I didn't see any thread for it. My social media feed has been going crazy with photos and videos of women driving in and out of Saudi Arabia for the past few days. I'll post some a bit later when I'm on my laptop.

And not to derail my own thread, but keep in mind that a lot of the women that protested for this are still in Saudi dungeons and haven't been released yet.

It's a long road to undo the last 42 years of damage but this is a step in the right direction. Yay progress!

Like you said OP, it's about time, but we can't ignore the activists whose sacrifices led to this, yet are not only oppressed by being detained, they are marginalized and demonized by the people who are now benefitting from this change.

Think of how terrible and barbaric and ass-backwards that area of the world is, remember that this is what happens when organized religion is allowed to dictate government, and remember that Republicans want the US to become the Christian version of this.

congrats for them, some malls start to paint some of the parking in pink for ladies only, but what worse some replace the disabled parking for women parking

you already did that when you mentioned them, there is other reasons why jailed them, like contacting other media and make some false news to make saudi arabia looks bad.

No other country in the region prohibited their women from driving...

Vague, bullshit accusations without providing any specifics coupled with supposed confessions that were almost certainly extracted using torture. But hey, let's give space to spread regime propaganda.

What false news?

And just FYI, even if what you said is true (it isn't), arresting people for talking to the media doesn't make it any better.

That's something.

Kinda feels like they were jailed so the royals could take full credit. There's more to it than that, no doubt, but still..

The only thing the royals hate more than the disruption of the status quo, is the disruption of the status quo while being "loud". The only reason the women in question are still jailed is because they were broadcasting everything to social media. That's my guess anyway.

This coming from the country that kidnaps children and puts them in kennels, the country where law enforcement shoots innocent people because of their skin color, where mass shootings happen almost every week but the government cares more about the feelings of gun owners than the lives of children. I could go on but I feel that's enough to say you guys are terrible, barbaric and ass-backwards in your own right.

Yeah, I get it. It's just your average monarch trying to quash dissent kind of thing.

This looks so bad and I can't stop laughing.

I wonder if they don't have parking spaces ready when one more gender is entering the SA roads, and they need to find some fast.

Agreed.

Also, there are those that don't get that not everyone are sheep that parrot what the government says. Can't accept they actually think for themselves. They must take instructions from foreign entities!

As if that's worth jailing people over.

No arguments here. I haven't been proud of the US for years. Doesn't mean I want things to continue to decline.

I would like to point out the sheer amount of public outcry there has been against the imprisonment of children, gun violence, etc in the US in recent times. Thankfully we aren't jailing all of those protesters.

I saw this on the news over the weekend and was flabbergasted that they weren't allowed to drive up until this point. What the fuck? What else can't women do there that men can do? Honest question.

Let's stop playing "who has the shittier country" Olympics and appreciate the fact that this is one in a series of small steps forward SA has been making recently. Hopefully women's rights activists keep the pressure up so we can see a modern SA with contemporary civil rights laws in my lifetime.

It's not like anybody is really talking about the Saudi caused famine/genocide in Yemen or anything but this is more effective PR to make sure that dead starving kids won't make the headlines.

Women need "Guardians" while men don't. A guardian is basically the closest male relative, and women need their "permission" for pretty much anything.

That law is far worse than even the driving ban, but it doesn't get as much attention because it's harder to explain to people.

Yikes, that's some pretty fucked up shit right there. Well, at least they can check this one thing off the list, but after seeing the post about how women can only park in certain "women's only" spots, I can see how they might still be segregated from other drivers. That would be unfortunate.

Yeah, and instituted after the whole "death of a princess" affair.

On a side note, I read a really interesting Dutch analysis, that this move is actually not to give women more rights, but instead a way to cut costs : a lot of drivers are Asian. By letting the women drive families can get rid of Asian drivers.

Interesting insight

Welcome to the 20th century now please stop starving children in Yemen you psychos

You people live in democratic societies and yet you never blame yourselves for the atrocities your leaders commit, you are blaming people stuck in monarchist theocracies for the atrocities our leaders make. We can't protest or vote, dissent is illegal, we never asked for the war on yemen and we never supported it.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory, there are women that campaigned for this for decades, and have had their lives changed for the better. In fact they will probably see a boost in spending from new car purchases which will easily outweigh possible savings from reduced drivers.

Heaven forbid women make the Saudi Government look bad! Better jail them!

Legalising driving for women is good, but it's like finding a tiny nugget of gold inside a cave of shit in Saudi Arabia. Anyone taking their foot off the pedal now (pun not intended) and declaring the country progressive for women needs to rethink that. Pressure has to be kept on one of the worst places in the world to be a woman.

The most likely reason is that not allowing women to drive was unsustainable, so the only way to maintain the theocracy was to concede this one issue.

There are plenty of shitheels genuinely supporting everything the government ever done, but people need to keep this in mind before they come up with a shitty snarky remark.

Especially if they don't even bother to vote or complain about not-pure-enough progressive candidates.

You are being stupid. If you know anything about Saudi Arabia is that the SAUDI part explains everything. It is a country run by a single tribe that took it by force, from what was an Islamic caliphate. With the help of westerners. So yes, it's your fault pretty much that a tribe that will do anything to stay in power is doing whatever the fuck it wants.
