"Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge with Allah from knowledge that is of no benefit" - Ibn Majah 34:17
In this day and age, we have an abundance of information but seldom wisdom. We often settle for soundbite narratives in favour of arduous learning endeavours for preference of comfort or confirmation bias approval from others.
Take your time with the learning process. You will inevitably have to rethread previously read books, relisten to podcasts, and repeatedly ingest several media simultaneously to achieve a wholistic frame of thought. Learning about your religion is a lifelong journey.
More often than not, a lot of us need to discard our cultural baggage and synthesize our Aqeedah ("Creed") from the ground up to form a solid Islamic Cognitive Frame.
Don't be afraid to be studious when it concerns your religion. We often aspire for PhD levels of knowledge of secular sciences yet we neglect our faith, then feign astonishment as to why we suffer crises of faith or have abysmal "leaders". You as a Muslim need to be a master of several trades if you want to make a real difference in this world and ascend to the next. The previous scholars of yore were polymaths in many fields and held Islam fully intact as the crux of their being, don't be afraid to follow in their footsteps and push yourself to grow. May you live in interesting times.

"By the star when it descends,
Your companion [Muhammed] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

It is noteworthy to highlight that the Qur'an is an oral document first whereas a mus'haf is just a physical codex. Only through recitation does the mus'haf transform into the Qur'an. It's also not in chronological order but in a unique structure of its own.
The Qur'an is a fusion of prose and poetry with numerous rhythmic devices embedded into aya'ats ("signs/verses"). Each aya'at is dense with multiple "tapestry-like" dimensions that are all cohesively interpreted through linguistics tools provided within the Qur'an (intra-contextual interpretation). The aya'ats are worded in a precise grammatical manner such that context (and by extension adherence to the Seerah ["life of the Prophet "] through Hadith ["saying of the Prophet "]
always become apparent (extra-contextual interpretation).
The Qur'an's Divine calling plays a vital role in understanding the Prophet's Seerah and Muslim life. It is a confirmation of previous scriptures - in their original forms (the Zabur/Psalms, given to David, the Scrolls, given to Abraham, the Torah, given to Moses, and the Injeel/Gospel, given to Jesus, peace be upon them all, to name a few.
It is a scripture that demands the reader's attention with its poetic rhyme and didactic tone, it starts with an inquisitive rational proclamation and then steers to a spiritual calling.
The "end" and "beginning" of the Qur'an are linked in a circular/ring-like manner to denote a continuous never-ending connection. It is a scripture that ripples through the believer's heart, mind and soul.

The Hadith Corpus is a collection of sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad and acts a complementary companion to the Qur'an.
You're not expected to learn everything about the Hadith Corpus. Most of the controversies in the media involve the Hadith. A Muslim can only endure so much draining bombardment from the constant rainfall of critics. There's only so much you can respond to and that's assuming the asking party is even interested in getting an answer.
You don't have to believe anything someone tells you unless they provide evidence. Even then, that evidence is subject to scrutiny.
Having a solid foundation on general principles of the Hadith Corpus will grant the tools necessary to handle obstacles thrown your way.

The Creed of Deliverance is a short poem composed by the great Moroccan scholar Imam Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kittānī. It contains the basic foundations of creed that were typically taught to young Muslim children as a premier text before they delved into more complex theological matters if that was the path they wanted to take. In this series Dr. Mohamed Ghilan offers a translation and commentary on the issues raised by the propositions asserted in each line of the poem. The recording was done as part of a short course to prepare young Muslims before they begin their post secondary education where they are sure to face serious intellectual challenges to their beliefs.

  • Then submitting our intellect to it, use the Quranic frame. (See Imprisoned Thinking linked below).
    • Blind faith is not to be encumbered upon Muslims.
  • Obligatory knowledge upon Muslims: knowledge of the Creator and Messengers of God.
  • Three rules of grasping the intellect: the necessary, the impossible, and the possible.

  • DesCartes plagiarizing al-Ghazali (Deliverance).

    • "There is no meaning in life" is a statement said in this very life and assumed to have inherit meaning/truth value and then used to negate life's meaning. It's self defeating.
  • String/M Theory shouldn't even be called a hypothesis in its current state let alone theory. It's the imagination of Mathematicians and Theoretical Physicists on a blackboard.
  • Even if String/M Theory turns out to be true, it doesn't justify current Atheist Scientists taking findings in the quantum realm and superimposing them into the macro realm.
  • When addressing concerns, all one has to do is negate the principles. If the foundation is weak, the rest collapses. Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi.

  • Order of intelligence:

Asalaam alaykum everyone, I hope your Ramadan and Eid went well. As promised, this is the beginning portion of the long awaited MuslimERA thread. This project was originally conceptualized back in the old forum but let's just say a change of plan occurred.

With that out of the way, welcome to the Muslim ERA / Islam ERA OT!

Salaam,

I've subbed. Nice work, OP. I was hyped for this thread when I saw it mentioned in the Ramadan OT.

