As someone retired not by choice, this hits me hard.

This doesn't happen to me at all. It never happened to me when I was on summer break and it doesn't happen to me when I take vacation now. This comic depicts a sad state of existence that I want no part of.

Agreed. Work has never felt fulfilling for me.
The point is not that work is fulfilling. Fun is "fun" because it is not work and because work limits how much "fun" you can have. But "fun" is less meaningful if you weren't constrained in the first place.

If you didn't have school or you didn't have work, you would find summer break and vacation less fun.

Agreed with you both.

Nah. As someone who went on a several-years-long sabbatical, I was fine and I actually miss those days.

If you miss those days, you found the fun in those days meaningful because your current work is less fun than those days. You wouldn't be missing it if you continued your sabbatical, right?

What? I enjoyed those days because I wasn't working.

I wouldn't be "missing" those days but that's because I'd be living those days....

The point of the comic is that you enjoy breaks because it is freedom from work. But if you never have the experience of work/school that puts those constraints on you, you would not enjoy it as much.

Before you set foot in a school, weekends and breaks are meaningless to you--they are just another day. After you start going to school, you enjoy the weekend and breaks more because it is a break from schooling.

From my perspective, it's not just about working at a job specifically. It's about doing things that take effort and give you a sense of accomplishment. If you take a long break filled with nothing but loafing around the house sleeping, watching TV and such, it's going to start feeling hollow and boring. If you have some actual things to do besides eating and shitting to keep you busy, like maybe home renovations, cooking three meals a day for a family, learning a language, etc. you're going to feel a lot better. Isn't this a basic human needs thing? I'd be pretty surprised if you said you did basically nothing productive/stimulating for years and felt great. I mean, I'm sure it could feel great in comparison to working a job that's like torture for you, but...

Anyway, funny comic. Nancy seems like the kind of character who WOULD just lounge around the house as soon as school is over, so that reaction is predictable.

Your Mom
you don't have to work for most of the week to enjoy the time off work. Some people could certainly be wired that way but - other people do the stuff they enjoy all week

I can't believe I missed this thread when it started.

I grew up loving Garfield, The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes. I used to read the comics in the paper every day and made a ritual of reading the full color Sunday comics, but at some point I stopped getting the Sunday paper and drifted away from the daily comics.

This new Nancy is up there with the greats.

It's a funny comic and I'm sure some people agree with it but not everyone. Trying to argue with someone about why they enjoyed a period of their life is weird because you're just not going to win that argument. It's like trying to argue that someone actually likes the taste of a specific food when they're telling you they don't.

i know a lot of people who are like that so i understand this comic, still funny!

But that doesn't apply at all to me, i have tons of things to do and enjoy it more while i'm on loooong breaks! the shorter the break is, the less fun i have cause i feel like i'm in a hurry to do what i like before the break is over

i hate working, lol
I'm with you there. So never want my time off to end
