anyone have a wireless, portable battery charger? Would like something compact to carry with me in case I need to top up my iphone X, and with wireless it'd be convenient with no cables etc. Amazon don't seem to have anything except brands I've never heard of - presumably generic Chinese chargers.
I have the Wofalodata Qi battery pack. I don't know if I'd call it compact; you won't really feel it in a bag but it's too big for me to daily carry. It is convenient for topping up, and keeping your phone charged while using wired headphones on a plane.

RAVPower make a Qi battery now, and they're a bit more reputable.

Heads up if anyone cares. One of my favorite iPhone accessories is on indiegogo. It's just an incredible small lightning cable you keep on you st all times. I have one of their older ones but they launched a new campaign for one that adds usb-c to it. Take a look if you want. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/incharge-universal-one-cable-to-rule-them-all-iphone#/

Ah I thought the computer end was USB-C. That's a great idea but now I need one that'll fit a new MBP.

I like hearing the outside noise when exercising or biking outside.

I think it's just different use cases. I'm never running around outside with earphones of any sort (you're asking to be killed in NY) but when I'm listening I want to cut everything out. My Bose noise-cancelling earbuds were damn expensive but they absolutely kill outside noise and I can listen to my music at reasonable volumes when I'm on the bus or to block out noisy neighbors at night.

That's pretty rad, I backed the all-in-one model.

Had no idea anyone had made a Lightning+MicroUSB plug.

Any suggestions on how to reformat PDFs saved from safari reading mode without much ado? These one page, super long PDFs, while a joy to read, are annoying to handle.

Yeah that's about where I am too, I upgraded to 2TB a while ago. Actually checking now, I'm 193GB/2TB. Damn it! Must have deleted something. Good thing I have a GoPro coming up.

The price isn't so bad anymore but I wish I could use iCloud as an external drive to offload files without syncing them to my local storage.

I have been more than happy to pay the $3 so far, and I will swallow the $10 as well, it is just a hassle free affair, and having peace of mind about my photo library is fantastic. :)
If I go to 2TB will will probably start using it more for my files too rather than rely on Dropbox for that.

So my iPod Touch battery is swelling which means if I go to Apple, they'll just swap out the device...

There's no way to save games that have been deleted from the app store right - particular the games with DLC? Those are just gone forever? I wish I could just pay more for a battery swap...

Probably need something like iMazing to backup the app.

Are they literally off the store like gone from your App Store Downloads page, or just not available for purchase?

Hey, Apple updated Remote to be X compatible.
I guess they had to since it simply crashed on 12. Wouldn't even open for me.

Do any of those thing still work? I remember they broke alot of the file viewers with iOS9.
Works with iOS 11 as I purchased it a few months ago.
I mainly used it to get some old 32-bit games that were delisted from my old PC onto an iPad with iOS 8 on it.

I tried the demo and it wouldn't back up the games that didn't have File Sharing enabled unless I need to buy it for it to work?

Like it can get the IPAs, but seemingly not the App Data, but I'll try it again.
(The app itself is like 50 megs... with 3 gigs of game data associated with it that is unrecoverable because the servers are gone).

In my experience you can only get at the App Data parts of apps via jailbreaks if you're running iOS 9 or above as its encrypted at that point and inaccessible to 3rd party tools.

iTunes backups should contain the app data though so maybe that's an option if you have the .ipa file locally (e.g. backup, swap iPod, restore backup to new device).
iTunes 12.6.4 for Enterprise still has the App Store and app management parts, and supports up to iOS 11.4 currently.

I think they backup things like settings, but not stuff like DLC. I remember restoring a backup and it had my apps back on the device, but none of the data.

It's terrible because Japanese games are designed to download like 2 extra gigs of data in additon to the ipa (I have no idea if they still do that) so when the game shuts down, that stuff is just gone forever.

Yeah, looks like iMazing doesn't work for these apps... so I guess I have to take my chance with a third party battery swap or lose everything and go with an Apple refurb swap.

So I heard about this first European homekit lock and I jumped right in, and it's quite cool to lock and unlock the front door with Siri. Not as pricey as I expected either.

However, it was to some disappointment that I found that the homekit version is *only* homekit compatible, as that ruins giving access to other people. Although, giving access to other people would always imply having them download an app and create an account, which is cumbersome in any case. Hopefully when they release a number pad for pin code access it will solve all this.

It's fascinating though. Can go for a run with just an Apple Watch and AirPods on my ears, listen to music wirelessly, pay for groceries with Apple Pay, make and receive calls, come back home and unlock the door. We're quickly approaching year 3000.

Now if only there were simple aftermarket solutions for car keyfobs too.

Ah, shame.
Yeah, with the whole "extra data" issue.. it complicates it. Wish there was a solid way to preserve it.
Wait so even wired backups to iTunes don't back up your applications?
At most it backs up the IPA file and any "settings" plist files that might be available. But otherwise, game data (what I would consider DLC) is not backed up (it's stupid, I don't know why they don't do it... but it's been that way since iOS7).

---

Also, is it true that if I get the battery swapped by a third party repair service, Apple will refuse to look at the device for any other issue?

Right now I guess it's the choice between paying for a battery swap and losing Apple support forever or losing my data... I really wish I could pay Apple to swap the battery, but they don't want my money. :(

Generally speaking, yes. They'll always help with software issues and the like but third party batteries are a class where if they open the phone to do something else and see that, they'll likely just close it up and deny service.

