Jesus man this episode was straight up torture porn, but it so perfectly executed on a technical level. Give Moss all the awards on the planet.

I knew I was in for it when the episode description had a straight up graphic content warning.

Fuck I don't know if any media has ever made me cry more than this episode did.

It was incredibly well done and the timing with current affairs just made it that much more powerful.

I'm still spinning from this episode

I was gonna play a game or something but feel completely drained. I need to watch something dumb like Cobra Kai to rinse the misery off.

Are we sure Mel Gibson didn't direct this?

What.

So who set Nick up? Couldn't have been the Waterford's unless they figured the guys would catch Nick with June and return her but kill him. Now they're without their handmaid...

Does anyone else figure that goodbye was supposed to represent a final goodbye? I kind of feel like that's the last time we will see Hannah.

What.

I have no idea what happened at the end there.

3 scenarios come to mind; bad luck, Nicks wife, or Fred Waterford. I'm leaning towards Fred just cause of what June said to him about the baby not being his but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a case of bad luck.

Also, totally thought that was the season finale. Too used to shows with 10 episode seasons. Three more episodes!

The only way I can see it being Fred is if he expected June to be caught with Nick, and Nick arrested, June returned. Now he'll have to out himself, or just pretend like she ran away.

It's not the finale!?

Oh shit.

What the fuck kind of shit was that. So he and his wife do something so evil, and then he decides to repent by giving her 10 mins with her kid?

Waterfords are nothing but trash. Gilead supporters are nothing but trash.

Last season was only 10, so I thought this was the end, too. It would have been a very unsettling way to end the series for now.

Really dislike when the number of episodes changes in a season.

Nick has to be in the running for dumbest characters of all time. He can't even feign the slightest interest in his child bride to keep her happy? He's constantly lovingly looking at June right in front of her? How fucking stupid is he?

He isn't very bright, yeah. I was frustrated when his wife confessed to cheating and he was all "meh it's okay" and she was like "???". Like, either tell her you're uncomfortable with her age, say "We don't really know each other very well yet", or just fucking pretend you're into her - you have to communicate something to her because otherwise you could be executed!

I don't really buy him as this savvy spy to be honest.

I think the thing with Nick is it seems like he hasn't been in the best mental state, at least this episode. You can tell he can hardly contain his anger anymore. I was actually expecting him to shoot the other guard in the house and take off with June and Hannah.

Fucking eerie.

We really are becoming Gilead.

Yeah the timing was really something else. I just kept thinking that thousands of parents have gone through this in real life within the last couple months. It fucked me up.

My wife and I took a break after the "Last Ceremony", watched something else and came back to it and then they pull that shit with Hannah. We were both sobbing idiots by the time Nick made a bid for dumbest move on the show. Being a parent messes with you, man.

Nick being a bumbler loner fits his casting way more than Nick as a scorching love interest for June.

Yeah this episode had my mom in tears, which I don't think has happened with any series she has ever watched

I don't even want kids and that whole last half killed me

I'm rewatching Mad Men and this show. So seeing Elizabeth Moss go from Offred to Peggy is just....mindbreaking. She was so pure. It also doesn't help that I love west wing.

So we're pretty sure that Nick got taken out by some guys conspiring with the asshole who kissed his child bride, right?

Because we never saw his reaction to them getting caught and he probably freaked the fuck out and decided he had to get Nick before Nick got him. And he doesn't know Nick is an eye, he would only think he's a driver.

She's an incredible actress. I don't think you can really appreciate the depth of her portrayal of Peggy until you've seen her play June.

Handmaid is filled with incredible actresses.

That's the first thing I thought of, and I had forgotten that it's not public knowledge he is an eye.

The other driver at the house saying "we have to leave right now" seemed like he knew someone was coming, because it wasn't 10 minutes like he said.

Here are the trailers for the upcoming episode 2x11 Holly

Youtube trailer

Israeli trailer

I have to say, Jordana Brewster did a surprisingly good job in this episode. Child actors are usually hit and miss, and I'm so glad that this wasn't a Jake Lloyd performance by any stretch. I also came to like the martha enough that if they use her in future episodes, I have some investment in her well being.

