Something interesting about this game is how it might arguably be the first "proper" sequel in the series.
DMC2 was a mess that almost had nothing to do with DMC1, DMC3 was a prequel, DMC4 was Capcom's attempt at trying a new thing with Nero, DmC was a reboot, the continuity is so over the place in the original 4 games you could play them in any order you want and still get the story.

This game, though, it's not only a direct sequel to Nero's story in DMC4, but it could also potentially be, if the theories are spot on, a proper sequel to DMC2's ending in regards to Dante's story.

I've been thinking about it again and let me say that I'm still extremely happy for Nero coming back. He's my favourite character of the series unironically. His half-edgy, half-earnest JRPG hero character makes him so likeable and he had so much more room to grow and I'm glad that they're going full speed ahead with it, especially considering how 250% bullshit his battle theme is. He's not a full dork like Dante, he's serious about almost everything he does in an almost moronic but endearing way.

It also makes his badass moments so much better because it's not what is expected from him like Dante is, he does it because that's just what his abrasive style is

Remember this ? I remember hooting all the way through this cutscene when I saw Nero doing it.

I'm so ready folks

The lyrics seems pretty tailored towards Nero only. Unless Nero is 250% the focus of the story it would be weird to have it for other characters

Whether it truly follows up on DMC2 or not, you're right on the money with the likelihood that this finally going to be a game that will move the story in a meaningful way. And well, it has to, if it's truly going to be a "conclusion" to the Sons of Sparda plot arc.

Either way, I'm hoping this game can be the springboard the series needs to be able to take the story in new and interesting places in future games. It'd be even better if the Big Bad (or at least one of their dragons) survived, so we could make sure we have someone who will be a thorn in Nero, Dante and co.'s sides for at least another game.

Itsuno's magnum opus

The sons of Sparda swan song

Big daddy budget

4-5 years of development team

The OG crew is back

The greatest style action game of the "Heisei" period

Fastest DMC game ever

The deepest of lore

Punished Nero, punished Dante, punished + corrupted Vergil

Pull my god damn Devil Trigger

Graphics that make other AAA games cry .... at 60 frames per second

On paper... there is no way they screw this up. It's difficult not to get too excited for this game as fan of the genre.

it 100% is the first proper sequel which is great
dmc2 was a totally unrelated game that got dmc slapped on it, dmc3 was a soft reboot (prequel), dmc4 was a soft reboot(sequel)
now give me full power dante

It would be awesome to have reversible covers and all, with each three characters staging at the center.

Doubt it would happen but it would still be cool. Can't wait for gamescom and whenever the will have more info blowout

Definitely gonna snag the collector's edition if they do announce it.

This reminf me a lot a PS2 game with the same concept made as well by Capcom:

Anyone remember this game?
Yes, it was really fun. I think I played it on PC. It's a shame it didn't get some sequels. Evolving this concept would have been very interesting.

Itsuno has said it himself that its the fastes DMC yet. Of course the game would have to come with turbo mode because right now that is not the case.

You know, while Dante giving Nero Yamato at the end of DMC4 does make sense from a story perspective, I wonder if they always had Vergil's comeback in mind and that it was one of the reasons they decided to keep Yamato with Nero and not Dante.

A scene where Vergil steals Yamato from Dante in the beginning of a hypothetical DMC5 wouldn't really make sense considering how powerful Dante is at this point in the story, but Nero getting floored by Vergil is something that's totally plausible.

Well, maybe the Devs take this concept and apply it to the third character V.
If I remember right they weren't exactly summons, but rather summons to just do an attack and then disappear.
So the summons we're attacks in other words. Like Nero did with his summon in DMC4 I think?

Make Nero's battle theme instrumental only, include the vocals when you start getting SSS-tylish.

Similar to revengeance, but I think it only did it once you got to a boss final form.

Devil Trigger is cool and all, but I really hope Nero has multiple combat themes and not the same single one repeating ad nauseam throughout the entire game, like in DMC4.

Real talk the lyrics beint dynamic to a fight in Revengeance is one of the best parts of that game. It gets me so hype to have them kick in in a fight.

I am praying DMC5 does dynamic BGMs. Whether it'd be Platinum's progressive-state's, DmC's style-performance, or something new entirely. Be a shame if it lacks it.

found this on r/dmc

https://boards.4chan.org/v/thread/421464530

anon is posting some stuff regarding DMC2's development in 3142.

Ah yeah, skimming the interviews right now.
DMC2's planner/DMC3+4's scenario writer said this after Itsuno wanted to do DMC3

"The team also wished they could have been more involved in the scenario for "DMC 2", which led to the "Let's do it right this time" attitude with "DMC 3".

Itsuno:
"There was a lot of drama over my replacing the older director, and I have nothing but bad memories about that part in particular; But basically, they said that nothing was getting done and that needed to change. The scenario hadn't been written, the cutscenes had yet to be shot, and they hadn't decided what to do about Dante's Devil Trigger. They had determined that the "Stinger" attack was essential, so at least they had someone who was going to take care of that. but none of the other attacks had been worked on at all."

"With "DMC 2", my struggle was to put out a good finished product despite joining halfway through development. During "DMC 3", I gave it my all and squeezed as much as possible into the game while telling myself that if this failed, I would probably quit the industry altogether. And with "DMC 4", I was constantly worried about the new protagonist."

"When explaining my relationship with "DMC" to people. I like to say that I'm not so much a parent to the series as I am a foster parent. Or maybe "stepmother" is more appropriate."

Lawd, the original team who worked on the game only managed to get the Stinger move done.. then Capcom threw Itsuno and another team to actually develop the game in four months.

The fact that DMC2, for all its faults, is actually playable, is a goddamn achievement that not even the very best in this industry could actually successfully pull off.

imagine developing a game for months, months, and the only thing you have to show for it is 'hey guys maybe there should be a move that closes the the distance between you and your enemy'

there are people out there who think the reboot is worse than 2. they really think that. they look at that weak ass lukewarm stinger, and go 'well at least it's not the reboot!'
seeing how much people thought Nero was Dante I don't think a lot of the people that know what DMC is have played the games

DMC4 is over a decade old. And Nero didn't leave as much of an impression as Dante had through all the games he'd been in. Not surprised people think Dante over Nero.

One of these days I'm going to scan these interviews and put them up. For any fan that wants to know more about the series, that book is essential.

So... DMC2 was practically developed in just a little over four months? Sheesh.

How long has Itsuno and team been working on DMC5 now? Since 2015 or so, right? Goddamn, this is gonna be amazing.

Itsuno was only involved with DMC2 at the end with about 4 months of development left. But it's development was probably like 18 months total. DMC2 began production as a totally different game before DMC1 was even finished. But they changed it to DMC2 once they saw the success of DMC1.

I remember reading an interview that said the original hero of what we now know as DMC2, was some dude with a green jacket. Before they just morphed him into Dante.

Hilarious.

In the DMC artbook Itsuno literally says that the main driving force he had for making DMC3 was that he didn't want to be known as "That dude who directed DMC2."

I'm imagining Itsuno going all "Now I'm motivated!" during the making of DMC3.

So that's about 14 months before. Just barely over a year... That they only managed to have Stinger done by the time Itsuno got in is just... it sounds bizarrely bad. Such a mess. I know game development is very complicated, but still.

Really makes me not want to ever touch DMC2. I'm gonna get the HD Collection on Steam hopefully before DMC5 arrives since I want to replay DMC3 and I've never played the original, but I really have no desire to play DMC2.
4 years.

About a year of Itsuno planning it on his own and 3 years of full development.
I can only imagine how great DMC5 is gonna be. All this hype is well worth it.
