I went to Arizona for the weekend. And I could probably count the number of Asian people I saw on one hand.

They had some really good Texmex food though. And Sedona was beautiful.

I imagine the Arizona is like the Georgia. You have to know the layout of the land round here to see where the specific communities of asians are.

On the other hand, really croweded cities seem to be really diverse. Went to NYC once and there were tons of Asians around me.

My grandma made some this past weekend and I'm gonna eat one tomorrow. Also TSA thinks they look like explosives when scanned.

So I just came back from the doughnut shop down the street and that cute girl is still working there and so I just asked out of the blue how do you feel about living in North Carolina? She said it's boring which I figured, because it is boring here unless you're in like Charlotte probably. And then I asked about this town specifically we're in and how white folks be acting and she told me about how old white people be interrogating her trying to find out if she's an illegal immigrant or a citizen because she's Asian and I think she mentioned some complimented her on speaking English well. I was like damn, really? And them I told her what I had went through the other night with the police and after Trump got elected. It was nice to talk to someone about things for a little bit.

Just found out I'm not actually half Chinese like I thought I was. Actually about 1/4 Chinese, 1/6th Southeast Asian of some sort, and the rest of that half (1/12th) made up of random unknown Asian and Native American. Weird.

Unless my sister ends up not actually being related to me or something. Then I have no idea.

What is this in reference to?

Either the harvard thread or the new york city schools thread. Those two threads together was a perfect explanation of the hypocrisy / racism that was going on. In the Harvard thread, it was all about "well we just want people to take wealth into account", and in the NY thread, once it was pointed out that Asians are the poorest minority group in NYC, all that shit about "equal playing field" all went out the window.

That said, this should have surprised no one that the anti-asian (and anti-semitic) values that OT had on the old site came over to the new one.

Man I was watching a video about being Asian by an animator on YT which was trending. I thought it was pretty good! (Plz no milkshake duck)

It was a pretty accurate snapshot of my life even though I consider myself more American. I like American food more, I like American music, American movies, just American culture more. I guess it comes with being a first generation child...

It's the little things. Like when other Asians talk about refusing stuff like monetary gifts twice before accepting it and making a show of it. Never wearing shoes inside. Comparing every other Asian child to each other by their parents in some petty competition.

Huh.

Edit: My bad. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHdUFJCkAfQ.
It was YT trending which was how I found it while playing CS:GO and OW lol. Hopefully the dude isn't like other YTers cause I liked the style and video.

Do any of you guys know of any US cities with good Filipino or Japanese communities? My wife (japanese) and I (Filipino) are looking at possible future cities to live in and would prefer to live somewhere where we could both stay in touch with our backgrounds. I realize the quick answer is LA but I'm not super keen on moving to the west coast. I suppose I could be convinced though.

Oh jeez, that's pretty far out there for me, but I'll definitely consider it. I was a midwest farm-country boy growing up. I should also mention that I am a canadian citizen as well so Canadian cities are on the table too, but that would complicate things a bit because I'm not sure I could practice medicine there.

I do, but they're all in California. If you like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, though, West Covina has a lot of Filipino stuff.

Orange County. There's a good number of Filipino and Japanese people in these cities. Namely, Placentia, Orange, Brea, Costa Mesa.

Yeah, I remember being quite surprised to see how the goal posts kept getting moved for Asian students. Once it became clear that they often had quite high scores to squelch any possibility of saying, "You're not smart enough to get in here," it changed to, "You study too much and don't have enough extra-curricular activities to prove you're well-rounded like white kids." Then when the parents started putting their kids into every club, music/dance class, hobby class possible to show that they had twice as many extra-curricular activities to show they were twice as well-rounded, it changed to, "Well, sure you're smart, and sure you do a LOT outside class, but your... personality... you're just not personable enough, like white kids, so that's why you're being refused."

I think this probably means that Asian parents are now putting their kids through every "sociability class" imaginable to make sure they're twice as charismatic and easy to get along with as white kids, and then it'll change to, "I'm sorry, you're just not FLAWED enough. Noting against your skin color, but we really need humans, that can make mistakes, you're too intimidating to others right now with your super smarts, super extra-curricular activities and super personality. It's just too much."

You tell em!

edit: Another affirmative action thread. I saw it while reading NYT today and knew it'd pop up on ERA.

Mostly ignoring the thread now. Don't really care enough to argue. I disagree with the administration on this. I'd rather flawed affirmative action than none at all, because I'm confident that the universities will only get whiter.

San Fran has a sizable Fillipino and Japanese community. Really, all along the Bay does. Downside -- it's hella expensive here though. San Mateo has a Japanese section of their library, for example, which is unusual for a smaller city.

Dang, almost missed you nixing LA. Hawaii is a pretty good choice since they have sizable populations of Japanese and Filipino ancestry. Can't beat paradise!

Dead horse and all (also no point in it being posted in OT - it'd be dead within a day or the usual crowd will show up to downplay it) but that NYC chancellor is doubling down. What a fucker.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/04/nyregion/asians-overlooked-specialized-schools.html
"If you choose to be offended as an Asian resident of New York City, that's a choice you make," he said. "If you choose to not be offended, that's a choice you make. But the statement is true: No one owns it. The City of New York, taxpayers, own the public school system of New York City."

Supporting a political party is always so vexing as a Asian American.

One party straight out says racist ass shit to you but has some policies that are somewhat helpful to you.

One party throws constant jabs of diet racism at you and has policies that show how much they really hate you.

Moved out east and bemoaning the lack of good Asian food. Vietnamese isn't bad but Chinese and Japanese food are so scarce. :(
