Episode 6, holy shit, I did not expect
this convo between Che and Shades to be so damn affecting, this completely recontexualizes their relationship since the season began, goddamn

I just got there and my jaw dropped when
Che dropped that shit. That changes everything about these two.

First you think Che just being a good friend/henchmen, where he's simply the character to continue the underlying question set up in Season 1, where we're just wondering why in the hell Shades isn't running things when he's the most competent dude in the room.

But at the same time as I'm watching this season, I'm like damn, why does this dude care so much? Why is he so loyal to him? And most importantly, what is up with his weird beef with Mariah since Day 1, where he's always purposely trying to upset her? Almost as if he's jealous?

Now it all makes fucking sense!

I'm still wondering why Shades isn't trying to run everything though. He's probably the only guy who could keep the whole thing together from season to season without it all falling apart.

Though I don't know if he'll openly admit it, I think ultimately he's fine being #2, you're less of a target that way for one thing. And this particular #2 position is as good as it gets, since he's Mariah's partner and lover.

Do you see Luke or Bushmaster going for Shades? Nope. All they care about is Mariah. Granted, Bushmaster has personal beef with her, but you get my point; they only care about the person who's actually running things.

Also, as he said to Che, he truly does want to go legit himself, so no need to be that type of dude anyways

He's also not being entirely honest with himself about some stuff, so who knows if he really does want to go legit.

I mean, I feel like he is kinda lying to Che in that convo though. Or at least to himself.

If I had to pick, it'd be the latter then. Well, guess I'll see as I dig deeper into the show!

That IGN review makes absolutely no sense to me, this season has been excellent so far

EDIT:

Omg, the near-reveal that Tilda is Pistol Pete's daughter is horrifying, no wonder her relationship with her mother sucks.

I will preface this by saying that I do not know how someone going on for purely a "super hero" thing will like it but....
In my opinion this has been one of the best all around seasons out of all of the Netflix Marvel adaptions.
The story was on solid all the way through with
a light hearted intermission with Danny and some Power Man Iron Fist love
and some rock solid and seriously on point acting performances.
I fucking have grown to love Misty and really can't wait to get more of her, and
Colleen was dialed in much better in her brief appearance

how is it? because the second half of season 1 went downhill for me.

I'm nearly done Episode 7, it's amazing so far. And from what I saw from the reviews, the 2nd half is apparently dope as well.

No, JJS2 has nothing to do with this

also i love loras tyrell please tell me iron fist in there.

Unfortunately.

Yea, this season is pretty compelling so far. It was kinda rocky in the first episode and a half, but it started smoothing out after that and has been very good up through episode 8 (which is where I stopped).

I personally thought the second season of JJ was an abhorrent trainwreck and really hated that i put time into watching it.
As far as Danny, fuck the haters, I thought the way he is used is great.

JJS2 was great. We'll see about Danny, at least I'm hearing he's inoffensive this time around

That reveal though, I knew he loved that dude.

Of course man. Of course. Niggas for life :(

Is season 2 better than season 1?
I liked season 1 but it was sloooooow and CottonMouth was awesome but they destroyed him to create a shitty villain.

OK my final verdict on the season:

Good:
+ Alfre Woodard KILLED it as she always does. She made even a lot of the hokey shit watchable.
+ Great musical choices
+ Bushmaster was a total badass and way more interesting than I expected
+ Mike Colter continue to excel as Luke
+ Intriguing set-up for S3
+ Surprisingly good CGI for the most part, especially the scenes involving fire which normally look terrible in TV shows
+
Iron Fist appearance was fun, they had easy, relaxed chemistry

Bad:
- Pacing continues to be awful in the majority of episodes. I love that Netflix lets their shows run whatever length they like, but I feel like something as workmanlike as Luke Cage would actually benefit from the restriction of 42 minute episodes. None of these episodes needed to run 55-65 mins.
- Too many musical performances. They're cool and everything but there are so many of them and they just add more time onto episodes that are already too fucking long.
- Too. Many. Episodes. Netflix is clearly more concerned with totting up more hours streamed than producing concise content
- Subplots, subplots, subplots. Way too many, and too many of them were dull or irritating. Nowhere near as bad as Iron Fist's business bullshit, but still pretty bad. I found myself mentally checking out a LOT. Who gives a shit about some plastics company being sold? lmao
- Action sequences were mostly forgettable apart from a few moment
- Tone wavers all over the place. There's some super goofy shit in this show and it's often followed up with something super unpleasant and it just creates a weird mood whiplash.
- Marvel Netflix's weird approach to sex continues. We can stab a guy's face off but can't show a tit, ass or dick? Hmmm. At least there weren't any cringey sex scenes with nudity strategically covered up (looking at you, Punisher), but still strange.
- The script is so on the nose with exposition. Rather than let the audience figure out a character for themselves there are like 15 scenes in this season where a character straight-up spoonfeeds the audience another character's mental state/problem/whatever, and it's just so goddamn lazy.
-
The Godfather homage in the final episode made me eyeroll something fierce. They namedropped Don Corleone and it was cool, but actually redoing the door slam ending made me laugh out loud. Again, this show has no subtlety at all, and you can tell they thought they were being really clever with it.

Picked up a bit in the last few episodes, but overall it underlines pretty much everything that's wrong with Netflix Marvel shows. On one hand they're exhausting to binge-watch but I don't think I would stick with it if it was a typical weekly show. 8 episode seasons, PLEASE.

As a Jamaican I find the Patois this season to be grading, almost offensive. This must be what English people felt like watching Mary Poppins.

I could tolerate Luke's terrible acting and lack of charisma in season one because everyone else was way more interesting but it seems like he's getting more screen time...how unfortunate. This dude actually dabbed....like...why?

The Claire/Luke scenes are too damn much too. They are both just awful.

I still can't take Juice seriously as Shades. I just don't buy it. I love Mariah though. Lol at her shitting on Pusha Che constantly.

I am kinda glad the Jamaican accents aren't "authentic".

Imagine ambushing a one armed woman and losing. Misty has some shitty co-workers. She deserves better....and more screentime.
