Vektor took a while to grow on me but I have Terminal Redux and enjoy that. Latter Death is good but I do prefer their earlier material a bit more. Of course Enslaved as mentioned, and finally, Dream Theaters Images and Words. Pull Me Under being the most accessible song DT has but Metropolis and Under a Glass Moon are pretty awesome too. I used to have more DT, but ditched them and really don't regret it. Ne Obliviscaris is pretty bad ass but i dont own anything from them yet unfortunately. Think I've listened to Urn and Portal of I from them. I need to buy Mayhem in Blue from Hail Spirit Noir. Love that album but haven't bought it yet.

Progressive is typically not my thing. Here is a good use of the words pretentious and wanky. However, done right, or in a specific instance it can be great. Progressive power metal is just going too far lol but tack progressive onto death metal or black metal and it's easier to digest for me.

This Tribulation album seemed a bit toothless in the early tracks, but the second half is actually pretty damn good with Lacrimosa as a standout. That's on first listen, will go back to it more.

So checking out Khemmis for the first time. New album seems ok, maybe a little too pretty. Checking out Absolution now and this seems more my speed.

Progressive power metal can work really well, Sacred Blade - Of the Sun + Moon is always a solid reccomendation for anyone

Shit, bummer news about Vinnie Paul. Very young too, RIP.

Favorite progressive metal albums?
Does Amorphis - Elegy count? If so, that one. Absolute classic.

Prog is really not really my favourite style at all though. But I enjoy some prog-power like Symphony X (The Odyssey, Divine Wings of Tradegy and Twilight of Olympus being my favourites), Adagio (very similar to Symphony X, love Underworld and Sanctus Ignis), and Ayreon's Into the Electric Castle.
For "regular" prog metal I really like Control Denied's Fragile Art of Existence, and later Death.

New album from Hatchet is legit one of the best thrash releases this year. Cannot wait to see them again with Exmortus

Song of the Day

RIP Vinnie. I'm a Pantera fan and collectively, for me anyway, they are one of the best metal bands ever. They were my high school and college years. I saw them with Skid Row in high school and with Pro-Pain while off to college and both times they put on an incredibly high energy show. I'm a fan of Rex. He's a big reason I learned to play in the first place. Dime of course. Early Phil has really good vocals, not so much now. And that leaves Vinnie. I know shit about drums, but I know what I like. Dude used tree trunks for sticks and beat the living shit out of his kit every song. His kick patterns were awesome and I think Primal Concrete Sledge really shows off what I love about his style. So that is today's tune, enjoy!

Saw Tomb Mold and Of Feather and Bone tonight. Sick show.

I had no idea the drummer of Tomb Mold does all the vocals. I'm always impressed by that.

Here's something you won't see me recommending very often....doom metal, but something about the cover art drew me in and the music shut the door and bound me up in a chair. They have some full lengths that I haven't checked out, but this series of four song EP's showed up on my Bandcamp feed. Their like a buck a piece, but oh so good. The price made for a really easy purchase, but don't let that fool you, these are some good tunes!

Road tripping on Saturday to take my son to Kansas to see Code Orange and these guys are openers. I hear they are good live. Still need to check em out.

Saw Alterbeast and Arkaik last night. Soft crowd (<100 people) but they were decent. Arkiak was the headliner but half the people left after Alterbeast. Arkiak sounded decent but decided to cut the set short by 20 min and only played like 25 minutes. Alterbeast was pretty good but they were having trouble with the bass player (a computer lol) during sound check. So I lost some respect in that regard, using a bass track instead of a live player but don't know the make up of the band. Maybe the bassist couldn't make that show?

New Satan coming in hot!!!

Sounds just as good as the last two records!

Today is the 20th anniversary of one of the best avant-garde metal albums ever

As a bassist this albums blows me away, some of the sickest bass playing I've ever heard. And the tone! Such a heavy bass tone. This album and Erosion of Sanity are the two Gorguts albums I can just listen to over and over and over again.

Favorite progressive metal albums?

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, *Master of Puppets, Dreaming Neon Black, This Godlesss Endeavor, Voice of the Void, My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Nocturnes and Requiems, Operation Mindcrime, Crack the Skye, Sleep at the Edge of the Earth, Biomech.

*I know this is typically considered simply a "thrash" album, yet it had very progressive tendancies throughout.

I would not personally lump Master with a progressive label since collectively it is just not there. Justice drove more in the direction.

Jason's bass tone fit so well with that albums material too, it is a shame it was left out. I love his sound on the Black Album, particularly on My Friend of Misery, that full sound is missing from AJFA

So I guess the atmospheric black metal youtube channel got taken down? I can find Black Metal Promotions but not the other one.

Was one of my favorite channels :(
What the hell? That blows. Lightfox177's channel is down too which was basically the same thing. Hope it comes back up. I really liked that channel. Discovered a lot of cool stuff there.

Black Metal Promotions is still up, which is cool, but yeah. I don't know why these were taken down. From waht I gather, you basically have to give your permission to be hosted. I think ABM charged $10 as well, which is pretty cheap as far as advertising goes.

Youtube can get fucked.
