Most of the giant dads are pretty easy to counter if you know how to parry the zweihander or simply bait their attacks. Many of them just think all they have to do is spam R1 like the video and they'll win when that's the greatest weakness to the build.

All I need is Artorias Greatshield for platinum (PS4).

Anyone able to trade this to me? I will trade it back after platinum pops. Let me know please.

Noema you can farm for red chunks at the very end part of the game, and you get 1 or 2 guaranteed drops per run. If you want to wait.

I don't know if this works on PS but on Xbox you can make the weapon achievements easier. In the final menu and set of upgrades, upgrade the weapon from +6 to +10, (or chaos to +5 chaos etc). Do NOT leave the menu. Go out to the home screen and quit the game from the stripey button context menu.

You get the achievement but the game only saves when you exit the menu. So if you force close then none of your upgrades save. I have all the cheevos but also still have all my slabs in case I want to do something different. You also only need 1 slab to get both types of weapon upgrade.

The DLC was brand new to me and I just finished it without spoilers. *spoilers ahead*

Looking stuff up I was amazed that there are fake walls, but now you need light to make them dissappear. I fought and killed manus with no idea that the silver pendant existed. Like an earlier poster his BIG arm slam kept tripping me up. He waits for AGES to do that slam and I rolled early every single time. I ended up cheesing it with a mix of havels and high magic defence armour, and a ton of healing. I could reliably dodge his arm sweep, and keep out of range of his multi hit tantrum, so I had learnt parts of the fight.

So far manus and the painted guardians on the beams have caused my most deaths in the game (I couldn't be bothered to level a bow to cheese the guardians).

Got the platinum.

My first save file is done. If I play again it will probably be a faith build. I love throwing lightning.

I might just play Dark Souls III though.

II haven't been able to dodge the only other dark attack he used against me, which spawns the blobs in a circle around you and has them quickly travel inwards toward you. But he only used it two times in a dozen attempts and I could tank them with full health.
You have to run in up close to him to dodge that. The balls come inwards but disipate at a distance that if you're stood close to him you're safe.

Just finished the game for the first time. What a ride man, loved every single second of it. It definitely shows its age in comparison to BB/DS3 (the two I've played), but it's a true masterpiece

Best boss fights imho: Artorias (one of the best in the whole series), Manus and Gwyn. I even managed to defeat Manus on first try, have no idea how I managed to pulled that off lol

Now I wonder whether I should take a break or go straight into DS 2

I don't give a fuck dying, but is this really what you spend your time doing? I haven't had one invasion that was an appopriately geared character for the zone. I just feel bad for new players.

Beat the game. Aside from only a few, a beat every boss on my first try, solo. Such a world away when I played the game originally and gave up after being unable to beat O & S.

Amazing game with an incredible soundtrack.

Take a break, imo. I'm also doing another run through of all the games but doing some other games in between.

I always intend on taking a break after finishing these games, so I start playing one of the 25+ games I have not played which I either bought on the cheap on a sale or which I got from PS+, but after a few hours I just go back to From games.

I want to finally play Uncharted 4 or Yakuza Kiwami, but the allure of DS3 or another run of SotFS just too strong.

Or maybe I should just play the Witcher 3's DLCs which I've been putting off for like a year but it'll be hard to go back to its handholdy ways after basically playing nothing but From games in 2018.

Crazy looking crab thing, can be dangerous. Unsure how they spawn, but it is related to other players deaths.

Vagrants are one of my favorite game mechanics. It's simple but genius because when you come across one it makes you think of where it came from...or who...
I only have come across two, ever.

https://darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Vagrants

Vagrants are monsters which spawn in response to bloodstains being lost or items being dropped and abandoned. When a player dies and leaves a bloodstain with considerable humanity (5 or more) and fails to collect it before dying again, or the player leaves certain items and reloads the area without picking them up, there's a chance these will travel to another player's world and become a Vagrant. Vagrants appear in two different forms (named "Good" and "Evil").

The "Good" form of vagrant looks like an egg with crab legs and will flee and vanish upon being discovered, whereas the "Evil" form has a claw and a ranged attack and attacks the player on sight. The ranged attack will cause very high damage, and can knock through shields very easily. Good Vagrants can drop items useful to the player if killed before they escape, and Evil Vagrants will drop valuable Humanity or Twin Humanity.

If a Vagrant is not killed by a player, it will be sent out again to another player's world. This will continue until the Vagrant is finally slain. If the Vagrant is sent out enough times, it will eventually upgrade into a more powerful black phantom version that drops more valuable loot when killed.

