So I mess around making hiphop, and want to try making music that would fit a tv show or movie. Been a year since I made anything cause I've been grinding at my job, and now want to get back to it.
Despite not actually making music I have spent the year buying all the good software I heard about on Music Radar. Bought Kontakt, had FL Studio from years ago, just finished off paying for Serum (Splice rent-to-own is great). I am trying not to go on a spending spree and actually sit down to learn the synth/ DAWs, but my friend has Massive and it's tempting.
I have no music training, and only have started learning about music theory from youtube videos. Before then I just punched in notes that sounded good.
I totally understand the grinding at work equalling less music time. My last job was physically and mentally draining, around 5-6 years ago I all but stopped musicing, fell into a bit of depression and started playing games a bit too much. 20+ years will do that I reckon. My new career is nowhere near as physically demanding and I have had a resurgence of desire to muck about with music again... haven't touched a game in months (although some upcoming titles will surely change that, I'll have to find a balance)!
RE: gear acquisition syndrome... It's tough. At least Massive is cheap but if you like NI stuff maybe one of the Komplete bundles would be a good look, fill in some gaps you may have and can be had for a decent price from time to time... At least your wants are fairly simple- I'm looking at new monitors next (2K+), another Apollo (would like a quad rack to ease load for real time channels, I have a Duo SF 8 and a Duo Twin, DSP stays maxed without even touching using plugs in DAW), a Dangerous Source/DBox, some mix bus hardware (Silver Bullet at the top or maybe a Fatso), a RME BFP for my iPad, moar UAD plugs and Satellites, a 8/16 fader controller, Softube Console 1, a decent hardware EQ, more preamps, some HD 650s or DT1990s and another set of DT770s... never fucking ends lol! I will say that what I have is more than enough and extremely capable- outside of more room treatment and (arguably) monitors I know I don't
need any of the above. Still want :)
I can envision some laid back raps, on the second track esp. Second track could also stand a bit of an intro, something to ease into the track proper. Arrangement is good, maybe a bit more variation with the drums and a couple extra parts to add some movement/energy and some eq/dynamic adjustments might bring some enhancements. You are on the right track, keep at it!
Okay, I need to get my work job done so I can get back to making noise!