I'm not Muslim, but coming from an evangelical background, I'm very interested in educating myself. I know quite a few ignoramuses, but I don't know enough to have any real discussion about what Islam actually teaches.

Do you think Sheikh Hamza Yousuf is worth noting here in the thread (another American scholar). I find his talks to be quite interesting too.

I would definitely recommend people taking a look into Dr Jonathan A.C. Brown's work as a precursor to jumping into hadith literature as a measure to avoid any turbulence that it may cause one otherwise.

Night_Knight, have you ever gotten a chance to listen or watch Yasir Qadhi's Seerah series? Its a pretty amazing deep dive into it and doesn't shy away from the nitty gritty aspects. I think it would it would be a great addition to the seerah section of your post.

Great OP dude. Subbed!

Aim of this OT:
Asalaam alaykum everyone, I hope your Ramadan and Eid went well. As promised, this is the beginning portion of the long awaited MuslimERA thread. This project was originally conceptualized back in the old forum but let's just say a change of plan occurred.

I'm aiming for a weekly update towards the reserved spots as there's a lot to cover. Feel free to make yourselves at home and this OT is welcome to everyone.

I'll try my best to respond to any questions and concerns ye may have, as will some others. I'll be upfront, this is not a debate thread. This OT was constructed primarily for Muslims and for the curious passerby. I'm sure you're all more than aware of how the topic of religion can get heated here. If you really want to start a debate of sorts, either start up a new thread or you can try your hand at visiting the "Durkistani Discord" (it's been recently revamped, PM me for the link) where I can get you in touch with others.

This OT is a prototype project I've been working on. There will be a "Master Version" of this idea under the banner of "Mixed Mental Arts - Islamic Belt System" in Mixed Mental Arts hosting Bryan Callen and Hunter Maats and if I'm feeling ambitious enough, a personal future blog that I'll get around to making.

Personal Message:
"If you're part of a group/forum and the cool thing to do is thrash on others with snide remarks, are you really learning? As opposed to sitting down, alone, opening up a book and really have your thoughts challenged and be really uncomfortable and be willing to entertain paradoxes, even for years, holding them in your head. Know what is mean to gain knowledge and wisdom or are you going to keep living in the meme?" ([Timestamp: 29:34 - 40:00] listening at x2 speed advised)

With that out of the way, welcome to the MuslimERA OT! Salaam.

This post is hard to read as it's in all white text. I guess it has something to do with dark mode?

Valiant effort, but seems very one sided SO FAR.

Was waiting to see Peak of Eloquence, esoteric interpretation of the Quran, Batin, vs Exoteric which is a fundamental divide between Shia and Sunni interpretation of Quran.

Subbed nonetheless.

Sad reading this.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims are meant to abstain from food, drinks, smoking, sexual activity and offensive language. Understandably, during this month, TV broadcasters across the Arab world tend to tone down programming and promote more family-friendly content.

Yet year after year, racist mockery and derogatory language against Afro/black Arabs and black African migrants make it to the TV screens of millions of Arab families gathered to enjoy TV series produced especially for Ramadan.

This year's Ramadan TV content failed to "disappoint" in this regard.

The Egyptian comedy series "Azmi we Ashgan" (Azmi and Ashgan) created by controversial Egyptian producer Ahmed el-Sobki, featured the lead actors donning blackface repeatedly throughout the series, as well as the use of racist language (including the use of the n-word) and the portrayal of black people as servants who speak in broken Arabic and practise sorcery...........

Feeling down about it. Never had alcohol even mistakenly in the past.

I mean since you ate it accidentally, I'm sure you're not committing any sins.
It was an accident, don't sweat it too hard. I unknowingly ate pork when I was a kid (I was hungry at school and they only served that and milk). When my mum found out, she packed a lunch for me during those days.

That verse will be eternally relevant. Falsehood shall perish by its very nature.
Yea I understand. It's just an upsetting feeling especially after cleansing the body and mind with Ramadan.

So how come you guys dont eat certain food and drink beer?

Put simply, [religious] rules. You can get further into it with justifications (avoiding the social perils of drunkedness, avoiding the greater chances of parasites/illness/poisoning (at the time)) if you want.

Of course, not every Muslim follows every rule, but if your culture/family doesn't eat pork or drink alcohol, it's unlikely that you'll have much desire to do so either. How likely are you to want to eat dog meat or monkey brains having grown up in areas that don't condone those?

I hate how Majed Nawaz is held as an example of "good muslim" by the west. New Atheists and their followers love him for a reason and its because he rejects aspects of faith altogether. How can you even call yourself a Muslim if you believe the Holy Book needs to be revised?

OT a mess. I wish more informed posters on Islam engaged posters on why Nawaz is not a representative of Islam and why that Pew Poll is trash :(

I don't think anyone can change a mind of a person who believe that Nawaz is a good example of Muslim. I don't think such people are even interested to hear why non-practicing Muslim like Nawaz can't represent Islam or its followers, let alone speak about a reformation of any kind. It simply boils down to the fact that a lot of people have this notion that theology is some sort of simplistic discipline where anyone can be an expert.