Good Vagrants have an initial phase known as Drift Items, which are item bags that appear exactly where the original item was left except the item within is significantly downgraded and often nearly useless. Possible Drift Items include things like a Lloyd's Talisman, Rubbish, Prism Stone, or Titanite Shard. The Drift Item will continue to be sent out to other worlds if it isn't picked up, and after a while will eventually become a Good Vagrant. As a Good Vagrant, the item inside is more valuable and becomes even more so if it can manage to survive and travel to other worlds until it becomes a black phantom Good Vagrant.

I'm playing it now and it's great. I miss the way locations tie together like they did in DSI but all the other improvements (graphics, combat, speed, QoL) make up for it.

That said, I'm currently doing a str/fth build and it sadly takes a while for the faith part to become relevant in combat. Unless you know where to look, you'll be quite a few hours into the game before you run into Lightning Spear.

Seconded. I ended up doing this on a whim after seeing someone mention Bonfireside Chat on Twitter, and it's been fantastic.

Tempted to repeat the process for 2 and/or 3...
You totally should, IMO they only get better as the podcast goes on. They're able to get better guests later on, too. I can't remember if VaatiVidya was a guest in the first season but I know he comes on at some point in DS3?

Guess that's enough Dark Souls for 1 weekend. I have way more fun things to do than fight Giant dad memelords all night.
Yeah, why am I being invaded constantly in Oolacile? Is it just the area for that, or is it my imagination?

You guys, I don't get angry at video games, but Ornstein and Smough are making me legit depressed
:(

I can't land two hits on these bastards alone. I have very limited humanity (I rarely have any, lol), and whenever I summon Solaire he just gets bodied by the two self-healing giant knights (who I can't kill without wasting half my Estus). I've read all the tips in this thread and watched like three different videos but I still feel like I'm making barely any progress.

I'm currently back in the Painted World just grinding souls to increase my endurance and upgrade my lighting-resistant armor. Seems like my best way forward at this point, lol.

What level are you and, more importantly, what level is your weapon? I wouldn't really bother with the armor, it's not really that important in this game. Your time is better spent upgrading your weapon (try to get +10) and learning the fight.

Which bonfire are you coming from? It's easy to avoid the Giant Knights by the fog gate if you come from the Bonfire where you met Solaire, after the archers. You have to do a jump from the stairwell and you can skip most of the run to the boss.

Or, if you are OK with summoning another player, I'm sure someone from Era would be more than happy to lend you a hand. Are you on PS4?

Coming from the bridge bonfire because it's already kindled and 10 Estus is better than 5, lol. I can avoid the giant knights just fine, but when I go to the summon sign they run up there and trap Solaire.

I'm running a Warrior character, level 50 with 25s on Vitality, Strength, Resistance and Endurance. I've been running a Drake Sword+1 since like Undead Parish, lol (which to my knowledge doesn't scale). I don't really like two-handed weapons and I haven't found a better one-handed yet.

Well, that's your problem right there.

Get yourself a weapon with good strength scaling like a club or an axe and then upgrade it as much as possible. You can buy and farm titanite in Sen's Fortress

Don't waste more points on resistance. They are useless.

I mean the area where the large divine ember is. xD Very few players even bother with this room, but as an invader I spawn there pretty often, and on occasion I will spawn in the middle of a player trying to survive that gank squad and it's just... lol. Oh geez. Another one caught by the Drake Sword trap. >_<

Stop following guides and use a proper weapon that you upgrade yourself, folks. Seriously, go back to the Parish and pick up the claymore, or get a Manserpent Greatsword from the snakes in Sen's, or something. They can be used one-handed, have a decent moveset and will do much more damage. You should definitely be doing that instead of grinding souls to to upgrade your armour, that won't make enough of a difference.

And yeah never ever level up resistance. A defensive build will focus on having high poise and a good shield, and strong damage to take out enemies without being staggered, not so much defense points. The gains are too little to make a difference.

Nothing wrong with the drake sword at the beginning, but since it has no scaling and it's very costly to upgrade it becomes almost useless by the point of the game you're in.

Since you've 25STR, a good strength weapon, even at +5 will easily outperform the drake sword at this point. You've probably picked up several along the way. Try them out to see which one you like the best and then upgrade it.

Protip: O&S are both vulnerable to strike damage. So that might be something to consider when choosing your weapon. Or maybe I'm just biased in favor of clubs and hammers. Put some pine resin on one of those and watch it dissolve those assholes.

The Bastard Sword is a funny weapon in DS1 - It has the same damage output (I think) and same weight as Claymore, only with slightly worse scaling, but they are both C/C. The only difference I think is the one handed R2s are slashes not thrusts and it looks a bit quicker to swing. It's kind of boring, but I've been using it for a while until I decide on something more fun.

