I absolute love DMC's portrait of hell, some bits are twisted demonic shit, and other bits clean and angelic

Painkiller was a blast when it came out, fast paced, great controls, the first ragdolls and great weapon impact (you pierced people with wooden stake that stuck in the bodies xD ).
I loved the game, i remember modding in a 3D radar, Elite-fashion, because there were some fun things to find in the game world (it has to be present somewhere, lost the source a long time ago).
I am certain it aged a lot visually, and i won't look at it, i want to keep my good memories :)

Yeah, the first Painkiller was such a blast and to my surprise it had a great atmosphere for such a run and shoot game.. and that last level was a masterpiece as far as level design goes in that style of games ...such a shame that the otherwise good HD remake or what the hell is that Hell and Damnation version is, they totally butchered that final level

I actually owned this:

While technically not "Hell", these seemed to be Oblivion's interpretation of it anyway:

Don't know if this counts, but the cover art from the Commodore 64 game Dante's Inferno used to creep me out a bit.

The nether in minecraft is basically hell.
And I hate it.

My most favourite hell in videogames is the deadside in Shadow Man tho. Especially the Asylum.

Not technically Hell or even an Afterlife, but Silent Hill's Otherworld acts very much the way Hell is often described as, with fire/blood/brimstone, whilst also being personalized nightmares! Probably the most inventive take on a Hell-like setting I've ever seen in a video game, especially the sheer Otherness of 1 and 3's!

It's still gorgeous. What a masterpiece!
I kinda prefer the effects they have in later games with peeling walls.

The Darkness' World War 1 Hell is my favourite cause it's unsettling, sad, and inspired.

This too. I felt so uncomfortable playing through this section.

I have nothing to add to the convo but I just want to say your thread titles always seem so provocative because of your name.

Aight time to install this. I believe i bought it on a whim a couple years ago and ive always found the visuals very interesting. Is it an interesting game in general?
Well, it's hard to say, because this game is hard and can be really frustrating, but world and story are absolutely worth it. Gameplay is some sort of survival game, you need to collect Colour to survive, but at the same time, you need to give Colour to the world in order to get it and survive. It's really not a typical modern game, it gives a very little information and you need to learn gameplay details by yourself (or read walkthroughs), really easy to stuck and die at first and start from the scratch. But again, story and world is really deep and unique, I haven't seen anything like this

The area in your pic (the gates of hell) is pretty cool looking, but inferno itself is pretty dull. Just rocks and spiky vines as far as I recall. Doesn't really fit with the mechanical look of most of the demons in the game either. I always thought the angels/paradiso aesthetics were far cooler and more unified.
Well, that part was still cool imo because it stands out from the blue ish/yellow environments from the other areas of the game, lots of bright red, the small platforms she goes through is the johnson forest mentioned on the first game.but definetly it would be nice to revisit hell and go to another place with mechanical stuff. some Angels also have mechanical motiffs btw with them getting it from humanity.

I can't decide because every time I encounter hell in a videogame it's the same stereotypical lava and fiery cavern art style I've seen every time.

I wish developers can be a bit more experimental with hell and actually I liked that film with Robin Williams about a man who journeys to hell to save his wife. That version of hell is a bit unique, could we get something like that in a video game?

The English Wilderness
The original Doom and (because of the source material, more than anything) Dante's Inferno.

Modern Doom, on the other hand, really dropped the ball. Instead of a place of eternal torment, it just gave us Generic Demon World.

Nebulous in Jet Moto 2 has a cliche depiction, but it's the contrast with heaven and music switch that makes it great lol.

The peeling walls were the best thing about Homecoming(and one of the only two good things), but even that was ripped straight out of the movie.

As much flak as the movie gets, I still consider it a fantastic movie in its own right.

We got one!

It's a mess! And was always gonna be a mess because Konami lost the original dev code for the games./spoiler]

I'd kill for a 3 remake in Fox Engine though.

Limbo in DmC is aces. I mean, it's one of the most visually arresting depictions of Hell you can get in this medium, while also being actively oppressive towards the player.

Though not TRULY hell I thought Spec Ops: The Line's version of hell was very haunting with the Burj Al-Arab looking like the eye of Sauron and sand spirits screaming in terror with the creepy distorted music playing.
