this game is too grindy.

The enemy attacks you, you attack them back. Repeat until you run out of HP. Heal. And then all over again. There's no depth and no fun.

Maybe it could get better but for now I feel like there's no strategy in this. You win if you have lots of HP items.

Yeah, this is my position.

I'll gladly take suggestions for a good starting character though since I've heard they are permanent. I'm not a hardcore rpg player so I'd like to make a good choice there.
Cyrus is really good. He reveals enemy weaknesses automatically, his spells hit all enemies, his field skill is incredibly useful (gives you inn discounts, hidden items you can sell for good money, etc.) and reveals more lore about NPCs. He also starts off really close to the healer character (Ophilia) so you can go grab her almost right away.

Not sure. I have no idea why you would choose to obscure such pretty art with a multitude of ugly filters. So far you can only disable the vignetting which doesn't really cut it for me. The art to in game graphics transition is severely lacking.

It gets much more depth as you recruit more party members, and one imagines when we unlock the job combination system, the options will expand even more.

No RPG should be judged by the brief introductory segment where you control one character... but even then, I'd say Octopath handily has more mechanics to juggle—way more than beloved classics.

Fights, even boss fights, are pretty snappy when you take full advantage of available tools.

I've only played the first demo...but it was the exact opposite of what you've described.

This game made me go back to my childhood playing those amazing PSX RPGs non-stop.

Im getting in day 0. Im considering change my account to Australia just to get it earlier.

And plase, Square, please make more games like these!
Aha, don't. It's $90 on the eShop, which is a bit ridiculous ($67 US). Breath of the Wild set a really bad precedent for digital Nintendo prices here.

I'm trying this out just for the fun of it, just want to try the gameplay a bit, and I keep thinking how crazy this would look if this had the 3D of the 3DS, it would work perfectly!

Also, I'm 100% in, despite the dialogue for the H'aanit route being surprisingly poor (poorest Oldest Englishest I hadth seenest for ageth).

Luckily, the three other characters I've tried don't suffer from this issue, and it's a localisation gaff because the Japanese text isn't especially affected.

Started the new demo as Tressa, the daughter of a merchant family. It starts with a brief cutscene where we get to see them all talking about running the shop together. As soon as I gained control of my character, I walked back inside and talked to my parents, who talk to me like I'm any other customer and seem to have forgotten who I am. Really jarring right from the get-go. Even in this tiny town, there are multiple NPCs that you can't seem to talk to. It feels really weird.

I played the previous demo and while I enjoyed the combat well enough, I wasn't as impressed with the writing as others were. The art style has promise in concept, but the execution is muddy and dark even with whatever improvements have been made. The UI is really bad (and doesn't seem to have improved). The fade-to-black before cutscenes while wandering around is really jarring. As much as I want to support JRPGs on the system, I feel like this game could use a lot more polish than it's gotten, especially at its price point.

The dialogue doesn't bug me that much. Therion's story was fine from what I saw of it. My misgivings with the game are almost entirely graphical, which is too bad. If the art style was more consistent (if it just picked ONE of the three art styles it's trying to chimera, even), I would be fine with it.

Wholly agree with this. I also like the combat but the town traversal is really boring. Story and writing isn't bad so I'll pick this up on a sale.

How is the combat system?

Looks like it'll have a lot of depth if you really want to dig into it. Basically, it's like a streamlined Bravely Default combined with a streamlined FF13 break system. To go into more detail:

It's like Bravely Default minus the Default. You get a boost point each turn automatically (up to a max of 5) & you can use up to 3 boost points in a turn to boost any move. So like an attack could hit multiple times, a chance-based move could have a higher success rate, etc. I feel like this is superior to the implementation in Bravely Default for two reasons - one, it's faster-paced (you only pick one move no matter what, whereas in Bravely Default you could pick up to 4 moves in a single-turn) and it's more player-friendly (since you automatically get points instead of having to build them up with defends).