I've read all the tips in this thread and watched like three different videos but I still feel like I'm making barely any progress

Not to be that guy - But I'll be that guy!.....

This whole thread people have said avoid the Drake Sword, it's a trap. It'll do you ok up to Sen's and then you start to feel the sting. You could rock the Drake Sword, farm Dragon Scales and get it to +5, but even then it sucks and all those points you put in to STR or DEX could've been in VIT or END so you can tank more hits at least.

Get a +10 weapon that scales with your stats, resin up that baby and rip in to O&S. If you're going back to Andre to ascend a weapon to +6 (only he can take weapons from +5 to +6, then +10 to +11) you might as well do a little humanity farming in the Depths. Put on the Gold Covetous Serpent Ring found in Sen's Fortress and have at least 1 soft humanity (counter top left) - a mxa of 10 humanity will increase your item discovery. Then you can summon Soliare if you're still having problems, but I think getting a decent weapon to at least +10 will solve most of your troubles in Anor Londo. Good luck!

Try Black Knight Sword if you can, ASaiyan
I do have one of those. I think my stats still aren't good enough for it in some area, but I can figure that out and fix it.

I will say though, Painted World is probably my favorite area of the entire game. It's like Scrub's Paradise, lol. Souls and humanity everywhere. And the boss is optional!

The problem with the Drake Sword is that it makes the beginning of the game too easy. You bypass the learning curve of the first half of the game, which means you run flat into a wall the moment the Drake Sword stops performing adequately. Dying to some hollow chumps in the Burg isn't fun, but the stuff you learn there forms the foundation for the rest of your playthrough. People who use the Drake Sword on their first playthrough don't have that foundation. And so the game forces them to build it in Sen's Funhouse and Anor Londo, which is even harder than the Burg and Parish.

The more you die in Dark Souls, the more you learn. So if you don't die at all because you got your hands on a powerful weapon early-game, you don't learn anything at all.

Trust me when I say I speak from experience. I used the Drake Sword on my first playthrough years ago because at that point I still thought dying was bad. No wonder I quit when I ran into the Capra Demon, something I couldn't just wave my sword at and kill. This time around, I made a point of using the Bandit's Knife for most of the early game just to train myself in actually fighting opponents, instead of striking them down before they could even hit me. And even then the game, in the form of Quelaag, eventually punished me for relying too much on my shield instead of working on my rolling game.

What I really wanna do is play Demons Souls Remastered tho :(

Yep yep yep.

The Drake Sword was probably intended to be for speedrunners or low-level runs, as a cool little secret. But thanks to the internet and orange soapstone messages, everyone and their grandma know about sniping at the dragon's tail and it backfired into this noob crutch instead, causing a lot of what you describe.

Glad I "missed" it in my first playthrough going blind, and I forgot what I used for the most part until I found the iaito (probably my starting wanderer's scimitar, or a claymore, IDK, been almost 7 years lol), but I'm glad I never fell into that trap.

I missed it in my first playthrough as well but I still created a mess of a character, hah. I ended up with a SL120 abomination with points spread all over the place. I didn't really understand the scaling or how damage worked. That character still lives on my Xbox 360, but I can't play my disk since the tray doesn't work, but I'll upload it to the Cloud to play it on my brother's One next time I go visit.

If you did get the Black Knight Sword (it's a very lucky early drop) that thing will carry you through the end of the game if you upgrade it. It literally melts faces. 330 Base Damage plus decent (C) STR scaling, and bonus damage against "Demon" enemy types.

EDIT: Double Post (Sorry)

It's a matter of the way your spec your character and personal preference, but all things being equal, the BK Sword is one of the best weapons in the game bar none. High damage, requirements that aren't steep, scales with STR/DEX, deals slash and thrust damage with R1/ R2 respectively, not too heavy. Its only downside is that it can't be buffed with resin or magic.

Plus it uses Twinkling Titanite for upgrades, unlike boss weapons which require harder to obtain Demon Titanite.

Pretty sure my Knight Shield+5 already has that. That bastard Ornstein is just too damn fast. Also if you don't have Solaire it's basically impossible to "separate Ornstein from Smough" so you can actually get hits in. You'd think that big hammer guy would get himself stuck behind the pillars, but nope! And he's not even slow! How the hell does he move that fast! Lol.

One of my favorite strength weapons was the Large Club (not giant) that can drop from the big guys in Blighttown. I love the R2 lunge attack, and the jumping overhead attack has great range. Then of course it deals Strike damage, which seems to be the best type

Strike vs slashing vs pierce doesn't seem like it makes a huge difference in this game, in my experience, unlike in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2.