Has anyone seen the show Sense8?

I've watched Sense8. These recent trailers are conjuring up memories of one of Sense8's backstories. I wonder if the writers of THT would go the same route. It would keep the Waterfords from having the child. And that's really what must happen, I feel. But that also means that June can't have the child either.

I have 2 theories on Commander Waterford's state of mind:

He's either convinced that it's going to be a boy and later disappointed in it being a girl.

or

He'll perceive that the child isn't his at all and be indifferent just the same.

I believe the child is going to be a girl. That the commander will be callously indifferent to the child for the short time he has it, and that when the child ends up being spirited away by someone, that he's going to take out his frustration on Serena.

Many people were comparing the Waterford power dynamic to Palpatine/Vader, but I'm convinced that is will start to resemble Megatron/Starscream as time goes on. One aspect of Gilead that has not been explored on any meaningful level yet has been the hypocritical biases for those on top. I don't expect any severe consequences to be visited upon the Waterfords on the level of what happened to Warren Putnam. The Waterfords will most likely be safe, but end up passively feuding among themselves.

I also think that there will finally be a major blow up between the Waterfords and it will involve June's child.

Serena Joy is Phyliss Schafly in my opinion. She is every female alt-right dirt bag in real life who leverages their own gender to undermine the rights and dignity of other women below them by passing draconian laws, but would see the world burn just as swiftly before they allowed these laws to encroach upon them.

And I think on some level, even Serena Joy knows that the laws of Gilead are morally corrupt and shallow at best.

I followed this too until her help in the unsanctioned rape of June.

She knows it's wrong. She even flatly calls out Commander Waterford for raping June in the upcoming episode. Keep in mind that well before Serena's chastening moments throughout this season, that she had the machiavellian foresight to have all of the maimed handmaid's sequestered from seeing distance of any of the visiting delegates from Mexico last season. She even compared them to rotten apples at the top of the cart. If what they were doing wasn't morally reprehensible, why go through all the trouble to hide them in the first place?

Watch Top of the Lake for more great work of hers. I'm still waiting for Season 3.
Yep, Top of the Lake is so fucking good. Make sure to watch the BBC version, if you can. (It's 6 episodes instead of 8)

OK...finished. Jesus.

The Hannah scene was unbearable.

The rape scene...the Waterfords are monsters, no ifs, buts or otherwise.

Having two scenes like this in one episode.... farrrrrrk....

I see now what the writers were doing in previous episodes. It wasn't a redemption arc for Serena or anything. It was making sure we knew that she's human, that she knew what she's doing is wrong, that she had her chance to exit, and turned her back on all of that. It was closing off any redemption. She's a developed character now, but not a redeemed one.

Oh my God, Hannah. It would have been almost more bearable if she hadn't realised this was 'mommy' and let her guard down.

And now what for June? This ending can't go anywhere, surely. As soon as they started driving to the manor, I was thinking...ok, why don't they just drive now to the border? Of course there's many reasons why that would be very risky... but obviously Nick started thinking about escape after the meeting with Hannah.

But Waterford knows where she is. He'll send more guardians to get her...she's in no state to make an escape attempt alone... that can't lead anywhere, right?

My speculative guess is that June suffers through a birth alone, and the baby doesn't survive

Almost like Riley in Sense8.

Serena Joy will be the only person who gets out this season. She knows about the fertility crisis falsely being pinned on women. And Fred losing June again will be the last straw.

This last episode has about pushed me over the edge. The scene with Hannah, the rape scene... Serena Joy needs to die a long, slow and painful death!! She was the one who convinced him to rape June and then in the new episode previews she calls him out for it?!? She's a special kind of evil.

Sidenote: I love all the suggestions of new shows to watch! I am simultaneously watching Westworld, and despite all the hype, I am having a hard time getting involved with it.
