EDIT - the source I had posted to had altered an element of Cranston's statement, lifting a segment from Cranston's statement about Trump. I apologize for that oversight, and have removed that link to prevent further mischaracterizing of this statement. Instead, I'm solely leaving the BBC interview and the quote Cranston gives in response to the question of whether or not "the Weinsteins and Spaceys" could return to the world.

"It would take time, it would take a society to forgive them, and it would take tremendous contrition on their part, And a knowingness that they have a deeply rooted psychological and emotional problem and it takes years to mend that. If they were to show us that they put the work in and were truly sorry and making amends and not defending their actions but asking for forgiveness then maybe down the road there is room for that. Maybe so. Then it would be up to us to determine, case by case, whether or not this person deserves a second chance.

We should let that open. We shouldn't close it off and say, 'To hell with him, rot, and go away from us for the rest of your life.' Let's not do that. Let's be bigger than that. Let's leave it open for the few who can make it through that gauntlet of trouble and who have reclaimed their life and their dignity and their respect for others. Maybe it's possible.

You know between this and his Trump comments I think I'm done listening to what Cranston has to say

Maybe after they pay their dues like the rest of us would have to by serving jail time.

It would be egotistical for anyone to say, 'I hope he fails.' To that person, I would say, 'F— you. Why would you want that? So you can be right?'"

Isn't that word for word what he said about people hoping for Trump to fail?

Nevermind. I don't feel like getting mass quoted on this.

Seems like he's advocating for something more along the lines of prisoner rehab. Which is a larger discussion on whether or not someone believes a criminal can be rehabilitated.

Sex addiction rehab is not a step for change though. It isn't even science.

As much as I like Bryan, no. It's not about being bigger. Fuck them. They are sexual predators.

yea no. there's no second chances for things like this. they can show the world they're truly sorry by making up for it, possibly becoming some kind of advocate and speaking about sexual assaults in unis or schools or whatever, and the public can look upon these people with slightly less disdain, but you can't just apologize for ruining peoples' lives forever.

Are you arguing on behalf them or your own guilty conscious? That's what I ask whenever I see shit like this.

Fuck this.

The full statement here is not nearly as inflammatory, though the issue he's missing is that they cannot be trusted in positions of power again.

At some point, when you reach a certain age, and you have continued behaving a certain way, you are completely and utterly irredeemable for all intents and purposes. Maybe you could change, and maybe you have. But it's too late to come back from 30+ years of predatory behavior at that point. It's absolutely ridiculous to act as if not forgiving those people means that you're "unforgiving".

Not trying to be a dick here, but why would you listen to what he has to say anyway? Because he plays a cool character in a tv show that you like?

I don't understand the influence people allow actors to have over themselves.

I am glad I never made any type of hero from this guy or his characters.
Dude is sounding more like the bad uncle that ruins Thanksgiving every year caping for scumbags like he does.

the US less so but generally we live in a society believing in rehabilitation. As such they should be able to earn another chance but not at the cost of alienating their victims and those who are still suffering from their actions.

This seems really entitled, like somehow he thinks these men are owed forgiveness if they do the certain thing and atone in the prescribed manner.

This is a very nuanced and conditional statement:

"It would take time, it would take a society to forgive them, and it would take tremendous contrition on their part," Cranston said. "And a knowingness that they have a deeply rooted psychological and emotional problem and it takes years to mend that. If they were to show us that they put the work in and were truly sorry and making amends and not defending their actions but asking for forgiveness then maybe down the road there is room for that. Maybe so. Then it would be up to us to determine, case by case, whether or not this person deserves a second chance."

I hate that internet rage culture can't handle such a statement. There's a lot of "work" he's asking for both men.

My opinion is that both deserve jail time at least. But Cranston's statement is not outlandish.

Does he not know Spacey raped a 14 year old?

Weinstein is one story, but Spacey needs to be seriously punished.
