What the, just copy pasting this post I saw on the SA Forums:

Alfa Systems, developers of the Castle of Shikigami series put out another shmup on Switch, titled Sisters Royale: I'm Being Harassed by 5 Sisters and It Sucks. Below, is an article about the Japanese release, but the only video footage I could find is a 1-hour youtube LP. No US release has been discussed or announced:

Very cool. Backed immediately. The tate grip Jeremy Parish has been working on launched on kickstarter. Been keeping an eye out for this.

If you're looking for something to pick up in the current steam sale, here's a list of shmups on steam that I've enjoyed.

Blue Revolver
eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package
Mushihimesama --¦¦-- 1.5 dlc
The Hurricane of the Varstray --¦¦-- Threat of Third Force DLC
DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu
Deathsmiles
Eschatos and Judgement Silversword Bundle
Bullet Soul: Infinite Burst
Neko Navy
Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo
Crimzon Clover
Danmaku Unlimited 2
Space Moth DX
Jet Buster
Bullet heaven 2
Fire Arrow Plus
Graze Counter
Zenodyne R
Trouble Witches
Armed Seven
Terra Feminarum
QP Shooting Dangerous
AngerForce: Reloaded
Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo
Tenta Shooter
Rysen
Star Saviors
Barrage Musical ~A Fantasy of Tempest~

This is a twin stick shooter rather than a shmup but it should scratch the same itch. Thought I'd mention it just in case there's someone reading who hasn't played it.
One of the best games ever made and currently less than a fiver - Nex Machina

Not steam, and only 20% discounted, but there are a couple of decent shmups on sale on dlsite if you've already played everything on steam to death.

Battle Traverse
Ten and Till

I was thinking of picking up Danmaku 3 on Switch as it's on sale.

The game reviewed very well but you guys seem kind of down on it. Why the division?

I've got Ikaruga and ZeroGunner and love them both. Any recommendations for a shooter noob with a Switch? Should I go Strikers 1945 next or what?

I feel like Danmaku Unlimited 3 is great. It's just a departure from the mechanics in 2 and Graze Mode is pretty hard. The PC version has some issues with wireless controllers and resolution scale outside of supported resolutions, but it's not big deal. I believe the switch version has some updates to it not made to the PC version. I think it has native wide screen support now and the difficulty was adjusted. I'd dive in. The bullet patterns are fun, the aesthetics are excellent, and if you like metal then the soundtrack will definitely be to your liking.

Gunbird is the easiest Psikyo shooter. Gunbird 2, Dragon Blaze, Strikers, you can't go wrong with any of them. Except maybe Sol Divide.

Aero Fighters 2, Alpha Mission 2 and Zed Blade are good, too.

Did anyone here pick up Hypersentinel?

No real buzz about it but it looks cool and it's also on sale on Switch.

I still want somebody with an impression on this

QUICK INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:

I can tell you that Danmaku 3 is a lot easier than Blazing Star, which was my first shmup on the Switch and which gave me quite a bit of difficulty. The presence of built in difficulty modes is a nice touch (the Neo Geo shmups have this too, but they're buried in menus and I'm not sure how much a difference they actually make), but DU3 just feels more fair generally: very easy to see bullets, a great and easy-to-understand scoring system, two modes of play, and I love that I can actually see the core of my ship in this. So I know just when I'm going to die and there's no doubt that it's my fault (heh).

Music is excellent and energetic, graphics are great, and I love playing it in vertical mode (Tate mode, right?). Definitely a good pickup for someone that wants to get into bullet hell shmups, especially at $6.99. Would be worth it at full price too, based on my first few minutes trying to play through a few levels. Just make sure you start playing it on easy and, as you get better, turn up the difficulty and start playing for max score. It's awesome.

Wrong game, I wanted Pawarumi impressions. Should have clarified.

In pawarumi, you have three different coloured weapons and three different coloured enemies.
Using the green coloured weapon on a green enemy will rebuild your shield, using a different coloured weapon (I forget which one) on that green enemy will kill them quicker than the other weapons, and using another coloured weapon against that enemy will build your bomb gauge.
The weapons you have to use to achieve each desired effect is different for each specific coloured enemy.

As you can imagine, it's a bit of an effing nightmare remembering what colour to use on which enemy in a certain situation when you're trying to dodge bullets.

I wouldn't bother, personally, but if you've got the kind of brain that won't be tripping over itself, I imagine it'd feel great once you'd mastered it and everything was flowing.

You can run through normal not worrying about that mechanic for the most part, just shooting things, but you'd have to master the colour system to get the most out of it. My brain is crap with colours, I'd always be getting my colours mixed up no matter how much time I put in.

I was thinking of picking up Danmaku 3 on Switch as it's on sale.

The game reviewed very well but you guys seem kind of down on it. Why the division?

Personally, I liked the second game a whole lot more, there was a fun risk/reward of getting in nice and close to the bigger enemies and the bosses to recharge you hyper.
This new one, you're encouraged to just hang around the bottom of the screen hugging bullets for the most part.
The third game is also a lot harder, while I'm not great at these games, I'm not too bad either and it took me 14 hours to 1cc the easiest mode on the easiest difficulty.

Feedback gathered from the pc players was used to rebalance the switch version by all accounts, so you should be OK on that front.

If you've got a pc, you can pick up the second game for 79p at the minute. Might be worth doing that, if you don't like it then you won't like the third game - https://store.steampowered.com/app/280560/Danmaku_Unlimited_2/
Exceed 3rd is a lot like the danmaku unlimited games but much better, I'd recommend that over either game - https://store.steampowered.com/app/207400/eXceed_3rd__Jade_Penetrate_Black_Package/

Which of these aren't Bullet Hell style? I am more into traditional style shmups like say Blazing Star above.