It's like a streamlined FF13 break system. Every enemy has 1 or more guard points. Every hit you make with a type that they're weak against (weapon types + magic element types) makes them lose a point. When they lose all points, they go into break mode briefly which means they're stunned (skip their next turn) & take more damage. I feel like this is superior to the implementation in FF13 because it's much more transparent & easier to plan around (whereas in FF13, you just switched to your ravagers and crossed your fingers).

To go along with that, characters can simultaneously equip a weapon of each type that they're able to use and you can freely switch between them in combat just by pressing left/right on the attack command.

Another thing I haven't seen a lot of people mention is the class system - when you get enough job points to unlock an ability, you can choose from many different abilities, with each successive ability costing more job points. So like with the merchant girl, I had her get a dodge move first (places a buff on her that makes it so the next physical attack against her is guaranteed to miss) but I could have gotten a group wind spell or a healing ability or an ability to summon mercenaries into combat at a price, etc. You can also get passive abilities that you can equip into 4 free slots - it looks like passives are unlocked based on how many total abilities you have in your job.

Anyway, I really enjoyed what I played in the demo - there was a decent amount of strategy even with my solo character (using dodges to build up boost while avoiding damage, trying to take advantage of her steal money ability in boss fights) although that'll vary depending on which character you start with. It looks like combat will be a lot of fun once you get a full party if you like strategic turn-based JRPG combat.

I love Bravely Default so I knew I was going to enjoy Octopath to some extent, but playing that first demo as Primrose was really cool. The other character they offered, I didn't play much with to be honest but I think once I get the full game I will be able to appreciate it as a whole. Played a little of the second demo but there's just so many games out lately that I haven't had the time to sit down and enjoy it. Probably will just wait for the full game.

I'll probably wait for a sale to get it. The music is great, the story looks interesting but in my eyes it's not worth $60.

Played the hunter and then the thief... So day one. The music of this game is sublime. The combat is good and fast. Preordered and ready to preload.

I actually stopped playing the demo because I want to wait. I really like the presentation and can't wait to play the full game.

Where can I still get the LE?

The first one did. The second has introduced doubts. While the visuals and music remain fantastic, I'm less convinced about the writing. The dialogue is overwritten and all the characters are bargain bin JRPG tropes. Since I doubt the combat system can carry the length of this game, they really need to impress me with the story here.

Quite the opposite. It's confirmed that the game isn't for me. Tried to keep an open mind, but not a fan of the visual style, at all. Just seems to contain the worst aspects of 2D/3D. And nothing else about the game excited me for the full version. Oh well, one less potential purchase is a good thing for me.

as someone who played many of the SNES JRPG´s at their time: Octopath isn´t in the same league as the best games of yesteryear...you are better off playing the real stuff than this attempt at "making pixel JRPG´s great again".

And the effects like the obnoxious dof are horrible in Octopath, the art is imo not so good, the writing seems bland, the world is not interactive enough...it doesn´t come together as a whole for me. Hard pass unfortunately.

I think I'm mainly going to get the game because I want to support third party exclusives on the system. But I'm sure it will be a very good game in its own right.

I was on the fence but an hour into the demo and I'm completely sold. I love it. Sadly I'm fully expecting it to tank everywhere and never see a sequel or continuation.

First demo convinced me to get it. Now to wait a month... shouldn't have played the first 3 hours yet.

Definitely, there are some genuinely interesting character stories being told here even if they aren't all as good as each other. I also dig the art style (even if the filter applied on top is a little aggressive) and while the gameplay doesn't seem like the deepest ever it is perfect to be my next time sink on the go and before sleeping. It is intriguing to me how different people's sensibilities to the graphics are, I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea but it just shows graphical and artistic choices very much can push away or attract players regardless of the content of the game itself.

It's definitely much better looking portable than docked though

Contrary to a lot of people on here, the first demo didn't do a whole lot for me, but the second one certainly has. Day one now as far as I'm concerned.