I can but then they get full access to all other homekit stuff right? Like they live at my place too. I guess it's not a huge deal and I can just remove them later. Btw this makes me think there should be a "guest" functionality in homekit. With limited access and limited time options.

But the worst part is that I can't give access to Android users at all. That disapointed me because the previous versions of this lock (Danalock) were multiplatform and I thought this Homekit version just built on top of it. But it won't be a problem if/when I can get a pin pad for it.

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a dilemma
I'm really considering buying a Macbook Pro, I'm not the biggest Apple fan around having always used Windows but now due to my work I use Mac workstations and I'm kind of getting used to them.
So even if I find them kind of overpriced for the inside hardware, the build quality and "no hassle" philosophy is kind of appealing to me - I need a small computer I can easily take with me that'll have a lot of battery life and can be used throughout the day. My usage of it would be mainly browsing Internet, videos, typing notes and using productivity software (spreadsheets, text, etc).

So I'm hesitating between the 12" MacBook (being smaller and lighter) and the 13" MacBook Pro (having a better screen and keyboard and two thunderbolt ports), the two of them being the first price available on the site.

I have some questions for these models :
1°) How's Microsoft Office for Mac compared to the Windows version ? Is it lacking options ? Are there alternatives ?
2°) Does Dropbox work well enough with syncing files between two different OS ?
3°) How's Windows running on them ? (I might do some really light gaming / indie gaming). What about battery life ?

Thanks !

Does the app for the lock have guests? I know the Home app doesn't but my roommate's girlfriend is considered a "guest" in the app for just the lock itself, August

I don't have a modern MBP (people say the 2015 models are the last best one?), but Office is pretty much the same (once you get into 365, then they are literally the same).
Dropbox works as you'd expect.
And Windows through dualboot works as you'd expect it to on an equivalent machine. With virtual machines, YMMV.

The app theoretically supports guests but not for the Homekit version of the lock (Danalock V3). The support guy specifically told me that the homekit version is just for homekit, it doesn't even talk to their servers, just Apple's. I'm not such a technical guy but knowing that the lock uses bluetooth it's hard to comprehend the excuse, but then again it's not the first homekit bluetooth device that works with homekit only, like the ElGato Eve stuff, so there might be technical reasons.

Luckily, it allows for full manual operation, including our regular keys.

1 & 2 are non issues, I use both on my mac and work PC and they work flawlessly.
The obvious alternatives would be iWorks and iCloud, which I also love and use, obviously with less platform utility and iWorks really is not nearly as powerfull and feature rich as office, for everyday word and excel use iWorks is fine though.

3 I have no experience with, but from what I have heard it is not really a problem these days either.

Between your two options I would unquestionably go with the pro!

That's so bizarre... I didn't expect stuff to come out that was JUST HomeKit.

I know we've established that inviting people into your home isn't an awesome solution, but you can invite them and then turn off remote access and editing privileges.

Well I really wanted to give temporary access to a few Android users from close family sometimes. Anyway, the situation with this lock is that they have a keypad coming out in early August, so there's not long left to wait. That's the ideal situation to me because it doesn't force any guest to download an app or create an account, and allows me to forget the devices by accident and not get locked out (if auto-lock is on) or worry about a dead battery.

Unless the keypad is for some bizarre reason not compatible with the Homekit version, in which case I'll return the whole thing ASAP and wait for other players to come to europe (Schlage or August). I'm investigating it.

HomeKit requires encrypted communication and at least used to require special hardware chips for that purpose, but I think they dropped that hardware requirement due to low adoption, so I'm not sure why a manufacturer would not be able to support both.

So I have no experience with this lock, but according to their website you can grant anyone guest access. It says that their specific iOS app (or Android) is how you do it. Sounds like they way it's supposed to work is that you can make someone a guest key, send it to them, and it will prompt them to download the Danalock app either on Android or iOS. The description of the app on the App Store even mentions being able to communicate with the V3 lock.

But then if you go to the Danalock store the sell a version listed as a HomeKit model. They've made it all very confusing.

They seem like a small team. Even the app is relatively low rent looking (Java??). Mind you, you can communicate with the lock via the app (which btw it is universal for all the different V3 versions, from Homekit to zigbee etc) but in the Homekit version it just taps into Homekit communication, which is a layer of abstraction on top of regular bluetooth (or other) - and that's why you can't share access. But yeah it is confusing, I had no idea about not being able to create guest users etc when I bought it, so when it was not working out for me I sent an email to the support team and got the confirmation. I still powered through because of the upcoming keypad but as it stands I got crushing news about it this morning...

kGLcY00l.jpg

Welp, time to return it :(

Pretty sad because the lock itself is well made and works well and it is nice looking. But the Homekit version is simply underwhelming in functionality. And I don't want a smartlock without Homekit support either, so it's back to square one.

Any reason you can't organize a way to get one of the few available here in the states? I know it's a hassle but I'd be willing to help with that

Thanks for the offer, I actually have been looking forever for one of those locks to come over to Europe and even pondered importing from Amazon - they do ship them, but then with the extra customs and potential support issues I've decided to wait. I feel like more options should pop up real soon. August Home was even bought off last year by Swedish lock maker Assa Abloy (who make the regular lock on my door), so I feel like August going global is eminent. Really appreciate it, but for now I'll sit on it. Back to keys!