I consider Mushihimesama normal original pretty oldschool with fewer and faster bullets. I don't think it becomes bullet hell until you move up to maniac.
The Team Grybanser Fox games are more old school, jet buster, fire arrow plus, zenodyne r.
Angerforce: Reloaded plays a lot like a psikyo shmup.

I picked up Danmaku 3.

I typically don't play bullet hell and there's something less satisfying about having a gun that fills the screen without any powerups.

Anyone tried that new indie WW1 Horror-themed shmup just released on Switch? 1921-something don't remember the exact title.

Is it legit? Online leaderboards?
Its price is similar to ACAs, cheap

It's on sale on the eShop. I read reviews but I'm really interested in what Era thinks.

I looked at reviews at it seems mediocre at best.

I don't think anyone should bother with it unless they already have all the other great SHMUPs on Switch and are dying for more.

...and that seems unlikely given that we get at least one new or classic SHMUP like every week.

honestly, not a ton. i'm just getting back into this. my memory of shmups is limited to old NES and SNES games, plus whatever I found in the arcades when I was a kid. i've been enjoying the hell out of Danmaku 3 because it doesn't have power-ups, but totally understand why that might be a turn off. for me, it's just another way of throwing you into the mix and saying, "okay, this game is pretty clean and simple. what can you do with it?" i like Into the Breach for a similar reason.

thinking about getting Ikaruga or Dragon Blaze next, but I have to admit I was really turned off by how crazy the difficulty of Blazing Star got after a point. I can 1CC the game up to stage 5 and then I'm toast almost no matter what. i get the feeling Dragon Blaze is similar? that's another reason I'm enjoying Danmaku 3: the cleanness of the lines and art and the application of the graze/spirit mode is a winning combo imo.

Gunbird is a great game to go with because it can be challenging as hell on higher difficulties but it's by far the easiest on the lower ones. Plus it's just cute and funny.

Samurai Aces is very similar to Gunbird but it's harder.

Ikaruga and Dragon Blaze are two of the hardest on the eShop.

Tengai is one of my favorites but is absolutely brutal.

If you're looking for an awesome modern SHMUP I highly recommend Graceful Explosion Machine. It's pretty different from the others in structure and I like that it's a ton of shorter missions rather than a longer continuous run of stages. Very addicting.

Rive is also fantastic, although it's also really different from all the rest. Very challenging but because it's a big, long story campaign and has near-constant checkpoints and no lives it never feels unmanageable and you're always making progress, even if it's just a little at a time. Truly underrated.

I think this is what turned me off about Rive. It takes great skill to make a balanced, difficult game, something that's hard but fair.
I think filling your game with checkpoints is a cop out, an admission that you didn't manage it.
I didn't enjoy my time playing Rive, it was all very stop/start, felt like I was just chipping away, slowly pushing forward to the next checkpoint at times, learning nothing for subsequent playthroughs.

Maybe it's telling that the achievement for 1cc'ing the game is called "We never actually tested this".

thanks for the recommendations man. I've been eyeing both GEM and Rive, so it's good to hear they're both good pickups. I still have a little credit leftover from a trade-in, so I might grab one or the other this weekend. Really loving what a great little arcade machine the Switch is.

GEM is probably less divisive than Rive based what clippa posted, although both games have a lot of fans in the eShop threads. I'd go with that one first, especially since it plays closer to the other SHMUPs you're playing and might help you get better at those games.

I do love the Switch Arcade. My dream is to make a a mini arcade cabinet stand with a working control panel.

Something like this:

a3cb435b80f5f9a3aa4e65a29243c397.jpg

IMG_0663.jpg

IMG_0657.jpg

Needs a way to hold the Switch vertical, though. I think the top design could be altered to accommodate both orientations.

You could probably either gut an 8bitdo PCB or just use a Magic NS + USB C adapter for the control panel.

This is just absurd but I love it:

Thanks guys, adios 1917 then.

HHH, between reviews and wom, I heard Hyper Sentinel is super disappointing and full of gameplay breaking gutted/screwed up design choices.

Btw,
Everyone not quite fond of bullet hells/danmakus looking for something in the middle between classic vertical (but with full screen 4:3 ar) with great gfx, flow and satisfying gameplay should grab
AEROFIGHTERS 2 /SONIC WINGS 2.
One of my fave shmups and NEOGEO games.

Stay away from AF3/SW3 tho.

You'll wanna check out Satazius, Super Hydorah, and Infinos Gaiden for more traditional horizontal shmups on Steam. If you're OK with vertical, then I'll recommend the Alltynex Trilogy and Eschatos. For something a little weirder but still not a bullet hell, I'll recommend In Extremis and Rym 9000.

Eschatos is amazing! Is that not bullet hell though? I have no personal preference so the line is very wide and blurry but I remember it being a bit bullety.
I suppose it has some bullet hell to it. It was first described to me as a PC Engine homage in some ways and I think it does feel like a late PCE game in its bullet patterns too.

Okay, just how good/bad is the experience of playing Zero Gunner 2- on Switch if your only memory of playing the game before was about a decade ago on a Dreamcast CD-R a couple times.

I was really looking forward to that game's release until I read about how messed up the port is from the original. With the patches is it at least still fun for a relative noob?

I had never played it before but it's fantastic IMHO. There were a few updates after it's release so you may find it better than it was reported at launch.
