Are we moving on from fanboy wars to ranking how attractive the DMC characters are? Because I'm onboard with that.

It's a solid character action game. Worth playing. Not very indicative of the Devil May Cry franchise as a whole, and it won't do a good job of getting you ready for DMC5 if that's your goal.
This post basically nails it. If you want to prepare for DMC5, 3 & 4 are your best bets. But DmC is a decent action game on its own merits.

What's wrong with being to do air combo easily?
When your character no longer needs to worry about managing their height or dropping a combo, it gets very mindless very quickly. You may as well just stay on the ground if you're not going to have to work around about gravity and that entire Z axis.

It's a spectacle action game. You shouldn't have to spend 20 hours in bloody palace practicing style/jump cancels to do cool shit.
After DMC3 and DMC4, the expectation I have when I buy a DMC game is that it's going to be a game I can put hundreds of hours into learning with all the combo/combat mechanics the game offers. It's a big part of why I hold the series in such high regards. I've got jump cancels, Exceed/Max-Act, Nero DT Summoned Sword juggles, Gilgamesh just-frames, style switching and weapon switching down, and I've still got flying guards, star raves, Lucifer and Vergil to look forward to working on next.

A game having so many mechanics to master long term is hardly a bad thing.

/DmC:DMC meanwhile barely lasted 30 hours, and it only lasted that long because I was actually trying to find something exciting in its combat to hook me.

DmC is probably a good action game if you don't really want to be challenged by combat on any technical level whatsoever.

I just played and finished this for the first time. I have no interest in the original series. Tried it when it first came out and never bothered with the series again. This reboot was fun, however some of the writing was painful.

Uncle Dante is where it's at, and I'm a sucker for brooding bad boys so Nero's got a high slot on my list too.

These DmC threads are always hilarious. It's basically boils down to fuck you for not liking what I like.

Couple facts: DMC4 was a first gen PS3 game. And it looked great and ran at 60 fps. I remember grabbing the first boss by the face and slamming him down and to see him get up and launch a mini-nuke of an explosion at 720p 60 fps was a sight to behold on my PS3. But this is also why DMC4 hasn't aged as well, what was cool in 2008 isn't so much impressive in 2018. For all intents and purposes though, DmC 2013 should have murdered it. But this thread is a perfect example that it didn't. It's arguably worse or arguably better depending on your opinion. And while DmC has the deforming environments and larger levels, remember that on it's initial release on consoles it was sub 30 fps. For a franchise to go from 60 fps to sub-fucking 30...good grief. But the Definitive Edition was much improved. 60 fps on PS4/Xbox One, and included the many gameplay changes that classic fans requested. Kudos to Ninja Theory for listening.

And for those of you thinking Capcom isn't going to take the best aspects of DmC and put them into DMC5 are going to have a rude awakening as well. You can already see the influence in just the trailer alone.

I for one think Capcom is in a great position to take the best aspects of classic DMC (2001-2008) and DmC (2013) and create something pretty fucking special for fans of these types of games. A type of game we don't get that much anymore.

But continue complaining among each other shit we've already complained to each other about for the past 6 fucking years.

Furthermore, the OP who proposed the question of "should I buy/play DmC" has already said he purchased the damn game like 10 trillion posts ago. The point of this thread has been achieved quite some time ago.

It's fine. It's not for everyone, but its competent enough if you can get past some of the questionable design decisions.

And there's still people here who think its about the hair. For fuck sake Era.

Definitive Edition is a good game worth a purchase, I would look into HD Collection afterwards, just for DMC 3.

It's the one thing all DMC fans agree on
Sadly, not true. There are people who think the first game is the worst. Like Usyren.
It was fun to play, some complain it wasn't a real DMC game but I see it as more of a reboot trying something different. Those that hate it likely also couldn't get into the new Prey or the newer Tomb Raider games thinking every game has to stick to its roots. If the game is enjoyable I like them, screw the haters.
You're assuming so much, and immediately judging people without thought.

Yes, it's the best DMC game out there.

Don't even try to @ me!
Yup I agree, its a great game and stands above the others for me. I personally didn't like emo Dante, but understood why they went that route for his characters origin. I was lucky enough to play this on Game Pass.

Shame the game didn't get the reception it deserves, Ninja Theory did a stellarjob. Had this been a different IP altogether things would have turned out differently. Ah well, at least we get DMC V now.

The game is excellent and very well done... fun gameplay and amazing level design and art direction.

One of the best in the franchise.

OK, I can kind of see that. Uncle Dante could use some more appealing costumes though.

