The subject of transferring in college athletics has always been a tricky one. Some believe that the student-athletes should have the right to go wherever they want. It is their future, after all. Others worry that this would lead to some impulsive decisions and tampering within college athletics.

The way a transfer works currently is that a student-athlete must alert his or her school prior to transferring. Then, that school can block the student-athlete from having contact with certain other schools. In terms of college football, that often means conference opponents and any schools on the schedule in the near future. Those days are in the past, or at least they will be very soon. As of Wednesday, the NCAA's Division I council approved a proposal that will switch the transferring process to a "notification-of-transfer" system.

The NCAA also announced revised redshirt rules, which would allow players to participate in up to four games without losing a year of eligibility.

Under the new transfer policy, when a student-athlete informs a school that he or she wishes to transfer, that institution has two business days to enter that athlete's name into a national database. Once the student-athlete's name is in the database, other coaches from any school can contact that individual. It's no longer up to the school to determine which university the student-athlete can talk to. Justin Sell, the chairman of the Division I Transfer Working Group and South Dakota State's athletic director, sees this as a big win for the athletes.

"The membership showed today that it supports this significant change in transfer rules," said Justin Sell. "I'm proud of the effort the Transfer Working Group put forth to make this happen for student-athletes, coaches and schools." While some coaches may not be pleased with this rule change, there is no question it gives more freedom and independence to the student-athlete.

The one caveat is that conferences can still enforce their own transfer rules, but doing so may factor into a student-athlete's decision to steer clear of schools in that conference. In order to prevent any sort of tampering by coaches or administrators after this rule change, tampering with a current student-athlete at a different school is now a Level 2 violation.

The rule changes will take effect on Oct. 15 of this year.

Last part implies a conference could dictate itself (at the risk of becoming persona non grata). Also implies violations if teams "tamper" with other schools players (meaning contact players to entice them to transfer to your school)

It's touchy. Only because basically G5 schools will be further affected and treated as a minor league system for the P5. I get the spirit of the change, though, for the individual student. I'm sure P5 schools will find ways to wink and nudge to rising star G5 talent after a couple years in college. And really more specifically, this is about a coach trying to get their players to follow them when they leave a school.

Is immediate eligibility being addressed here? Because that would be the final thing to ensure an internal minor league system. Especially if other measures aren't put into place to allow more flexibility for the school to refill their rosters. Either more protections or just adopt a full on "free-agency" like pro systems so that at least a school has a chance to recover a bit after losing players.

Did they address what happens if other schools don't want the player? As in, they declare their intent to transfer, the big schools they want ignore them, can they stay put or do they have to go?

So maybe add this to the list of improper benefits Scott Pruitt has received.

One aide helped book his travel to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., where Mr. Pruitt had secured seats near the 50-yard line for the face value of $175 each, documents show. The tickets, for Mr. Pruitt and his wife and two children, were purchased five days before the sold-out New Year's Day game this year.

Mr. Pruitt bought the tickets, the records show, from a special allotment for the University of Oklahoma, which appeared in the game against the University of Georgia. Tickets for equivalent seats were on sale on the secondary market for as much as seven times the price paid by Mr. Pruitt, data from two ticket companies show.

The aide who helped book his travel, Millan Hupp, told congressional investigators recently that Renzi Stone, a university regent who runs a large marketing firm with energy industry clients that include the American Petroleum Institute and GE Oil and Gas, had assisted Mr. Pruitt in getting access to the tickets.

Most people probably don't know because the media only ever asks him about hunting or pirates or for wedding advice and shit like that, but yeah...it wasn't exactly a well-kept secret around here.

to be honest its really not that bad. Juco's is the Bill Snyder way.
I don't think anyone has been able to get the production out of JUCO's that Bill Snyder has. I'm just saying that 9 transfers that you're looking for a great deal of production from is not a great way to start the season. I think we all knew Tenneseee would be awful this year, I just didn't realize the situation was that dire.

I feel like JUCOs in year one isn't so bad. You can't expect to use them for sustained success, but if they buy you a year or so to recruit the players you want for your system, that should be fine.

On the Fullcast, Holly brought up the very real possibility of Kiffikins taking the UNC job after Fedora gets fired, and holy shit I started screaming in fright.

