I'm only five minutes in and I think the game is insanely beautiful

It's definitely much better looking portable than docked though

I did notice that the UI and graphics don't seem to scale well on my 4K TV. :(

I know that's a first world problem sort of thing but kind of sucks. D:

Maybe but not for full price. I don't really like the graphics as many have already stated and I'm very wary on these jrpgs. At their best they're some of my favourite games like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest ix. At their worst they're plodding like Persona 5 and everyone praised that one. I'm going to be careful.

The thin Depth of Field effect really does amazing things to thr environment. It feels like it opens up the vistas

Not quite.

I'm in the caves. Olberic is the character I chose, and at the time I knew people would say 'he's the stock standard, choose Primrose instead' but I haven't done that as yet.

The game seems good, but the style/genre is a bit of gaming blind spot of mine.

Should I push on through the game's seemingly difficult gameplay here (I'm just a bit lost in dark maze areas in JRPGs eg sewers/forests/caves etc and the constant same enemies I keep encountering) and finish Olberic's demo?

Or should I start from scratch? Are there other areas available to the newer characters?

I enjoyed the second demo more but still found it a little boring at times. I might pick it up when's it more reasonably priced in the $30ish range

What do you mean? I haven't come across any translation errors, or anything.

If you mean H'aanit's stylistic speech, only her and her master speak like that, to differentiate their isolated dialect.

Just started with Therion and there was some weird parts right away about 'teacups' or 'teapots' that made no sense from what I can tell. Then there was some line that was 'Yes we butchers so much loot together' or something along those lines.

I didn't play much after that part.

It's "tea leaves" which I think is extrapolation from teev, which is extrapolation from thieves.

I'm sold on it. But not sure if I'll pick it up day one. Wanna try to deal with a few things on my backlog first.

Not really. The music is phenomenal, but I still really dislike the graphics. I'm probably going to get it at some point this summer out of sheer boredom, but now that I know what the final game is going to be like I'm not any more hyped than I was before.
100% agree with you on the graphics.

I think the graphics are crap for a real home console system. It looks like mobile game type graphics to me.

I'd be totally fine with it as a mobile game, but I expect way more from a current day console.

Already preordered.

The first demo sold me.

It's one of the highlights of this game for me.

Yes it's turn based but not overwhelming, you understand everything you need to know in the first 2-3 battles, so i think even who usually hates JRPG for their complexity should be fine here.
I love turn based and for portables there is no better system.

Debating on whether or not to replay the demo so I can get further, I enjoyed the demo so much. I think the last time I enjoyed a demo this much was on the Gamecube with RE4.

Thanks for that.

Cockney rhyming slang apparently.

I like it! it's a pretty nice turn on the old roguish style of having nicknames for things encountered in the business! he also calls the prison they're in a Tea pot.

I'm actually interested in seeing more of that story in part to see that guy again, honestly! he had an awesome personality in those flashbacks, and I'm ready to be sad.

This games HD pixel art is pure eye candy and the battle system seems like it will be dynamic enough to keep me interested for a long time. My only concern is whether or not the narratives for each of the eight characters will be equally engaging and well written. My biggest hope is that somehow the characters stories will all overlap somehow in the end and culminate in some grand fashion. I still don't really know what the larger plot is if there even is one. Despite these small nitpicks, I love what I've played of it so far and plan on getting it day one. Super excited!

I was so confused, lol

This is honestly my one big fear with this game, I still have a hard time thinking how they will achieve this.

I was intrigued from the early trailers, and absolutely sold after the first demo. About an hour ago I finally capped out on the three hour limit for the demo and I really enjoyed the time and I'm still definitely buying the game, but the way the demo works also does give me some reservations. It'll be really disappointing if the open-ended nature of the game just means you're playing through eight completely separate tales and the party doesn't actually have any interaction with each other. I also wish I'd gone for some different characters for my initial run; I like the notion of Alfyn as a protagonist but his prologue and motivation has felt really lacking compared to others so far.

Plus, I had him venture out and immediately recruit Therion, and having him helping out during Therion's first chapter felt...really thematically-wrong, lol. That's the sort of thing that concerns me with the individual character chapter structure. Game's gonna be worth it for the soundtrack if nothing else anyway!

Has the new demo cleared up exactly how the whole "you can do all 8 campaigns in one play through" will work?

I've been looking to get into JPRGs, but I can't really tell what's unique about this one outside the artstyle. Why are people so excited about this game? I'm genuinely interested, I'm not familiar with the JRPG scene at all.

I'm sold. Love the art style and ambiance. And from what I understand it's a pretty beefy adventure hour-wise, so $60 is very fair.

Was sold from first. 2nd demo has a 3 hour limit it seems so I'll probably just sit on it until the day before the game releases.

Most people seem worried about no overarching story. I've only played Primrose and Cyrus, and can say there definitely is one. Both have those mysteriously cloaked guys after them

A charming turn based RPG for this summer, why not.
The fact that I can play in many languages and always have japanese voices helps a lot.

Though I still wish we could get back to the PS1 RPG at some point. It's always either Snes-type or full "modern" 3D. I'd like some Chrono Cross-like games with original graphics and gameplay.

Yeah, this is my position.

I'll gladly take suggestions for a good starting character though since I've heard they are permanent. I'm not a hardcore rpg player so I'd like to make a good choice there.
But you can change to another one as soon as you meet, so I don't think you should bother.
It's probably better to stick with the characters you'd like to see more of and swap for another if you feel like it.

I think so. I have it preordered, but we'll see. I still haven't finished xc2, which I love, despite the confusing combat system.

I'm buying Day1.

But I'm afraid I might not finish it. I mean - you really start from nothing in every story, so 8 times... I wonder how it will feel coming from powered up character at the end of one arc and starting new one...

Besides the visuals, the combat system seems really neat (combining some of the best aspects of Bravely Default with a break system like Has-Been Heroes) and it looks like it'll be plenty beefy with 8 main playable characters and a nice mix of linear & non-linear content. Mostly it seems like it's a great attempt at fusing nostalgia with modern aspects.

But I'm afraid I might not finish it. I mean - you really start from nothing in every story, so 8 times... I wonder how it will feel coming from powered up character at the end of one arc and starting new one...

If the demo is any indication, there's some difficulty scaling depending on the order you do things. Like the first origin quest assumes you have 1 character at LV1, whereas the second origin quest you have 2 characters at around LV5, etc. You're not playing 8 LV1 single-character scenarios.

I honestly thought it looked like boring tripe in every direct/showcase. After playing it, I'll probably get it on a sale. Doubt I'll finish it - the last RPG I played through to the end was Golden Sun (yeah, the first one). I just don't have the time anymore, but the demo def hooked me and it's been a while since I've liked a pure jRPG like this. Maybe just an itch I didn't know I wanted to scratch.

There seems to be some auto-scaling as you progress through the early game, so that each additional character you encounter and add to your party, their associated starter zones are leveled up. So far it went recommended Level 1 -> 5 -> 7 for me. I had a real challenge on the 2nd character's end of chapter boss.

No because I was already sold on the game.
It really feels like a quality RPG from the Squaresoft of the '90s which is all kind of awesome since I believe that company peaked in that decade.

Will probably be my system seller, the first demo was good enough to show me. I loved the old Dragon Quest on the DS so i cant wait to sink into this journey soon enough.