Sleeveless Dante
Tank top Dante
DMC3-style Uncle Dante

I'm sure there are other people out there who are curious if it's worth buying given the sale price. And the answer to those people is yes, if you enjoy these sorts of games. DmC had a different look and tone to the other games in the series, but it was still great and a lot of fun. It just wasn't the game that many fans were expecting, and so it copped (unfairly, IMHO) a level of backlash that the game itself didn't deserve.

For someone who hasn't played the other games, it's a no-brainer. But even as a big fan of the series I still enjoyed it, even if it sits completely apart from the other games in terms of the series storyline.

I did a video review for the game a million years ago and while I think I was a bit too harsh on it in retrospect, I still stand by my points. I thought the level design was poor, I thought the way the game hid secrets was incredibly poorly thought out, the color-coded enemies were not a good idea, and the writing was bad in a way that is only good in comparison to other DMC games.

DE fixed a lot of what was wrong with the game but honestly I don't think I can understand the people who call it one of the best character action games ever. I think we must be coming to the genre for very different things.

If you skip the cancerous mess that is the story, you might be able to enjoy the game, if it's your first DMC but even on a gameplay level it's the worst game in the series with the exception of DMC2.

I still haven't tried DmC yet despite being a fan of action games.

I really just cant get past the character of "Donte" as some call him. He just seems so shitty and annoying. I've heard that the initial release of the game was 30FPS and had a bunch of issues with combat compared to the other games, but the Special edition fixed them?

Might give it a try before DMC5 to fully have an opinion on a failed reboot before we go back to the main timeline after 11 years.

Ninja Theory. That's why people should play DmC.

The story is AWFUL, and the platforming sucks, but it was a gorgeous end to the 360 era with dynamic new ideas in the slash-'em-up combo-crazy genre. Best DMC entry? No way. But its best bits are really damned interesting.

User Warned: Derogatory language.
OP, DMC4 is 7.49 on PSN and it's a MUCH better game.
DmC although it's good as a separate game, it's like the retarded son of DMC4

I don't like the series/character in general, but if DmC is the one with the Anakin looking guy as Dante that's the best one. I don't like the white hair weeb one.

It's excellent. It's so good that they had to make a sequel to it with the upcoming DmC5.

Bless you, lol.

Oh yeah constantly swapping styles in 4 using the dpad to style cancel is really fun.

You're right. It was.

I dunno. Maybe to have an open mind? Try something different?

DMC always did "something different". The problem with DmC is it did something different that also wasn't very good.

Bruh, I lived through the annoucement of the game. There was a very strong "#notmydante" sentiment before anyone ever touched it.

That was you not seeing the forest for the trees.

And I can find a million more tasteful ways of killing an evil priest than jumping to the altar in the middle of a ceremony and shooting the dude in the head with a smile on the face while the people watch in horror before we have any indication of the old man's true nature

Both stories are fucking trash, but the attempts to make DmC some sort of anti woman work of fiction for that particular scene is RICH coming from someone trying to put four games also filled with sexism as more tasteful stories

The only female character in this franchise I've seen treated with a shred of respect is Nico, and there's plenty of time for that change

Why are dudes so obsessed with trying to prove DmC isn't sexist? My ex was absolutely disgusted by the way women are depicted in DmC, and I always agreed before and after. I'll defer to her thoughts rather than some guy trying to excuse DmC because of arbitrary reasons. She wasn't keen on Lady's design in 4 either, but at the very least she has some agency beyond her tits and ass hanging out and you get to play as her.

Avoid DMC4 unless you enjoy playing repeat levels because the developer ran out of ideas

Wrong. They ran out of time and budget. There were no other reasons.

I have given the game a 3rd chance recently and actually am enjoying it now.

My top tips for enjoying it are : skip every cutscene - not only are they terrible with awful dialogue and story, some of them are just rude for the sake of it.

They are also a MAJOR pacing problem in the game. This is honestly my biggest complaint on the game - it is constantly just stopping, either for loading or a cutscene or whatever. Just let me play the game ffs.

Play on a higher difficult asap since there will be many more enemies and actually force you to learn the combat of the game which is really good.

I'm sorry but in what way is this game better than DMC4? Sometimes i can't believe this is even an argument.

The combat is way worse (The most important part when it comes to DMC and this genre)
The Soundtrack and Visual are an assault to all human senses.
The "story" is some of the worst ever written in media and not just games. I can't believe someone got paid to write that!
Required a re releases to "fix" massive problems with the original release. (It's still underwhelming)

Oh, i guess it kind of more complete than DMC4 but that does not make it a better game in the slightest.

On the plus side It was and still is fun seeing DmC fans doing mental gymnastics for years, trying desperately to justify this awful game. (Dante's Hair)