- Kiffikins at UNC would immediately own the state, and for sure kick our asses every year. Dopey Dave can't compete against the pure charisma that is Lane "Joey Freshwater" Kiffin.

- I've started to grow fond of Richt's Miami (helps that we don't play them very often), and The U's resurgence would end as Kiffin steals the good south Florida recruits and then starts winning division titles

So yeah, I'm fucking terrified. Stay away from the ACC Lane kthx. Go to the SEC and scare the shit out of Lord Saban.

Mike Leach is Extremely Normal

Featuring this gem:

You got the guys on the right, you don't agree with us and you're against us, and you say anything and no, it's gotta be exactly like this. With guys on the left the same thing. Well, somewhere in the middle you have a group that says this is all screwed up. You're not just framed within these little categories, and any thought and idea you might have—go ahead and offer it up and feel free to. But you know, discuss and exchange ideas and then you get the opportunity to learn something, maybe they learn something, and at least you open your mind to a variety of things. And I think both the left and right are somewhat against that.

So where do we think the train pulls into station next season?

As mentioned above, if Fedora is fired from UNC the Lane Train would be a shockingly good fit.

$10 to the first person who gets me a photo of Kiffikins on Franklin Street hitting on undergrads.

Okay coming in hot, I know football isn't too far away and sadly we don't have a good NCAA videogame anymore, but one of yall PS4 owners can be a lucky winner of a Madden Closed Beta code. I got an extra via JP Kellams - works for EA, formerly of Platinum - and my brother didn't want to do the install etc. I figure I'd rather play some free football, give some feedback. Only other restriction is no streaming. Watch out for a Giftbot post.

Turns out it was an alt account set up for free stuff and giveaways.

I reported it when I realized posted had never posted in this thread, had two total posts and was clearly following Giftbot for freebie posts.

I should have just asked if anyone wanted it but figured we didn't have that busy enough of a thread that the giveaway would give everyone a fair shake. Love and learn. Sucks though

Your heart was in the right place Tebunker!
Good news is the chud hadn't claimed the code so I sent it to one of the regulars in the thread.

I played the beta some more today and it only enforced how much more I want an NCAA Football game. I cannot reconcile that they cannot figure a way to make the game and not hose players or their likenesses. Madden is almost too much and it felt overly complex.

I was really just pining for the days long gone of simple play selection, none of the tv presentation etc. Way too many button prompts and buttons do so many things in different contexts. I just want to turn all that shit off and play some sim-like football. I want to make VCU in to a football school and take them to the Playoffs, or promote some other FCS school, win the sunbelt, then win the Mac or MW, then realign in to the Big 12 or PAC and win that.

http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...n-state-qb-tyler-hilinski-had-cte-parents-say

Some excerpts:

Speaking Tuesday to NBC's "Today," Mark and Kym Hilinski said the Mayo Clinic conducted the autopsy on Tyler, who died at 21 on Jan. 16 in Pullman, Washington. Police say Hilinski shot himself in the head with a rifle that belonged to a former teammate. The autopsy findings showed Stage 1 CTE.

Mark Hilinski told "Today" that the medical examiner determined Tyler "had the brain of a 65-year-old, which is really hard to take." Tyler Hilinski's parents said their son exhibited no obvious signs leading up to his suicide, and Tyler had never fired a gun until the day before his death. But they told Sports Illustrated that Tyler had become less responsive to calls and text messages late last season and after a family vacation to Mexico in January.

Brain of a 65 year old, good God.

I dont doubt football causes brain injuries, I just wish had more studies on non athletes on CTE, all the data right now is heavily skewed.

I'm pretty sure the reason they can say "he has the brain of a 65 year old man" is because they have decades of brain scans on normal people from which they can form a baseline.

Im not doubting brain age stuff, I just wish we had more data on CTE in general. Right now most of that research comes from football players because its a fairly new thing weve discovered. No doubt the gen pop has CTE, I want to see how much higher (im betting significantly) it is from other athletes and non alike.

I mean I'm probably not going to let my future children play tackle football if it's still around.

My only concussions have been sports related. Kicked in the head playing soccer in 4th grade, knocked unconscious during wrestling in high school, and kicked in the head playing flag football in college.
